Shouldn’t have doubted Gretzky. 12 in four games and 15 in five games. And 10 assists to go with the 15 goals.

LOL, yep, basically, there's nothing anyone can do on offense in the NHL that Gretzky didn't do, and better.

Apparently, because of Laine's 5 goal game, a fan won a million dollars. Apparently, there is a contest that applies to any Jets, Canucks, Flames and Oilers games, and if a player from any of those teams scores 5 goals, a fan wins a million.

    http://www.espn.com/nhl/recap?gameId=401044673

according to the article, it's the 61st time a player has scored 5 in NHL history, and first since Johan Franzen in 2011. Last time someone had 6 was Daryl Sittler against the Bruins in 1970.

Laine has 3 hat tricks, and 16 goals in 10 games in November.

Kings just lost to VAN who came into today with 8 straight losses.

Kings are about to have a massive fire sale soon.

I think the only desirable assets they have right now might be Toffoli, Hagelin, and Muzzin.

Yeah, it’s sponsored by one of the massive supermarket chains here, and it’s pretty much a standard part of a broadcast of a western Canadian team’s game. I just assumed it couldn’t happen anymore.

Also, how this flew under the radar, I don’t know, but Antoine Rousell bit Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s fingers. Punishment: $5,000.

    Something about Vancouver...

The Buffalo Sabres have the most points in the NHL.

Edit: They’ve played the most games and only have 13 ROW, so they’re a little smoke and mirrors, but still a good story. Skinner leads the league in goals, he’s going to get paaiiiiddd this offseason.

Kings putting Kovalchuk on the 4th line tonight, and only played him 25 seconds on the PP last night. Not sure what they’re trying to accomplish, but I can’t see this ending well. If they aren’t going to play him on the PP, what’s the point?

I haven’t really watch the Kings but he is their leading scorer albeit only on a 52 point pace. Maybe a shade lower than what they hoped they would get, but I don’t think he’s the reason they suck.

Chicago is apparently trading Nick Scmaltz to Arizona...

Edit: Friedman adds that Dylan Strome is one of the pieces going to Chicago.

They are a team full of Backes-level contracts. People underplaying their cap hit by 25-33%

Yeah, I get that. They’re old, slow and on bad contracts. They are kind of like Detroit was a few years ago at the end of the Datsyuk era. The Kovalchuk singeing was essentially an all-in move. I guess I just don’t understand what their end-game here is with Kovalchuk. They are 2 months into a 3-year deal with him. If they’re at the point where they’re ready to punt, I don’t see the point in stripping away his TOI, especially his PP time. They should be feeding him as much time as possible to try and pump his counting stats up.

Anyways, the Arizona/Chicago deal ended up being Nick Schmaltz for Dylan Strome and Brendan Perlini. I like the Chicago end of the deal. Schmaltz had a 52 point season lead on the back of shooting 18% and playing with Kane. He is young, but that seems closer to a ceiling for him. Perlini seems like a middle 6 winger, maybe he plays well alongside Kane. Strome is a wild card. He was the 3rd pick in 2015 behind McDavid and Eichel and ahead of Marner but he hasn’t gained any traction in the NHL. He managed 53 points in 50 games in the AHL last season, so there may be something there but reports are his skating is what holds him back. He’ll be reunited with Alex DeBrincat. Strome had 2 monster years in the OHL playing with DeBrincat and some guy named McDavid. I think Chicago needs to make these roll of the dice type moves where they move out 1 young skilled guy for 2. Of Strome pops, this could be a home run.

Perlini and Strome for Schmaltz. These two teams make some odd trades. My first instinct is that Chicago won this one, Strome is still only 21 and has a ton of skill. Schmaltz is the more proven player, but I think he's been carried a lot by Kane. Seems like Chicago is selling high and buying low.

Whoa, you pretty much never see GM firings in season. Figured Hakstol would go.

Habs are waiving Karl Alzner today. 3 years at $4.625 million AAV left on that contract.

Didn’t see that one coming. I figured Hakstol would have been shown the door. Of course, that could still be coming. Hextall has done a ton to build a pipeline of talent, but he’s very conservative with using it. The affinity for the likes of Lehtera and MacDonald - I’ll never understand it.

I’m not going to live forever. Just bring up Hart and Myers already and quit playing this mediocre group of goaltenders and third-pairing defensemen.

Probably, they are a lot more fun to watch than I expected them to be this year, too. It was another 1 goal win (OT), too.

Was there a rule change this year? I like numbers so while I don't really watch hockey anymore, I do look at the leader boards and notice trends. There are 10 guys on pace to score as many or more goals than the leader in goals scored last season and 20 guys on pace to score more goals than the 2016 leader.

I was a fan of guys scoring 60+ goals a year. If it's trending that way, maybe I'll start watching again.

They shrunk the goalie equipment but that is about it. The game has just evolved to more of a speed and skill game than a grind it out game. Goons and meatheads have organically been phased out so there’s skill on the bottom lines as opposed to just the top lines. There’s also a crap load of high end young talent in the league right now.

Scott Darling waived. That contract turned out to be a disaster. Really curious what kind of deal Bobrovsky gets next summer.

    Former Bruins Weird News Alert:
Paille went over to the SEL, and in Nov 2017 took a blindside hit that basically ended his playing career.
Now, the guy who hit him has been charged with assault for it.

    Oh, Auston Matthews is back.

Little rusty, though, only 2 goals in his first game.

If a Calgary Flames player scores 5 goals, someone wins a million dollars courtesy of Safeway (or more accurately, the insurance company betting against that happening)...for whatever that’s worth.

We’re mercifully reaching the end of the Nylander saga in Toronto. He has to sign before 5pm tomorrow to be eligible to play this season. Feels like he either signs or sits out. A trade is complicated. Because of the hold out, when does sign, his year 1 cap hit will be much higher than the AAV because it is spread over a shorter time period. So if he signs with a $7 million AAV, the year 1 cap hit is north of $10 million. That is hard for teams to fit in, and Toronto isn’t in a position to take much salary back because of the incoming Marner and Matthews deals which is kinda why the Nylander scuttle has happened in the first place. That said, Carolina has been the team most heavily linked as a Nylander trade partner and they could do it.

Friedman’s report this week was that they are $300K per year apart, and he also added that he thinks one way or another this will be Nylander’s last season in Toronto. This is an interesting case, given the monster RFA class coming up this summer. Matthews, and Marner in Toronto, Winnipeg has Laine and Connor, Colorado has to deal with Mikko Rantanen, Matthew Tkachuk in Calgary. The list goes on, this Nylander deal is going to be a market setter (is that even a word?).

A Carolina/Toronto trade is pretty scary, I think both teams could really improve themselves.

He is on IR, but Pesce and picks/prospects for Nylander almost makes too much sense.

Edit: There’s some Philly chatter out there today. That would probably be the most Flyers thing ever. Fire the GM, make blockbuster trade without a new GM.

Wilson tossed tonight for an illegal check to the head.

I think he clipped the shoulder first, but 100000% predatory and unnecessary. Blindside and way late. Last one was 25 reduced to 17. Don’t know where they start with this.

It's still five and a game for interference even if he didn't hit the head - a textbook example of it.

It’s Matt Cooke levels of “he just doesn’t get it” now, except Cooke could kill penalties. What exactly does Wilson bring to today’s NHL?

He can play legitimate hockey, which makes his cheap hits even more inexplicable.

He has a probably unsustainable shooting percentage, but he has six goals and 12 points in just eight games and plays a ton of minutes for Washington.

What a joke. I never want to hear lip service about player safety again from these clowns. Discipline is handed out strictly on the basis of how much public outcry there is. Guarantee if he hit Tavares like that he’d be done for the year.
