Yeah, the tiebreaker is ROW which Toronto has a 43-41 advantage. If the B’s end up catching them in ROW, it’ll be moot as a tiebreaker anyways.
Unless Toronto runs off like 6 shootout wins to the Bruins 3 ROW. But it’s unlikely.

You are right. I skipped over ROW and went and looked up head-to-head. Apologies.

My offsides opinions are not popular, but how do y'all feel about a 3-1-0 (W-T-L) system for points in the NHL? With or without the 3v3 OT, just get rid of the shootout.

Well, it didn't finish as exciting as it began, but my wife is a Knights fan so she went home happy, and I got to see Jumbo Joe score a goal, throw his body around and get in a few tussles, so all in all a good night. Not that there are any bad nights at the rink.

I also realized this week that I will be home for my sister's wedding the week that playoffs start, so maybe I will get to make my first game at the Garden a playoff game somehow.

It’s not as drastic as Bruins/Leafs, but the Pacific has similar playoff format issues. Good chance that Calgary and San Jose finish with the 2 best records in the West. Winner gets the 2nd wild card (Arizona or Minny are the most likely candidates at this point, and neither may crack 90 points), loser gets Vegas who would be the 3 or 4 seed under the old format. Vegas got off to a slow start but has been on a 108 point pace since 12/1.

Also, Tampa wrapped up the President’s Trophy last night. Wild.

Yeah, the Mark Stone pickup really turned the Knights into a much better team, and I don't envy whichever team gets them in the first round. He looked great last night with them, probably the best player on the ice.

Nashville doesn't seem to generate a ton of offense, but man are they good at making sure the puck gets out of their defensive zone. I have to imagine they are a frustrating team to play against.

Coorado beats Minnestoa 3-1, 4 teams within 4 points of the second wild card in the west. Should be a pretty fun race.

Chicago also has a home and home with Colorado this weekend, then a trip to Arizona. Crazy that they are still in it, but here they are.

In the East it is essentially down to Columbus and Montreal. A Habs win and CBJ regulation loss moved the Habs to 1 point back, though CBJ has a comfortable ROW lead. They play each other next week. Remainin schedules:

MTL: NYI, BUF, @CAR, FLA, @CBJ, @WPG, TB, @WSH, TOR

CBJ: @EDM, @VAN, NYI, MTL, @NSH, @ BUF, BOS, @NYR, @OTT

Habs won 4-0 tonight. CBJ is 0-0 in the 2nd agains EDM. CBJ needs a point to stay in a playoff spot.

Out west Arizona lost 4-2 in Florida. Chicago is currently tied 1-1 in the 2nd against Philly.

Bolts now 58-13-4 120 points in 75 games. Got a shot at most point ever in a season if they run the table or go 6-0-1. I think Bruins are only team in east that will give them trouble. If they get past them, there is no one out west that matches up to them.

Habs blow a late lead to the Hurricanes and end up with the OTL. Four up on Columbus who has two games in hand, one that just started.

edit: CBJ gains closes the gap to two points with a game in hand, and the ROW tiebreaker.

Big night in the East.

CAR @ WSH
NYI @ CBJ
FLA @ MTL

Habs sit in the final playoff spot, 2 points ahead of CBJ but CBJ has a game in hand and the tie breakers. Canes are 5 clear of CBJ.

I just wanted to stop by and say that Nathan MacKinnon is really good at hockey, and I enjoy watching him play the sport.

Carolina also lost. So we’re at:

WC1: Carolina 91 points
WC2: Columbus 90 points

Womp, womp: Montreal 90 points

Carolina and Columbus both have a game in hand on Montreal, and Montreal trails both in ROW.

Carolina- PHI, @PIT (back to back), @TOR, NJD, @PHI

CBJ: @NSH, @BUF (back to back), BOS, @NYR, @OTT (back to back)

MTL: @WPG, TBL, @WSH, TOR

MTL basically has to win out against 4 top 7ish teams. Don’t see that happening. CBJ has 4 of 5 on the road and 2 back to backs, but probably the easiest competition.

He signed the extension. Him and Eichel should’ve went year to year and forced there way out of markets that they’ll never win in.

I just don’t think that is practical. These guys have very little bargaining power. An offer sheet is unrealistic because Edmonton/Buffalo insta-match. Year-to-year isn’t great for players of that caliber because of the injury risk, we kinda went through that with Tavares. Best they could do was sign right up until gaining UFA rights but there was virtually no precedent of that at the time. Stars usually all signed for the max term coming out of ELC. The Matthews contract that was just signed has changed the landscape for a bit for these 2nd contracts.

Also, in McDavid’s defense, he was offered $100 million after his 2nd year in the league in which the team made it to game 7 of the 2nd round. The perception of the organization was completely different at the time he signed. Nobody was turning that offer down.

You’re right, they’re not missing out on UFA by signing those deals. I thought they were locked up into their 30’s. Eichel is going to hit UFA at 28 and McDavid at 29. I forgot how young they were. They could both sign monster deals with another team if their current organizations can’t get their shit together.

Andrew Shaw Cooke'd McQuaid

Rest of the regular season, right?
2 minutes on the ice with a ref staring at the play is asinine. Should've been a major... Shaw would argue his elbows coming up to his own head level was just him bracing for contact.

IMO he would likely get 2-3 games if it were called a major on the ice, since it wasn't I'd be surprised if DoPS reviews it.

If he were really “bracing himself”, wouldn’t he have pulled both arms up, instead of awkwardly reaching across his body with his free arm?

That was a scumbag hit. Even if he's trying to set a pick, brace in tight and bump the body. He saw him the whole time and easily could have avoided a blind side hit.

Marchand gets 5 for a similar hit and Shaw (whose reputation is certainly no better) gets nothing.

I guess McQuaid was fine so the usual "no harm" bullshit came into play.

Well, it's the Toilet Seats. Did you really think they were going to suspend Shaw?
