Those look great. I hated the dark blue font color. I thought it looked really awful. That looks sharp and I like the sox on the sleeve.

Praise Jeebus. Much, MUCH better.

Only real difference I see between these and the 1998-2008 era road jerseys, besides the Sox on the sleeves, is the lack of a red piping line at the end of the shirt sleeve.

Count me as one who likes the change, but the cynic in me assumes the team will wait 3-4 years until the Sox go back to navy again so they can keep jersey sales humming along.

They could have traded for Trout and this would've been the best move of the offseason.

I like the change too. I never got used to the Red Sox with the blue letters. Which is weird because that's the era I became a fan (the 80s).

This really bugs me on this jersey and the home jersey too. I like the piping line on the shirt sleeve.

And like RedOctober, I hope that they're ditching the blue away jerseys and I'll take it a step further, I hope they lose the red home ones too.

I do wonder if they'll also be ditching the red piping on the road pants for these as well. I hope they don't do that. We'll have to see what the real ones look like.

Agreed on dumping the navy tops. So stupid. The red tops at home I guess I can live with, but the navy ones were ghastly.

I like the red jerseys simply because it's one of their main colors.  Red jersey/white pants is a great look for a team so I hope they keep that going.  But the navy jersey just looks hideous and the kind they went with made them look like a cheap spring training jersey or a BP top.

Since there is no piping on the sleeves, I'm thinking that they are also going to leave the red piping off the pants (in comparison to the 1998-2008 pants with the red piping).

Like the jerseys. Now they need to keep the Red sleeves at home but go back to the blue ones on the road. I loved this look (and the guy wearing it was OK, too).

Would have liked to see the names removed from the road jerseys as well, but this is definitely an improvement.

The 1990-2008 roadies had a nameplate on the back, it doesn't seem like these do, so there's another difference.

Yes, good call. Both of my authentic Sox road jerseys at home from this era have the nameplates on the back.

The blue-lettered road jersey from Fantasy Camp, which is stitched up the same way as the real players ones, does not have a nameplate on the back.

I have a feeling you are right but I hope you are wrong. Without the piping the grey pants just look like sweat pants.

Three or four? Nah. One of the things JWH & Co. will have learned from FSG's ownership of Liverpool is just how many people will buy the jersey if there's a change every single year. Just hope whomever designed the below is kept far away from the Sox uniform designs.

The names on these new road jerseys make perfect sense. The 2009-2013 road jerseys were supposed to be some sort of throwback to the 80s style shirts, and the presence of the names on the backs combined with all the other elements of them made them look even worse.

I'm good with having names on the backs of the 1990-2008 and 2014- style road jerseys. Looks like a modern road shirt now.

But there's no precedent for yearly changes to the jerseys in MLB. In the EPL it's expected, and it's one of the ways supporters can help the clubs directly, as I don't think they have the revenue-sharing of merchandise that MLB has here.

I don't think (and I really hope they don't) they're planning on switching up jerseys every couple of years. I really don't think the fans would go for that.

Personally, I get pissed when visiting teams don't have names on backs. As if I'm supposed to know every player by sight? I think it's almost arrogant leaving names off road jersies.

Maybe the reason people here don't like names on backs is because if they buy a Sox jersey they want no name but just a number on it?

Yeah, I had thought the reason for names on the road jerseys was pretty obvious and quite reasonable.

That's one reason. A Matsuzaka jersey from 2007 is now a Victorino jersey.

Then buy a home jersey.  Aside from the mid-70s pullovers, has the basic style of the home white jersey changed in 50-60 years?  That's a better investment to not be "dated" by either a re-design or a player leaving town anyway.

Wasn't the story that the reason why the Sox went to a new road uniform was that one of the owners (I think it was Werner) liked the way the Red Sox road uniform looked during a Turn Back the Clock night against the Padres and had the new away unis commissioned to look like them?

And his a bonus shot of Greg Maddux from the same game:

Aside from the sleeve piping, the next thing the Sox have to do is change their logo (and I know that technically it's their secondary logo):

The word "BOSTON" needs to be in blue. I don't mind that the font is like the Red Sox font, but the red BOSTON looks strange. I haven't been able to get used to it at all.

Yes, although I think it was JWH who liked the 80s style uniforms that night. Regardless, it was IMO a regrettable change for the worse and I'm relieved they've switched back to something very similar to the 1990-2008 style.

I for one loved the road blues of 3 reasons:

1. History. The road blues have been with the team much longer history than the road reds. Ted Williams hit .400 in blue. Yaz won the triple crown in blue. Clemens won the Cy Young in blue. It visually ties the history of the club together.

2. Symmetry. I liked the symmetry and distinction of red at home and blue on the road. I thought it did a great job showcasing each of the teams two main colors and creating home and road identities.

3. Aesthetic balance. When they first reintroduced the blues, they wore them with blue undershirts and the whole package looked fantastic. Blue letters, blue hats, and blue sleeves made for a very pleasing, unified look. They bowed to fan pressure and switched to red sleeves and that cluttered the look, but had they stuck to the all blue look, it would've eventually been embraced.

Ehhhh....you haven't seen it creeping? Almost every team has alternate jerseys, and those change frequently. Teams are making more ticky-tack changes to their regular jerseys too.

There are some teams that are obviously going to be locked in to their jerseys - I would be shocked if the Red Sox changed their home, the Giants their home, the Yankees anything - but teams are making more and more little changes to keep sales ticking over.

By the way, we argued about the 2009-2013 road jersey... I defended it at the time, but I've come around to you on not really feeling like it stuck in the long run. I would like to switch to navy undershirts for road games, and I would like to go back to the old stirrups/socks, if anybody on the Red Sox wears them.

Was there really a fan backlash over blue undershirts? I feel like going to red at all, even in the home uniforms, was fixing a problem that didn't really need to be solved. It does look good at home, with the exception of the socks, but it's a red overload after a while. It actually looks dated to me.

People complained that they looked like the Yankees on the road. Whatever. This is our century. Had we stuck with the blue undershirts, in 100 years the complaint would be the other way around.

It was more the Blue Sox which made NO sense and DID look like the Yankees.  I do like the 80's blue, though....which is surprising because there weren't good memories for me with them wearing them.

Yeah, I just found an old mailbag with Amalie Benjamin around the time those were introduced and all the bitching from fans was about the blue socks. She talked to someone with the Sox who said they hadn't even considered the sock color when they came up with those things.

Just a horrible idea in every way. I'm glad they're gone and they won't be missed. They of course wore them last year on their way to another WS title, but I'm glad they won the thing at Fenway so all the party shots on the field were in the home whites. The party shots in 2004 and 2007 were of course in the 1990-2008 road unis.

I was fine with the 2009-13 road ones once they went back to red undershirts and socks.   I'm with Dewey that navy lettering rimmed in red might have made for a more interesting jersey.

And I agree with those who are for the removal of the names on the back of the jersey, because it is a cleaner look.  If you're watching games on TV you don't need the name on the back of the jersey, and if you're at the ballpark they announce the players when they come to the plate, so again you don't need the names on the back of the jersey.  It's just something that drives up the cost and clutters the look of the back.

The lettering looks more like the recent blue lettering just in red, no? The 2000s lettering is brighter red, smaller, and noticeable stitching. The new ones have the larger lettering, flat look, and muted color of the recent roads.
