Maybe he understands that his closer is paid to prevent runs rather than drive them in, and preferred a guy with relief experience in the eighth to rolling the dice again with a guy whose last relief appearance before tonight was in A ball.

Alright, well don't act like that is anything to be "understood."

It's a dice roll either way obviously, they said Familia had never had a 6-out save although he had some 4- and 5- out saves before. There's no handbook for managing a game 5/7 but essentially forfeiting an at-bat in the 9th a 1-run game is at best a massive, massive risk to take on just to stick with one guy who has already gotten as many outs as he usually does.

Couldn't tell but the booth speculated that Don couldn't understand why Ethier couldn't get the runner over to third in his AB. Real ugly scene, big TV audience, cannot help Mattingly's chances of returning.
