Gaborik's got the same term, and with the $1.3125m retained, ends up costing $937k more AAV than keeping Phaneuf. However, Gaborik's front-loaded deal saves the Sens ~$4m.

Maybe the Sens can retain some $$ and flip Gaborik, but... yeah it's pretty bleak for them
They can save another $3.6 million in real cash if they buy Gaborik out after the season. I’m guessing that is the route they take.

Interesting tidbit in Lebrun's article today

It wouldn’t surprise me if GM Don Sweeney adds both a piece up front and on the back end. He tried on Vatanen earlier this season before Anaheim shipped him to New Jersey and my understanding is that his desire to add some help on the blueline persists.
Anaheim was only going to trade Vatanen for an NHL center so I'm not sure what the Bruins could have been offering. Spooner was hurt at the time, IIRC, and Krejci/Backes have NMCs.

Spooner returned from injury on 11/22 and played 5 games before hitting the shelf again. Vatanen was dealt to NJ on 11/30, so it is plausible that Spooner was offered.

I wonder if they’ll kick the tires on Gionta for bottom 6 depth. Even if he’s a healthy scratch, there’s no acquisition cost and he could be a good veteran to add.
LeBrun speculated on this in the Athletic today. Gionta’s agent apparently is talking to 3-4 teams and there is a front runner. LeBrun said he doesn’t know the teams, but speculated that it is likely an East contender since he’d be looking for a playoff team relatively close to home (Rochester, NY). So I guess the Bruins fit the bill on that front.

Edit: Gionta had a better year last season than I remembered. 15-20=35 playing on the bottom 6 of a pretty lousy team.

Per Oilers reporter Jim Matheson's twitter, the Rangers want DeBrusk in any deal for McDonagh:

"I'm hearing NYR would want Bruins' rookie Jake DeBrusk included in any deal for Ryan McDonagh. Ironic, since former Oiler GM Sather traded for Jake's dad Louie when he sent Mark Messier to NYR in 1991."

I wasn't comfortable with a lot of the McDonagh proposals I've seen posted here and elsewhere, but that one's a laugh out loud "no".

There’s a common ground to be found. I wouldn’t do DeBrusk, but I’d give up a healthy package for him.

I’d probably do something like:

Carlo or Grzelcyk
One of Bjork/Donato/Frederic/JFK
1st round pick
3rd round pick

I’d try and space the picks out so they aren’t the same year. Not sure if that’s enough for the Rangers, but it is a young roster defenseman, a top prospect, and 2 high picks. McAvoy, Heinen and DeBrusk would be off limits. I’d consider pretty much any combo of non-roster prospects though.

I feel like there is a big difference between Carlo and grzelyck though so if they picked Carlo it should lower the rest of the asking price.

I agree. if Carlo is in the deal he should be the biggest asset going. 19 year old defenseman that can play in this league don't grow on trees.

Carlo’s 21. I like him, but I think he is over valued and wouldn’t let him get in the way of a deal. He’s a 4/5 defensive defenseman. Those are fairly easy to find, I think he’s like a taller Kevan Miller.

Everyone wants to trade the 1st rounder? I’d be more interested in offering 3 prospects and keeping the 1st round pick. It seems like there are a lot of NHL ready guys for next year.

On D, this thread has pointed out how their LD depth is much deeper than RD. That makes a Carlo trade tough. It also means Gryz almost has to be leaving in a McD trade. Or Krug I guess.

How do you see the D pairs without Carlo? Just think the right side is so much better with Carlo even if he’s mediocre.

Chara - McAvoy
McD - Miller
Krug - Mcquaid
Gryz

Vs

Chara - McAvoy
McD - Carlo
Krug - Miller
Mcquaid

To me, the second group is much stronger and worth it for the Bs. Guess it depends on the difference

Not sure, but McDonagh has played a lot on the right side so they would have options. I’d probably go either Chara - McDonagh or Krug - McDonagh. Anyway you slice it, McDonagh is an upgrade on Grzelcyk and Carlo as much as I like those 2.

Debrusk is an untouchable now? I seem to recall people being down on him and way high on JFK and Bjork.

I like Debrusk but McD is an almost elite defenseman that is on a decent contract for another year and could help take the place of Chara and could put you over the top for a serious shot at the Cup.

This. I’d love to keep DeBrusk but if he’s the centerpiece for a guy like McDonagh given where this team is right now, you explore that path 100%.

I don't see the market materializing the way the Rangers would want for this player. Not unless a team we haven't heard of emerges. The cost controlled players that would be more appealing than what the Bruins could offer are too good (Point) or too low ceiling (Dotchin) and their prospects are good but not super exciting. Raddysh, Howden, Katchouk, Hajek, foote all feel like middle six or bottom 4 players at their ceilings and Tampa will have a lot of trouble signing McD long term with Kucherov and Vasilevsky coming up and the rest of their defense needing to be resigned/replaced. I just don't see them offering a player with Debrusk or Carlos perceived value.

My best offer is Gryz, Bjork, one of the lhd(Lauzon, Urho, Zboril or Lindgren) and a 1st. I can't see anyone offering more and it honestly feels like an overpay but I'm trying to not be a homer.

Yeah if anything it would be roughly equivalent to the Wheeler for Peverley trade. Give up a young, inconsistent (not a knock, just a feature of being young) guy for a stable, established guy that will definitely help come Stanley Cup time.

I don’t think think Wheeler is a great comp. He was in the final year of his ELC and needed a new contract after the season. He was likely going to be a cap casualty anyways, and also was playing on the 3rd line, and they got Peverley back to replace him. DeBrusk still has 2 more ELC years. If they move DeBrusk they would need to find a winger back to replace him.

Wheeler was 24 and in his 3rd season in the NHL.

DeBrusk is 21 and in his 1st year. They're really not that comparable.

This is representative of what I'd give up too, though I'm not sure I'd give up Urho. I could be talked into Carlo though he would have to be the center of the package. If it isn't enough for the Rangers, then it isn't enough. This Bruins team is young enough that I don't think they need to chase a cup this year, though obviously one advantage of getting McDonagh is having him under team control for next year.

Donato and Debrusk are untouchable along with obvious roster players like McAvoy and Heinen. I'd be hard pressed to give up JFK because I think he replaces Spooner next year.

One intriguing prospect is if it wasn't just McDonagh but Grabner or Nash as well. I'd think it would have to be to even consider DeBrusk practically, though I still don't think that package would be enough.

At this point McAvoy is a given as untouchable unless there’s a legit superstar coming back.

Even a young star like Gadreau wouldn’t be enough for him given the makeup of the Bruins D.

Yeah because at 21 he's clearly done progressing.
He’s played 137 NHL games and has shown no offense, and didn’t really have much offense at lower levels. I just don’t think that part of his game is going to magically appear.

Again, I like him. He plays tough defensive minutes, takes on top matchups when paired with Chara, and can eat a ton on minutes PK. He’s a useful player and I’m happy to have him. I just think his offense limits his ceiling. Defensive defenseman are easier to find. If the Rangers insisted on his inclusion to complete a deal for McDonagh, I would do it. That’s all.

What is the high bar for Debrusk? I am shocked people feel he is untouchable. McAvoy is a stone cold stud and therefore untouchable.

Debrusk might end up with 20 goals this year... Do people see him as a future 30 goal scorer?

Each passing year will bring Bergeron, Chara, Krejci and Task away from their peak. I think McD is the type of player they need now. Too much can happen is hockey on the injury side... there is youth and some skill in the pipeline.

I don’t disagree about McD. The question is what you give up for him.

DeBrusk has great hands, he wins pucks, and he plays a straight-line game. If he continues to develop, he could be a Joe Pavelski-quality player. That’s his ceiling. He’s certainly going to be a top 6 forward for a long time. Why do you think the Rangers want him?

Word out of Ottawa is they’re taking pitches from teams about Karlsson this week, and part of the ask is taking Bobby Ryan back in a deal.

If that’s truly the case, I think it is very dumb for Ottawa or they really have no interest in moving Karlsson and are just humoring the interested teams. Ryan has a $7.25 cap hit for 4 more years, and is owed close to $32 million in cash dollars. I’m sure they’d love to free themselves from that disaster, but I can’t see how attaching it to Karlsson makes sense. Karlsson’s like a top 5-10 player in the league and would net them a monster return. Attaching Ryan to Karlsson would limit the return, and even if they did insist on it I’m not sure there is a team out there that can even do it in-season. I get they want to cut costs, but I don’t know how you sell trading your franchise player to facilitate a cap dump to the fan base.

That doesn't sound like a report rooted in reality for all the reasons you just mentioned. If Ottawa is moving Karlsson, they are doing it to hasten a rebuild. They'd be lucky to get 1 or 2 valuable pieces attaching that albatross to him considering how few teams can add $13 mil in cap hit with temp at the deadline.

All along the Gionta lines, Jarome Iginla popped up at Providence’s practice today. He moved to the area on the off-season, so this likely just some sort of ATO as he sees what he has left and maybe eyes a return for next season. He is coming off hip surgery. I guess a plausible add, but he would have to sign a contract with the Bruins before 2/26 to be eligible for the playoffs, so that seems rather quick. Here it is tho. Good to have him around some of the kids though.

Bruins mentions in Friedman’s 31 Thoughts today...

- Holden deal doesn’t close the door on McDonagh. Question is if the Bruins want to “take the plunge.” West team poking around McDonagh too.

- B’s and Calgary have sniffed around Patrick Sharp in the past, could with revisit at the deadline?

The Karlsson thing fascinates me. No idea if this can be pulled off in the next 5 days, but certainly seems like Karlsson’s days in Ottawa are over sometime in the next ~18 months one way or the other. Tampa is apparently making an “aggressive” push. They have the ammo to do it, but it gets complicated if Ottawa insists on attaching Ryan to Karlsson. I can’t remember the last time a player of his caliber was on the trade market.

Who would everyone from the Rangers the most when factoring in cost and need? Nash, Grabner, or McDonagh?
