Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere, but found it of interest.
 
A friend pointed me to ManGamesLost.com.
 
They perform analysis that is intended to reflect the impact of players missing games due to injury.
 
There is analysis available for MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL
 
For baseball, from the FAQ page, the following:
 
 
Time Missed Impact To Team (TMITT) is a single-value metric that attempts to quantify the impact of a player not playing for their team due to injury.
 
TMITT-war and its variants are based on several assumptions.
 
  • Players used in the analysis are all players who have appeared on any team’s official 40-man roster throughout the current season, whether they have been injured for any amount of time or not.
  • Current season Wins Above Replacement ratings (WAR as calculated by Baseball-Reference.com) are used. If a player has no current season WAR ratings (i.e. they haven’t played in the current season) their previous season WAR values are used.
  • For players who haven’t played a current season game, their WAR value from the previous season is averaged over a 162-game period, and multiplied by the current season number of games missed due to injury, regardless of how many games they played in previous season (there are issues here, I know).
  • A player spending time on the 7-, 15-, or 60-DL is considered ‘Injured’ and unavailable to the team. At this point, a player not on the DL is considered ‘Available’ to the team, regardless of their playing status.
 
  1. TMITT-wartotal – weights an injured player’s value on the sum of TMITT-warpitcher and TMITT-warposition (below).
  2. TMITT-warpitcher – weights an injured player’s value on their pitching WAR rating (if they have one)
  3. TMITT-warposition – weights an injured player’s value on their position-player WAR rating (if they have one)
  4. TMITT-owarposition – weights an injured player’s value on their position-player oWAR rating (if they have one)
  5. TMITT-dwarposition – weights an injured player’s value on their position-player dWAR rating (if they have one)

A higher TMITT number equals a greater impact of injured players to the team. A high TMITT value for a player reflects a high WAR rating, a high number of games missed due to injury, or a combination of both.
The exact number is not as important as the basic range, versus other players. This is the case with most statistics in the analytics of sport performance.
 
TMITT-total is an archived analysis that is no longer in use on this site. It weighted injured players and their time missed based on how much playing time they would have had if they were healthy. This assumes coaches (good ones) play ‘better’ players more, and not vice versa. TMITT total is a sum of TMITT-batting – utilizing average PAs per game, TMITT-pitching – utilizing average IPs per game, and TMITT-fielding – average innings fielded per game.

What injury and TMITT calculations do you make for the NFL? What are they?
 
  • Out (Team Reported) – Team reported cumulative count of players who did not play in a game that had been previously reported as probable, questionable, or doubtful.
  • IR (Team Reported) – Team reported cumulative count of games missed per player who were listed by a team as being on injured reserve.
  • PUP (Team Reported) – Team reported cumulative count of games missed per player reported as physically unable to play by their team.
  • SUS (Team Reported) – Team reported cumulative count of games missed by players due to suspension.
  • Total Injured – Sum of Out, IR, and PUP counts for a player/team. It excludes games missed by suspended players.
  • TMITT-total – Sum of TMITT-passer, TMITT-rushrec, TMITT-defense, TMITT-kicker for a player or a team
  • TMITT-passer – TMITT calculation for players with at least one pass attempt
  • TMITT-rushrec – TMITT calculation for players with at least one rushing or receiving attempt
  • TMITT-defense – TMITT calculation for players with at least one defensive action
  • TMITT-kicker – TMITT calculation for players with at least one kick or punt attempt
