Simmons is a good piece. Scott and Simmons will greatly improve their bench, although their PG defense is suspect.

Ainge could've hit the strip club all day today with his phone off and he still wins the deadline.

I for one don't mind a lot of these trades and I think it will actually be better for the Cs in the long run. Toronto basically tied themselves into a Gasol/KL/Lowry big three. Gasol is great but how long do 34 year old centers with injury history last? If Philly wants to sign those 4 to big time deals I can’t see how that holds up well with a personality like Butler.

Basically most of the long term contenders to the Celtics pushed a lot of their assets in for this season and locking in rosters for a few years. Cs can obviously still improve

Boston trading guard Jabari Bird to Atlanta, league sources tell Yahoo Sports.

Sources: Despite dealing Jabari Bird, the Boston Celtics will not avoid the luxury tax this season. Boston is now likely to use their MLE to sign a player to a big two-year deal, with the idea of having the second season as part of salary matching in a trade for Anthony Davis.

    Gortat?

Nah, he'd be useless, the refs won't let him get away with his screens if he's on this team.

If the Celtics actually do this, it's a bold message from ownership that we don't care about the luxury tax, we're going for the championship this summer.

Should alleviate some fears that they'd peel off a big salary like Horford if they can acquire AD.

edit: by this summer I mean building to win in 2020, not 2019

Knowing they won't match the offers that he gets as an RFA this summer, I guess. Hard to understand otherwise.

Danny is clearly all in on AD, while we're 5 months away and a lot can change, what do you think that deal will look like?

While losing Tatum looks like a foregone conclusion, will we be able to keep Brown and Smart?

Would have loved to see Mack replace Wanamaker to see if he could have rekindled some chemistry with Hayward.

Today's Laker-Clippers trade is the first between those teams in 36 years, since the Norm Nixon-Byron Scott trade.

To play devil's advocate, a Cavs second is almost like a first.

They're clearly positioning things with that goal.

I think the real sticking point in negotiations will be the MEM pick.

The second year salary would be about $9 million, which combined with Tatum and Time Lord gets you most of the way there. At that point you'd really only need to get Rozier to agree to a sign & trade to make up the salary.

Yes. I'd be really surprised if Smart went in any deal, he doesn't have nearly the value on a rebuilding team as he does on a contender. I only think Brown would be in if Tatum was out, which seems really unlikely.

I'd think the deal is built around Tatum and the Memphis pick. Then whoever the MLE guy is for ballast and whichever or Rozier or Morris would agree to a sign and trade to go to New Orleans. Might add a smaller asset or two like late firsts/seconds/Robert Williams as well.

It'll be Memphis+Brown and not much else of value. and it'll get it done. Mark my words.

I agree it is, but lets say SAC pick ends up around 12. Would you trade 12 for say 25, 31 and Jonathan Simmons?

    I wouldn't.

Celts should get their choice of prime buyout candidate if they can offer the MLE, right?

Might be a big benefit to this year, PLUS the Davis trade (obviously)

It changes everything. It keeps Smart on the Celtics. The other deals had Rozier and Morris agreeing to S&T while Baynes opts in to be traded to NO.

What makes us think the pelicans would even want rozier? Let alone on a new contract for a number of years. Morris either. It’s going to be Tatum, smart, Williams plus grizz pick & at least 1 more first rounder. Plus whatever salary is needed from mle guy or Baynes or whoever.

Yeah Colangelo was such a complete fucking disaster.
But they move on and I think the plan is to resign butler and Harris and JJ and build depth around those guys and Ben and Embiid.
Fultz was going to be very expensive to keep in that situation. But what a fricking disaster.

    Screw Colangelo so hard (both)

It won't be that high. Celtics would be using the taxpayer MLE. Would be around 5.6M in the second year.

That sounds the most realistic to me. Tatum, Smart and multiple picks. Maybe Horford if he opts in and they need him for salary ballast.

But where does the salary come from without Smart? He has to be involved outside of a sign and trade of Rozier which I believe has almost a zero percent chance. If you include all tradable players outside of Tatum, Kyrie, Hayward, Horford and Smart you are still 10 mil short

And the reason I think a SandT with Terry won’t work is basically NO has to give him the best contract available for probably 4 years, and I don’t think many on this board want to pay the draft capital to have NO do that

They wouldn't want Smart either, only for salary purposes. The MLE makes it so they don't need to offer Smart to match contracts. It gets them a lot closer, anyway. It's about Tatum+picks. Everything else is salary filler.

Why would they prefer Smart over Rozier?

Teams pay for offense. Rozier would rack up numbers starting for New Orleans, Smart won't.

Plus Smart has much more value to Boston than Rozier does, so package around Smart/Tatum would be much lesser than Rozier/Tatum.

Yep. Its Tatum, he basically trumps all and I'm sure Danny told Demps he's yours just keep AD healthy. I also think TL will go: local kid, highlight-reel blocks and dunks that will add excitement for a rebuilder and sell some tickets.

Yabu for salary purposes and French Quarter interest? :)

Tatum + TL + Yabu + MLE signing + Memphis pick + Sacramento pick?

I don't think both MEM and Sac will go, likely one or the other. NO really really seems to like Tatum.

We don't know what was said between Ainge and NO. But if he told them, or led them to believe that Tatum will be available (and "nobody is untouchable" is leading them believe it), then he can't go back on that. And that's fine.

Wouldn't the Sac pick be an actual player by the time a trade was made? So wouldn't it be closer to 2-3 mil?

We'll shed a tear for Tatum and losing the 1st round picks are going to sting, but as long as we can keep your boy JB and Smart. I'm on the AD train.

If you signed him, but then you'd have to wait 30 days to trade him. Don't think either side wants this to drag out that long.

edit: 30 days after signing a draft pick to trade him, not 60 as I originally said
