Greg Bird off the DL today after about four weeks with a right shoulder issue, he's had a very disappointing year so far.

Severino with his second start in AAA tonight, he gave up a walk and two singles to the first three batters of the game, but was close to perfect after that: 7 4 1 1 1 1

Also, to answer a bit more on Jagielo above, he's evidently not a very good defender at 3B so they are starting to try him at 1B some.

Also Jorge Mateo is 17 for 43 in his last 10 games (.395), he evidently hired Scott Boras recently.

Severino with his first AAA victory last night. Tossed five shutout innings in Buffalo before tiring in sixth and giving up two runs. Threw 95 pitches, topped out at 97, 4 Ks, two of them on breaking balls in the low 80s, according to a Buffalo News account of the game. Still a work in progress, according to Scranton pitching coach. Probably six weeks away from helping this team as either a starter or reliever.

Severino logged 113 innings in 2014 and is at 54 so far this season in AA and AAA combined. Yanks have been saving his bullets all season, limiting him to four or five innings. He has around 90 innings left in his 2015 arsenal.

Three more SBs in the first two innings for Mateo tonight, including one of home. He's up to 46 now.

And Judge homered again his first AB tonight, his 12th of the year.

It doesn't look like they're especially trying to conserve Severino's innings, he was dominant into the 8th today: 7.2 4 2 0 0 7

In the most over the top opinion about any Yankee prospect I've seen in a while, check out this opinion from a scout about Mateo, who I thought was a super-fast slap-hitting SS who has been struggling to hit well in low A:

"Another said, “He has a chance to be a star. He reminds me of [Edgar] Renteria at the similar age. He can run. If you watch batting practice you will see he has more than speed. The ball jumps off his bat for a young kid. You can say he is [an Alfonso] Soriano comp or a baby Hanley Ramirez. He has a chance to be special.”"

I've also heard comparisons to Jose Reyes.  Matao has tools but you would like to see him walk a little more and strikeout a little less.  He definitely hasn't developed an advanced approach at the plate at this point of his career.  With that said, he is 20 years old and this is his first exposure to Single A.  He is a high-ceiling prospect.

I will admit I bought into the hype even before this season, and he was a very high pick by me in the 2 longterm keeper leagues I am in.   He may well bust as most young players do,  but there does seem to be some significant 5 tool potential especially for a MI

Severino's next start will be at the MLB level, Cashman said this afternoon, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com

If any Yankee fans would be interested in writing a piece for .com about Severino, we would be very happy to have it. A breakdown of his stuff, why he deserves to be called up now, his minor league history, and anything about his signing would be cool. Feel free to PM me or abs if interested.

Examples of call-up articles we've done:

Well, that's exciting news, his last AAA start was Wednesday, so he could slot in Monday or any time after that.

DS, I don't know anywhere near enough about him to do something like that, but I'm psyched to see him in pinstripes.

Wow, Cashman says no innings limit on Severino. Not sure I believe that, but interesting.

Never seen him pitch, Wingack, and I'm not good enough with modern stats to do the kind of analysis SOSH requires. But I would pay good money to watch the kid pitch. Hope he lives up to the stats he compiled this season at both levels. This is the final leap. I think his stuff will play nicely for five or six innings but the Yankees have pretty much limited him to five innings on most nights in 2015, obviously with his season innings limit in mind. He is at 99.1 innings so far. Pitched 113 innings in 2014. By the Verducci rule, he should go no more than 143. If he averages five innings per start for the Yankees, that would give him nine starts over the final two months of the season.

As per LoHud Yankees: One day after announcing that Luis Severino’s next start will be in the big leagues, the Yankees have given an exact date for that highly anticipated debut. Severino will pitch on Wednesday, the second game of next week’s series against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

The .com doesn't require heavy stats acumen. Plenty of our articles are pretty stats light and some are even stats free. Having seen him pitch would be helpful but is also not necessary. I wrote up a piece on Sam Travis without ever having watched a game of his using publicly available video and triple slash lines. If you have a take on Severino, join our slack page and put it out there and we would be happy to help you develop it.

Somebody named Capuano just threw four innings of one-run ball for Scranton today. He might be harder to kill than the bad guy in a horror movie.

He might be the 6th starter again at this point, either him or Mitchell.

Yeah, that was a tough job, mopping up for a month and then getting the occasional spot start. He is better off in Scranton, pitching every five days, and then going up when needed. I guess he took a pay cut. Not sure.

Nah, he gets his money either way. He is off the 40 man roster, they'd have to re-add him if they wanted to bring him back up.

With NY's AAA rotation in mild chaos (Severino and Mitchell promoted, Esmil Rogers went to Korea, Capuano is back), two of NY's best performing SP prospects got promoted today, Brady Lail to AAA and the awesomely named Rookie Davis to AA to take Lail's place.

Both are young, Lail doesn't turn 22 until next week and Davis is also 22.

Gary Sanchez has been on fire since moving to AAA a few weeks ago, another HR tonight and a 1.056 OPS now in 58 PAs. He is going to be back on top 100 offseason lists if he keeps this up, still only 22.

I wrote about Severino today for .com.

http://sonsofsamhorn.com/baseball/teams/al-east/new-york-yankees/new-york-yankees-call-up-of-luis-severino/

With Severino knocking on the door to the big leagues, the Yankees didn’t have to panic at the trade deadline when Michael Pineda needed a DL-stint because of his strained forearm. General Manager Brian Cashman’s ace in the hole was his 21-year-old stud. Even though Severino has already thrown 99 ⅓ innings and only 113 last year, he will not be on an innings limit.

Greg Bird with a triple and homer in his first two ABs tonight vs. Josh Tomlin, former Cleveland hurler. Now hitting .295 with 5 HRs in 105 trips. OPS around .830. He might be more ready to help Yankees in September than Judge or Refsnyder.

Bird has to be added to the 40 man this winter, Judge doesn't, so Bird is more likely to be activated in Sept than Judge, I think (barring injuries, of course).

Good point. If Teix wasn't playing so well, my Bird interest would be higher.

Totally blocked by Teixeira and A-Rod. Left handed hitter, perfect for the park. Guess he better buy a house in Scranton. Hate to see him go in a trade but his stock is rising.

Jorge Mateo with quite the debut in high A: his fourth hit of the game came in the top of the 12th, he stole second and scored the go-ahead run. Tampa blew it in the bottom of the inning, but still 4-6 is a nice way to start off at a new level.

NY's AAA lineup is absolutely loaded at this point, last night they started:

Ben Gamel (LF) (he's been getting a lot of buzz as a potential 4th OF, one of the reasons they didn't mind moving Flores)
Jose Pirela (3B ) (.871 OPS)
Greg Bird (1B ) (.893 OPS)
Gary Sanchez (C ) (1.010 OPS in 62 PAs since being promoted, including some mammoth HRs)
Aaron Judge (RF) (NY's #1 prospect with Severino up)
Slade Heathcott (CF) (looked promising in limited time in NY before getting hurt)
Rob Refsnyder (2B ) (we all know his deal)
Cole Figueroa (SS) (also up briefly earlier this year)
Austin Romine (DH)

All nine of those guys could end up with multi-year careers in the bigs, that has got to be really rare for a AAA lineup.

Judge 0-for-5 with 3 Ks last night. First real crisis of his pro career. This is when your AAA hitting coach and manager earn their money.

Jorge Mateo maybe deserves his own thread at this point, the promotion to high A seems to have woken up his bat. Through 6 games (tonight not quite done yet), he is hitting .464 with a 1.214 OPS, 4 SBs.

Judge had a big 3 run HR also, hopefully that will snap him out of his slump.
