My understanding is that non-cellular devices use the database of Wifi network names and their known locations from GPS devices for location services. This is also a fallback/secondary source for cellular devices. I don't believe it's based on IP addresses. This was also how the first iPhone did location services since it lacked GPS (at that time they used SkyHook for a database, not sure if they have their own proprietary one now or what).

my cell-dead Ipad showed the same erroneous IP geo location as my laptop did at the beginning of the season, as it always does at the beginning of every season since AT&T doesn't publish any fine detail of many of the IP blocks.

So my MLB.tv app on PS3 now will not get past the loading screen (well, it blinks to a blank screen and tells me to check my internet connection, which I've done and it's fine), and then it freezes on a blank screen until I quit the app, where the PS3 then simply restarts itself. Awesome.

Anyone have this issue? Deleted and reinstalled the app, all that jazz, nothing. Can't seem to find a normal solution via Google...

I'm not having that issue on PS3.

I did have that issue at the start of the season.  I think I uninstalled it 3-4 times before it worked.

I'm also not having that issue on the PS3.  I have had to reboot my router for the PS3 to figure out that my connection was good in the past, then I ran the connection test in the PS3's network settings.

lately on Apple TV, mlbtv has been saying I am not allowed to watch a game in my present location, which is not correct. I have to restart the ATV to get to accept my location. As far as I know I have a static IP. Weird.

Thanks those who responded--JMD that's an interesting idea, I'll give that a shot now (rebooting the router)

I've also had significant buffering issues on my PS3 with both MLB.TV and HBO Go when no other device has been having any issue.  The number of times I have had to hear Don and Remy say the same thing twice topped out at 10 times in 1 game (2 innings before I gave up and went to a computer to watch). It might be my placement of the PS3 relative to those other devices and the router, or the PS3's wireless hardware/firmware might just be a tiny bit flaky, and it manifests itself via those apps.

I've had issues with the feed looping in the past. It's not an issue with your PS3's wireless connection. I have mine wired to the router and it would have the tendency to do the same thing. To the point where I would have to either restart the feed or abandon it altogether.

I honestly think it's the PS3 app that's the issue. I had so many issues getting it to work this year that I pretty much stopped watching Sox games until I learned of the existence of the Chromecast extension for MLB At Bat. Since then, I've watched all of the games exclusively through that (the ones I can actually watch, anyway).

Unable to access the game tonight via Sony blu-ray...but can on the laptop and Chromecast using the app....

edit to add:  For those with access issues has it been resolved? I'm thinking it's the app on the Sony blu-ray.  Also, last week MLB.tv charged my CC (since credited) $1.  When I inquired I was told it was to verify my address.  Not quite certain with their response.

Works fine today....

Sorry if this has been covered already, but its a long thread and I want to get back to the game- does anyone know what the normal MB rate is for the mlb.tv stream?  I just noticed that my connection has done over 2.5 GB in just the last hour, and all I'm running is the game feed and the SOSH gamethread.  So that seems ridiculously high.  Is my computer getting highjacked or something?

I just bought the mlb.tv sub on special and have a question. We had to change the button from NexDef to No PlugIn Required in order to stop stuttering and stopping with our computers. The disadvantage is that we can't watch the condensed games that way. The mlb tech says that you need NexDef for that. But when I run the AtBat app on my tablet, I can watch the condensed games with nary a stutter. Is this just the difference b/n mlbtv and the app, or the difference b/n the laptops and the tablet (Google Nexus)? In every case, we are using the same teeny bandwidth.  It doesn't seem to be the size of the picture per se, b/c even when we minimize the screen on the laptop, it still stutters and stops during condensed games.

Anyone else having a problem with mlb.tv telling you every single game is blacked out (with the message "video fro this game is blacked out in your ...", with the "..." actually there, not city or market or whatever)? I'm trying to watch on my Xbox 360...this is a first.

The service really does suck this year.  I've got 43 Mbps on the download and 21 on the upload and my signal to noise ration is very healthy at 34.  There is no indication of anything on my end being wrong but it keep freezing and refuses to get any closer than 2 minutes behind the live broadcast.  Ridiculous.

What are you using for a client?

I've had more random issues this year than I have in a long time, but nothing consistent. I know when I used the PS3 I had constant issues. It seemed like the PS3 client didn't buffer nearly enough and any small wifi or network slowdown would choke the feed. Since I swapped to primarily watching on the Apple TV I've had a far better experience.

It's the PS3 app that is giving me trouble.  I might look into a google chromecast for the rest of the season, but I'm planning on switching to EI next season.

Unable to access the game tonight via Sony blu-ray player that comes with the MLBtv app soooo....tried it on the laptop, get connected to the game which is on the commercial break.  Game comes on but unable to view full screen then after one pitch to Pedroia goes to commercial break again...WTF?  I'm with the others switching to EI next year or sooner when they cut the subscription price.

If the Sox were competitive this year I'd consider a mid-season switch.  As is, I'll deal with MLB.TV's sorry excuse for a product.

I have quit trying to watch the game on the Roku. It freezes, and ends up several minutes behind the live broadcast and when i try to go to "live" it just stops, then starts, meaning i am never actually live. I just watch on my computer, or listen on WEEI via mlbtv.com  It is still an ok investment just for the EEI streaming but it is a pretty shitty product right now.

We were having the same issues w/ the roku upstairs in the bedroom. Yesterday I moved it to the kitchen, also taking the chromecast up to the bedroom. Now both are working much better in their new positions. Who knows why and if it will last?

The PS3 app had an update today.  You'd think they might have put some work into the skipping and delay issues, but nope.  They unveiled a new skin and some new features, and now show you historical highlights during the commercial breaks... which skip and freeze and rubber band just like the live feed.  I've never seen a product go from so good to so bad in such a short time before.

Amazing.

If I were you I'd at least try dropping $35 on a chrome cast or $50 on a roku and see if it made a significant difference in quality.

This has been my experience as well. I popped into this thread at the advice of another poster after my rant against Sunday Ticket online. FWIW, I've not experienced any issues with reliability or quality of streams this year, but this year I've switched from primarily Roku/PS3 to all Apple (radio on the iPhone, TV broadcasts on the Apple TV and iPad). I've noticed that the Apple TV picture isn't quite as crisp as PS3 has been in years past, but it's still comparable to HD and it's reliable. I sympathize with the folks who've been dealing with a bad product (again, Sunday Ticket online was so miserable that I didn't even watch it for free), and this doesn't do anything to improve the situation, but maybe it really is dependent on the client.

The other thing the new PS3 app does is not allow you to click on the game until it starts, which of course means missing at least a small handful of the first pitches of the game.

The update's been awful.

I click on the icon of the headphones as opposed to the icon of the TV and then i get a dropdown menu of the feeds.

I think I'm going to ditch MLBtv for next year and just subscribe to Extra Innings.  This year has been such a disappointment. The PS3 app sucks, the iPad app lags all the time, and I'm not going to watch a game on a 4" iPhone.

There are a very limited number of MLB.tv clients that support overlaying a different audio stream. The only ones I know of are internet browser w/a PC or Mac (and using the old player with NexDef installed and enabled), PS3, and possibly Roku(?).

The iPad uses location services, while the aTV and laptop will both locate you based on where some database says your IP is located (which could be wrong).

I see, makes sense. I figured that the location services was somewhat limited on a non-cell enable Ipad considering it doesn't have GPS capability. But it must be using other IP addresses it can see on my various neighbor's wifi I guess.

The database of IPs my ATT Uverse uses is most certainly wrong (I have had this convo with them before - they don't take the time to discern fine location detail in the IP blocks - in CT you will be located somewhere in the middle of the state like Wallingford).

This suits me just fine though, I really only watch games via my Ipad anyway.

I watched a couple of spring training games with the Roku and no issues.  Listened to the game this afternoon on the MLB AtBat app with no problems.

I haven't noticed this discussed anywhere, so this seems like the right place. Apparently the terms and conditions have been updated in a way that's very unfavorable to circumventers of blackouts and sharers of passwords. Specifically, they're terminating users who circumvent blackouts and issuing a $100 fine, and they're threatening to charge anyone full price who uses another user's password.

You can read for yourself at the bottom of the page here.

And here's the relevant language:

IF YOU CIRCUMVENT, OR ATTEMPT TO CIRCUMVENT, ANY BLACKOUT RESTRICTION OR OTHER USE RESTRICTION: YOUR SUBSCRIPTION WILL BE SUBJECT TO IMMEDIATE TERMINATION AND A CHARGE OF ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($100.00) FOR EARLY TERMINATION; YOU MAY BE SUBJECT TO LEGAL ACTION; AND MLBAM RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REPORT SUCH MISCONDUCT TO APPROPRIATE LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES.

SHARING OF PASSWORDS TO ANY SERVICE, PRODUCT OR THE MLBAM PROPERTIES IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. IN ADDITION TO THE RIGHTS AND REMEDIES AVAILABLE TO MLBAM AS SET FORTH IN THE PREVIOUS PARAGRAPH, MLBAM RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CHARGE USERS THE FULL SUBSCRIPTION FEE FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL WITH WHOM THE USER HAS SHARED HIS/HER PASSWORD.

How would they be identifying these violators? And what's the probability that they'll be able to enforce these terms?
