I had a chance in the car today to listen to both Fatty and Dog.

Jets/Pats game was a big topic. Similar takes in some ways.

These two really, really miss each other, whether they would ever admit it or not. The sum is greater than the two parts in this instance.

Kind of sad, really.
Agreed they're both average alone. It sucks to be honest. Care to explain what Mike said about the game last night? After, witnessing last nights game I didn't have the heart to turn it on today.

We know who Mike had $$ on...he has spent the first 90 minutes of his show today on the end of the Steelers-chargers game

I'm assuming yoru talking about the overturned touchdown at the end by the Steelers. Did he get clarification on why it was overturned, because for the life of me those looked like legal lateralls. There was a TON of confusion over that call for some reason also.

his point was that the NFL ahs no right to do what they did and it made no sense the way it was done. he also said that 85% of the money on the game was on pittsburgh to cover

He needs to stop with this gambling talk. It is giving off a conflict-of-interest vibe with his inside knowledge being in the media.
He makes weekly college and pro picks against the spread every week, so the conflict of interest would be long gone.

Not pointing out that the play effected the payout, on a game that probably had above average action on it, makes the story itself kind of toothless. Who cares if the Steelers win by 1 or 7?

Just saw this post.

I'm not doubting what you heard, but I'm astounded that Francessa would say this. Perhaps he needs to take a refresher course in the dynamics of how the betting line is set.

I tune into WFAN today, and there's a longer than usual hiatus before Francesca comes on. When he does, it's clear he's just gobbled something down, because he's smacking his lips and hiding burps. Radio gold.

:)

In the old days with Russo often times coming out of a commercial break it would be Dog who would take a few calls by himself to cover for Francesa who would later waddle into the studio and get up to speed. It was clear to all that Mike had just gotten back from teaching a poor, unsuspecting Astoria Studios toilet a severe lesson it would not soon forget.

Fatman Scoop (former Hot97 DJ) just called Mike to discuss the Plaxico Burress incident. Some classic radio. Pretty sure Francesa said Holla.

I have to admit that I barely listen to WFAN in the afternoon's anymore. With the excessive amount of commercials and the lack of Mad Dog, the show doesn't have the same draw as it used to.

I live 3 avenues over from where I work, so I have a 10 minute walk home and I used to listen to 660 religiously. Now, I listen to Michal Kay, believe it or not, or I slap on a music station because of the aforementioned commercials. Or I don't bother listening to anything at all and keep the radio in my pocket because it's uncanny how rarely either show isn't interrupted by commercials during this 10 minute walk. I have an AM/FM radio to begin with because I like to listen to Opie and Anthony on the way to work, which doesn't have nearly the same amount of interruptions.

And when I get home and change out of my suit and shite, I always used to put on 660, commercials or not. Now I put on CNBC on the TV. Lame, but a good indication of how I feel about Mike as a stand alone performer.

Completely agree. I've tried Mike alone several times and I just can't get into it.
Not to complain after a 19 year run, but it's just really depressing that one of my favorite things in life is gone forever.

According to reports his ratings haven't changed so that's why he has stopped looking for a partner. The funny thing is I have always been a huge Dog fan and in the recent months I have found myself listening to Mike more and more. I think there is still a decent shot they could work together again. Either in 5 years or if Sirius goes out of business. I'm sure Dog in private is miserable about the decision he made. Getting on that show is a joke, he has no callers. No one cares. For a man who was never about money this has to be crushing for him.

I dunno about that.
Dog was of the mind that the Mike & Russo on-air relationship had run its course and that he needed a change. Once he became a free agent he took the highest money offer out there and he may regret that he has become a non-entity on sat radio, but I don't think he regrets leaving Mike. He wanted to carry a show by himself. He felt it was time. I think he still feels that way. There's no going back.

I always preferred Francessa to Russo, but its tough to listen to Fatso all by himself. He'll say the same thing over and over and over again for 12 straight minutes between commercials.

"Folks, if you don't think Plaxico is important to the Giants... The Giants don't win that Green Bay game last year without Burress. Its going to be a lot harder for the Giants to win a big playoff game without Plaxico. Burress destroyed Green Bay. There's no way they win in Green Bay without him. Remember the Green Bay game."

Repeat ad naseum.

Mike ahs been doing that for years. he ahs one point or value-added comment and repeats it over and over. however, in the past, he filled roughly 3 hours of air-time now he ahs 6.5 hours to fill so it is a lot worse on the listener

next week he is doing "legends week" with former NYC all-time great athletes in studio for the entire show. LT and others. Strange to be doing that during baseball's winter meetings, but whatever. maybe Keith hernandez?

Yeah, but before he had Russo to interrupt him or to disagree with him. Now he's just blathering on and on to himself.

Mike flipping out in th opening "I hope the yanks dont get sabathia! You dont wanna be a Yankee? GET LOST!"

ha love it.

EDIT: and then a regular moron caller Lisa, "Doesnt he know what an honor and privilege it is to be a Yahhhnkee"

yeah, such an honor to be amongst the likes of Nady, Gardner, Dick Swisher, No-K Igawa, Hughes, Chambermaid, Hollywood Cano, 33rd brother of the Molina family, and Johnny of Nazareth.

Nothing annoys me about MFY fans more than that attitude. What a bunch of horseshit.
Mike is basically calling out Cashman and in the process poisoning the water for CC. "Who wouldn't want to live in New York ?" Francesa asks his listeners. I wish his producer had cut to California Dreaming by the Mamas and Papas.

I don't recall his position last year when Santana was on the trade block, but he's criticizing Cashman for not trading Hughes & Co. for him last year, and he's going after CC way too strong this year to make up for the mistake. I think Mike was for trading the kids, and I agree with him 100% on it being a mistake not to get Santana.

Fun to listen to, that's for sure. Especially with Tokyo Sweeney being in usual Yankee sympathizer mode.

He's always a dick to Sweeney, but when Sweeney goes and says that Johan was a greater durability risk than a 300 pound pitcher with 1700 major league innings on his arm he kind of walks into it.

FWIW, I think Mike is 100% right on CC. They made a great offer almost a month ago. The guy is clearly saying to West Coast teams "match that, and I'm yours" and probably is trying to figure out if $20 million less is something he can live with. The Yankees need him, but if the guy doesn't want to pitch there, he doesn't want to pitch there. Not a lot you can do in that position.

To be fair, some main board posters had the same attitude re: Giles and his desire to stay in SD instead of coming to Boston this year. I thought it was horseshit there too, but Sox fans are not immune from the mindset.

Oh I agree. It's just more pronounced with the 26 rings crowd but they're not necessarily the only ones.

From Rotoworld:
Carl Pavano's agent, Tom O'Connell, said the Red Sox are among a few teams interested in his client.
Pavano spent some time in Boston's farm system earlier in his career. He went 4-2 with a 5.77 ERA in seven starts last season with the Yankees and hasn't pitched a full season since 2004, which should make him a cheap grab.

sure, but come on, you KNOW there as a HUGE difference. I took the main board remarks as more "how could giles not want to go to a winning team, that is pretty much guaranteed contending every year", instead of "the magic of the pinstripes and mystique of the shitty ballpark and the cemetary in left field is the make up magical things such as integrity and honor! OH TO DON THE PINSTRIPES IS AUTOMATIC SANCTITY!"

I don't disagree with Mike's rant about C.C., but did anybody listen to the whole thing? To me the only question is whether that rant was 1) the most repetitious rant in the history of the show, or 2) the most repetitious rant made by any human being in any conceivable format in the history of mankind.
God do I miss Chris Russo.

Should be an interesting show today with Sabathia signing less than 24 hours after Mike and most of his callers told CC to go bleep himself.

Good segment with Rick Peterson. I was on and off the phone, but, he likes the K-rod signing, seemed lukewarm on the CC deal, and really likes Lowe. I am certain it will be on the FAN's homepage this evening.

I can't believe he is defending Wang the way he is. His main argument is "OMG HE WON 19 GAMEZZZ". Every big game he shrinks up like a prune and last 4 IP. Mike's lack of quality baseball knowledge is really showing today.
I think you're misreading Mike's point of view. From all the times I've listened to him I'm pretty confident Mike has a good understanding of baseball, and knows perfectly well that Sabathia is better than Wang. Mike's more agnostic on Blyleven than me, and Mike uses wins and RBIs more than I would like. But he understands baseball.

This is Mike's Yankee fanboyism coming through instead. Sabathia did not show, in his eyes, the proper respect towards the Yankees and Mike probably feels (I didn't catch today's show but I bet this is what he's thinking) that Sabathia really did not want to join the Yankees because it's the YANKEES, but because Cashman gave him 7 years and to go to California would have meant leaving 50-60 mil on the table, which nobody in their right mind is going to do. Mike knows as we know that if the Giants/Dodgers/Angels offered the same money Sabathia is wearing that team's jersey right now and talking about how great it is to play in the Golden State where he grew up. So Mike feels slighted and is going to shit on Sabathia for a couple days until he feels better.

God do I miss Chris Russo.
Probably belongs in Russo's thread, but Dog was predictably defiant during his discussion of Sabathia.

Basically said:
  • Yankees will closely stage-manage the press conference and minimze Sabathia's exposure or deflect questions about the $$
  • Said he didn't want to hear Sabathia say anything about the magic of the pinstripes because its not true and everybody knows it
  • If he's honest, Sabathia will say there's nothing wrong with taking the offer because it was the highest, and that the "privilege" of playing for the MFYs had nothing to do with it
Didn't focus a lot of attention on performance (regular season or playoff).

Then he had Len Trost on (Yankees COO) and basically ripped the MFYs for trying to pawn off the interest on the stadium bonds onto the public and that the building of the stadium has zero value to the average NYC resident so why should they pay for it.

He was in an enjoyable "rip the Yanks" mode this afternoon. :c070:
