Former Cubs closer Carlos Marmol signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox.

Old friend Daniel Butler is back
on a minor league deal.

Some of the other guys in camp on non-roster invites/minor league contracts
:
Sox farmhand RHP William Cuevas, ex-Giants third baseman Chris Dominguez, former Reds second-round draft pick OF Ryan LaMarre, ex-Angels right-hander Sean O’€™Sullivan, catcher Ali Solis, and former Red Sox right-hander Anthony Varvaro.

And ex-Tigers LH OF Brennan Boesch.

Also in camp on NRIs:
Pitchers Kyle Martin, Roman Mendez, Danny Rosenbaum, C Sandy Leon, 1B Allen Craig, IF Josh Rutledge and IF Sam Travis.

Question: What's the status of Allen Craig? Is his contract guaranteed now and counting vs. the cap since he was recalled last year?

Edit: And according to Cots it does count 9MM against the "cap" in 2016 and 11MM in 2017.

Since he listed as NRI I would guess no as far as counting against the cap. His contract is guaranteed money for him unless he opts out, which is doubtful, since he would not be able to sign anywhere for anything close to what he currently has.

Unless he's on the 40-man roster, he gets paid his salary but it does not count against the Red Sox payroll for luxury tax purposes. He is currently off the 40-man roster, so he's playing to impress someone and maybe get himself back in the bigs. Otherwise he's spending the year in Pawtucket.

Veterans in camp on NRIs are always a motley crew, but there are some interesting players in that group. Boesch has had a rough couple seasons, but he's pretty accomplished for a sixth outfielder and a newly-healthy Varvaro could be a candidate for the last man in the 'pen.

I'm kind of glad we have Craig (off the 40-man, naturally). If he were to get his swing back together — another year away from the foot injury? — we could use another big bat in the 1B-DH-LF rotation. I'd give slim odds of that happening at this point, but those odds aren't zero.

“@JMastrodonato: John Farrell says Brian Bannister and the Red Sox are hoping RHP Carlos Marmol can try a new arm slot that helps him bounce back into form”

Bradford with a short column on Craig. http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2016/02/19/allen-craig-intent-on-getting-back-on-red-sox-radar/

"managed a .274 with a .718 OPS and four home runs in 93 games with Pawtucket ... I felt like I did a good job. I held my head high, worked hard and I felt I did pretty well down there. I had good at-bats, walked a lot, got my hits. I did OK and I feel alright about it."

If Allen feels that a .718 OPS is doing a good job, he needs to raise expectations.

The wrong side of the bridge....
@PeteAbe
#RedSox feel Carlos Marmol's arm slot is too over the top. They want him to lower it and believe his control will improve. Velo still good.
Interesting. Brooks player card shows that between 2008 and 2013:

1. Horizontal release point moved toward the 1B side
2. Vertical release point moved upward
3. Perhaps as a consequence, the difference in H-mov between fastball and slider narrowed dramatically.

I guess the obvious question is, why did his delivery change in this way in the first place?

Don't armslots usually move lower in the case of injury? His slider did increase in velocity in that time, maybe he thought that was worth the drop in movement (which he many not have known he was sacrificing).

Lisa Carney wrote a two part series this week on NRIs this week. The first part explains what they are and how they relate to the MLB roster.

In 2016, some familiar names looking to make good on various MLB non-roster invites are old friends Bronson Arroyo (Nationals), Craig Breslow (Marlins), and Will Middlebrooks (Brewers). It’s hard not to root for them just a bit.
The second part covers the Red Sox NRIs.

William Cuevas (25 years old) may be nearing the end of prospect status, but there’s no denying the numbers that mark his potential to contribute soon. In seven minor-league seasons, he sports a 1.192 WHIP and a respectable 7.5 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9. 2015 was a strong year for him as he made the Eastern League All-Star team, earned a promotion to Triple-A and achieved personal bests in wins (11) and strikeouts (128).
