Tharkette is set to upgrade her iphone shortly and is trying to decide between the large or regular size.  Screen size is the only real difference, right?  She's worried about the times she doesn't carry a purse.  That 6 Plus is pretty big for pockets, especially the tiny pockets that women's clothes tend to have.

I'm an Android guy and have encouraged her to make the switch, but it's not happening.

It has a much bigger battery, home screen in landscape mode, Optimal Image Stabilization, and a couple other things.

I have an android phone know, I've had an iphone in the past. I'll consider which is better when I upgrade.  But it won't be a 6 or 6+ in all likelihood, it'll be whatever's newest (or at least pretty new) vs. the newest Androids when that happens.  My phone's only a year old, hopefully it'll be another 3 years before I have to upgrade it.

The Plus seems a bit much, the greater capabilities aside. The "phablets" I have seen look silly, in the context of a phone...

When I zoom into the pic Jayhoz posted and place my 5 on to the image, the 6 seems to be just the right size. I have always had a moderate level of screen size envy.

That said, I will wait a few months for the first beta batch to be sold.

I ordered the regular 6 today.  I like the idea of a larger viewing screen, but hate the idea of not being able to use the phone with one hand more.

I have made clear my current support of the Windows Phone. I have the ability to upgrade every year (Monthly payments never actually own the phone, not sure if it is a good deal or a ripoff). I like the windows phone environment, but even though it exists else where Apple Pay has me intrigued. I have 6 months till i can upgrade at no cost and by then I should have an idea of how IOS8 is and how the new systems work,

I would say there is greater than a 1/3 chance that I head back to apple for my next phone.

Currently iPhone and will likely be getting the 6 soon. I had been planning to make the jump but the more I dig around I just think iOS ultimately is a better fit for me. Unless of course Android fanbois call me names like iSheep, then I might have to reconsider.

I've had the iPhone 5 for nearly two years and don't see anything compelling enough with the 6 or 6+ to jump. I'll probably hold onto the 5 for at least another year.

Mine is about to switch from Android to iOS.  I'm trying to talk her out of it.

Ah the old cell phone effect.

I can't imagine a day when I'd prefer iOS to Android.  My next phone will be something similar to my M8, but I have a little while to go.

My GS3 broke down after a year. I can not wait to make the jump back with the 6 in November. I'm leaning towards the plus as of now.

I am sorry but you are a goddamn moron.

I HATE android phones. HATE.

They are a goddamn trap for people who think they know what they are doing but have no goddamn idea.  When an android is screwed up, they are screwed up.  Your  ette will be all over you while search through forums trying to figure out why her email isn't working and try to figure out if she updated it or not.  Why anyone would put themselves in this position is beyond me.

I always encourage my users to buy iPhones because they are way easier to maintain and far less likely to explode.  And if they do, they can go to the Apple Store.

That said I prefer Androids Phones and sobriety to the Microsoft Surface.  Microsoft can't even make a phone that natively works with Microsoft Exchange.  I hate Microsoft so very very much.

*Point of reference I have owned both Android and iPhone phones personally.  Hell I have even had a blackberry.  I usually just kept whatever work buys me.  The only think I would not ever own is a Microsoft Phone.  I have also never personally owned a Windows PC just Linux and Apple.  So I am partial despite working with 90% Windows machines.

My next phone will be the Moto X. I constantly on the go and constantly on my phone. Purish android, great specs, and an amazing notification system. I'll also be picking up the Moto Hint.

Ha! I have a beat up Note 2 and my next phone would be the Edge when we move back to Seoul.

It is one of the precious few out of the box thinking done by Samsung since the original Note.

I wasn't thinking about getting a new phone, and then I went to a cafe to WFH today and my phone just sort of shut off and won't turn back on, and I had a 95% charge. So my next phone might be a replacement 5S.

edit - and it just turned back on after a bit of a nap, and it wasn't even plugged in. FALSE ALARM, GUYS.

What if I am on Android and considering a move to a non iOS phone? You don't even have the option to migrate to an "irrelevant" OS. I am on a Note 3 now, and will probably just jump up to a Note 4 when it comes out...but the Blackberry Classic is on my radar. I still desperately miss the physical keyboard. No, you do NOT "eventually get used to" a virtual keyboard. Even with SWYPE.

If BlackBerry would just come out with a device in the "classic BlackBerry" form factor, with an Android OS, it would sell well...

The option doesn't exist in a weak attempt to save people from their own potential stupidity.

Sort of where I'm at. Very tempted by Windows phones and all things being equal would prefer one. But am on Iphone 5 now and it works seamlessly. Not real blown away by it and find the Windows phones much sexier. But sex appeal aside, the Apple Pay, the improved camera, and more than anything else the HD Voice and Volte on T-Mobile are tempting. Was thinking of switching to T Mobile anyway because am sick of Verizon ripping me off when I"m overseas. But the best Windows phone on T-Mobile is the 635 and it's pretty middle of the road, so that pushes me again toward Apple.

Long way of saying (I'm thinking this out as I type) that I'll wait until Nov when my contract runs out and see if there are new Windows phones on TMobile and how reports are on call quality on Iphones/TMobile. Best guess is that I go for an Iphone at TMobile -- 80% shot of that, I'd say -- and then choose between the 6 and the 6+. The image stabilization is tempting for me on the Plus, but I'd prefer a smaller phone so probably will get the 6.

That may have bored you all, but was clarifying for me!

Whats stupid about preferring a physical keyboard? It's a matter of taste and preference.

And I am of the belief that the manufacturers have herded the masses away from the physical keyboard because they're more expensive to produce then a full screen device and therefore need to be either sold for more or at a lower margin.  So I am saying that you virtual keyboard people are the ones who have been fooled and manipulated into your preference, just as the giant corporations run by cigar chomping big businessmen for their own massive profits greedily planned all along.

The Illuminati, Bilderbergs and Masons are in on it, too...suckers.

Is this true? The reason manufacturers have herded the masses away from the physical keyboard is because of the runaway success of the iPhone, but is it even true that touchscreens are cheaper?

No one's ever said so, which is why I say I speculate, but I would imagine the manufacturing process for all the moving parts of a physical keyboard would be more complex, therefore more expensive than the process of making a one piece touchscreen.

If you are interested in Windows Phone (despite what everyone else is saying; mine does exactly what I need it to do), the HTC One M8 on Windows Phone is coming to TMobile for the holiday season: http://www.cnet.com/news/t-mobile-will-bring-htcs-one-m8-for-windows-home-for-the-holidays/

Are they going to have a version for left-handed people?

It's a neat concept, but how will a good, protective case fit on there?

IIRC, initial hands-on experiences show that Samsung did a good job of making it not intrusive / distracting / hypersensitive. In other words, it's helpful when you want it as supplemental / useful, and doesn't get in the way when you don't.

A Lost Time
There used to be a time, probably for 2-3 years after the launch of the iphone, when the launch of each new device meant some genuine breakthrough in mobile computing and the way we lead our lives. Those innovations are far and few in between our days. It seems to me that for the vast majority of the users, there is already a device in existence that can take care of their needs, a device they will need to replace simply to experience the pleasure of novelty or because of wear and tear. That device can definitely be either an iphone or an android and for great deal many, a windows phone.

However, for most people who frequent tech sites, i.e. tech enthusiasts and heavy users, the mode of thinking of the first few years when we had to obsess of this or that feature or lack thereof along with the resultant brand loyalty still persist and that's why we argue. But it's fetishism of small differences really and we should be aware of that.

As for me, I ve got a 4s which besides the scratch for something new and exciting is more than adequate for my needs. If I am going to replace it, I am thinking I am going to do so when apple introduces an inevitable iphone mini sometime in the next couple of years.

I'm glad I held off on the G3, because even though there's a chance it turns out to be a gimmick, I'm all over the Edge because it could turn out to be awesome. I usually upgrade every 12-15 months anyways, so if it isn't useful I can switch, but it has a lot of potential so I think I'm gonna give it a try. If not I'll grab the Note 4.

Edit- I don't use cases, but I've already seen the design for a flip case that can cover the entire phone, or just the sidebar, so it can be done. The one thing that has me waffling is the fact that they ditched the metal for plastic on the Edge, and fuck, I hate the feel of my G4.

Citing a year old article, it looks like there is at least some research showing that users are more likely to switch to Apple from Android.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2397833/Android-users-likely-switch-Apples-iPhone-time-smartphone-buyers-Samsung.html

I think most people who have spent enough time with one OS are fairly entrenched in the ecosystem. Apple certainly does a better job of creating an ecosystem that is tougher to leave with all of their products now being made to work with each other. It would make sense if less people left Apple.

That being said, we should all be able to admit that there really isn't all that much that differentiates today's smartphones. They all have insane screens, are awfully fast, and take great photos.

Whenever dealing with moving to/from Apple we need to think of brand loyalty. I don't think there is an electronics brand that has such loyalty/cult following. Apple been able to move from being the small counter culture guy to one of the big boys while their customers still think they are unique and different than all the "sheep" (This isn't meant as insulting to Apple fans, we are all sheep).

People don't leave apple both because of the ecosystem and how they feel about owning the companies product. Also while Iphones seem dominant in the market, they really only have half the market share android does (I think), so unless their product is obviously inferior, you would expect more people to swich to Apple than to Android

Yup, lies, damn lies, and statistics... :)

Given equal churn rates, the percentage of Apple users coming from Android will naturally be about 4x higher, simply given marketshare (80/20). This still doesn't look good for Samsung, but not as bad.

Asking what one has previously-owned is a good question, but not quite the right one - 1) several people (like me) never enjoyed attempts at using iOS as a phone platform and waited for Android (or Nokia, in my case) to be a viable alternative, 2) iOS got a lot of early-adopters, while Android got later adopters and more casual users (evidenced by the 40% share in crow's Daily Mail article).

The real question to answer this question is percentage of current Android users directly switching to Apple (and vice versa).

What'd good is that we all now have a lot of first hand knowledge, which comes in handy.
