Yeah, he shut the Rays down. He also got pulled after 69 pitches, 6IP. Montoyo bringing all the Rays tricks over to T.O.

The Mets are going to need to sign a vaguely competent 5th starter if they are going to make an effort to compete this year.

Vargas' line today at Braves: 1/3 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 4ER (1 man still on base), including 1 bases loaded walk

The Mets got the 4 runs back the very next inning, they just knocked out Newcomb in the second.

Exhibit 647233 in the craziness of short-term baseball streaks:

The Dodgers started off the season looking like the best team in baseball, 8-2 with a +36 run differential. Since then, they have lost six straight with a -20 run differential and are back to .500.

They have won nine in a row, sweeping OAK, NYY and SEA consecutively, and they have a Forrest Whitley for Wade Miley upgrade coming at some point, plus Tucker and Alvarez waiting as OF reinforcements. Tucker will be the top OF prospect in MLB according to mlb.com once Jimenez and Robles graduate in a few weeks, and Alvarez will be up to 8th. Alvarez is still 21 (22 in June) and is crushing it in AAA currently, 6 HRs in 32 ABs and a 1.457 OPS (!!!).

    http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2019?list=of

I feel it's somehow a little overlooked that only literally the best Red Sox team in their history has stood between consecutive Astros/Dodgers World Series, and those are the teams to beat as of now again (IMO obv), even though the Dodgers just lost six in a row.

one MVP is defending his crown so far. Yelich has absolutely destroyed the Cardinals so far. (Goldy has done the same to the Brewers)

Tim Beckham with two more errors on consecutive plays -- 7 on the season. I almost feel bad for him because the entire Seattle team has no idea what they're doing in the field. At least 9 out of 10 first basemen would have caught his throw on the first error, but they're playing Edwin Encarnacion in the field (and he probably should have been the one charged).

On the next play, left fielder Domingo Santana tried to get the lead runner at third even though he had a 0% chance of accomplishing that, so Beckham cut off the throw and tried to get the trail runner... the problem was instead of throwing to a teammate or the area of second base, he threw it to the middle of nowhere (actually, that's not entirely true, he nearly skulled the umpire).

None of Beckham, Encarnacion, Santana or Dan Vogelbach should ever have a glove on.

He didn’t play tonight but add Jay Bruce to the only DH list too, they are like a slow-pitch softball team.

One amazing thing about baseball is that even if you've seen thousands of games like all of us, you see things you have never seen before surprisingly often. Here are three from just today:

    https://atmlb.com/2UBCHSp

Luis Castillo, the Reds pitcher, punched a clean base hit to RF but inexplicably didn't run and was easily thrown out at first.

    https://www.12up.com/posts/6345988-...-to-first-base-on-ball-3-in-hilarious-blunder

Teoscar Hernandez on first, Brandon Drury takes a ball and trots to first with a walk. Except in reality it was ball 3, and Hernandez was tagged out as he trotted to second, taking his cue from Drury.

Yu Darvish threw a 99 MPH fastball that hit the batter, then the ump, then the catcher.

Tim Anderson gets hit by a pitch and both he and Keller get ejected, Keller for the intentional throwing at the batter and Anderson for, wait for it, being angry and yelling at him.

    And it's 2-2 right now.

    The umpire: Joe West.

Maybe one day Manfred will have a press conference and tell players to cut the shit with the bean balls over the unwritten rules. It's great that you have your Let the Kids Play ad campaign, but you need to address the target audience i.e. the pitchers who get their feeling so bruised by a bat flip that they throw a deadly weapon at another player. Nah, keep trying to shave 30 seconds of the game and ban shifts, that'll make your sport more popular with the kids.

It also ended Seattle's record of homering in 20 straight games to begin the season.

Carlos Carrasco is off to a real Jeckyll & Hyde start:
    His #1 & #3 starts: 5 IP, 16 H, 12 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
    His #2 & #4 starts: 12 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 24 K

Rays club the O’s 8-1. HR from Yandy and Lowe and Choi.

Yandy still doesn’t elevate the ball as much as you’d want, but they got him doing it just enough to hit 20 degree launch angle laser beam HR like the one tonight. That’s 4 HR in 59 AB this season with TB vs 1 in 265 AB in his career prior to this year.

Rays score 2 in 8th and 1 in 9th to tie up game but then blow it in 11th. Lose 6-5 to O’s. Extra bullpen usage not helpful going into another opener/bullpen game tomorrow to cover for Snell skipping a start due to a booboo toe. They will send out bullpen Fri, Morton Sat and Glasnow Sun against the Sox

Bad break, but not a bad call. If the batter-runner interferes on an uncaught third strike, he’s out and it’s a dead ball (in case there are other runners on base).

Anderson, a black man, was suspended for saying the N word

Sports talk radio is going to be a tire fire.

I wonder how many WEEI Talking heads get suspended for saying something they shouldn’t.

Yeah, and you're going to get all those people who say, "BuT ThEy ShOuLdN't SaY It EiThEr!" (insert Spongebob .gif).

If he was tossed for the f-word, I get it because it's one of those "magic words" for umpires some times, but if it was for the other word... oh boy.

My friend Diane Firstman does updates on the race to .247, 24/7 but she went above and beyond earlier today with some next level stuff about how often it's happened for him each season, plus opportunities.

Games that Khris Davis has had .247 average at end of:
    2013: 0 in 56 (7 .247 opportunities)
    2014: 1 in 144 (124 opp.)
    2015: 6 in 121 (78 opp.)
    2016: 4 in 150 (152 opp.)
    2017: 4 in 153 (157 opp.)
    2018: 4 in 151 (164 opp.)
    2019 so far: 1 in 21 (3 opp.)

Two more homers for Yelich tonight, he has 13 now and they are up 2-0 in the 6th on the Dodgers. He has 13 HRs and 27 RBIs in 13 home games, no HRs and 2 RBIs in 9 road games.

Edit: I just assumed that was all in, but that doesn’t include tonight’s 2 HR

    Increased to .435/.532/1.326
