That's a ridiculously crazy challenge to make, and it's hard to make that challenge and not foul, but it's not a Pen and it's not a red card. So now Marriner sucks both ways and maybe I'll send a christmas card to the linesman I'm a big fan :)

It may be a blessing in disguise for you guys.  Obviously I think the league takes priority over another cup and you don't want to fall too many games behind the other teams.  I get that you're expected to win your 3 games in hand to overcome Chelsea but thats easier said than done.  When United was going for the treble in 07/08 I always felt they ran out of gas in the FA Cup because of playing too many games.

Wigan was a thorn in City's side for many years (two points from them during one three-season stretch, IIRC). Then it was Everton and Sunderland. Now it seems to be Wigan again.

One club it won't be for a long, long time is United. Because United is stupid.

But the words are so smart and pure.

City were not in any way robbed by the refs tonight, given that Barca had a pen not called and a goal wrongly disallowed, but the foul on Dzeko that led to Messi's goal is about as bad a foul call as you're going to see, and then missing the tackle by Pique from behind was also incredibly poor. I just don't understand how the referees in the CL can be so poor. Tonight's game was pretty awesome, but it was really marred by the performance of an official.

I don't have a lot of time for Neymar tonight, either, who fell over whenver he could and then found 5 of his buddies to surround the ref.

edit: Kompany was absolutely immense tonight. We're so lucky to have him.

It's amazing how quickly this season went downhill. Six weeks ago, City's on a 20-match unbeaten run, arguably playing some of the best football in the history of club. There was much chatter -- and it was crazy, sure -- about winning four trophies. Then they bowed out of two competitions in a week. And now today at Hull, we're 10 minutes into the match and already a man down.

I guess Pellegrini has to play Lescott now.

Kompany's red means he misses the derby.  I suppose City could appeal, but it was pretty clear cut so if they did they'd risk tacking on some games, with Arsenal and Liverpool to follow.

Huh, i never knew that.

But now I'm reading that since its his second red of the season it could be more than 1 game?  Who knows...

I didn't know that either, Zomp. Until today.

Silva was fucking immense today. Just a tremendous performance at both ends of the pitch.

This one wasn't pretty, it wasn't breathtaking, it wasn't 6-3 against Arsenal or 6-0 vs. Spurs. But fuck, if City manage to somehow eek out the title, this match may go down as the defining moment of the season.

I thought a straight red was an automatic three matches, but I guess since it wasn't for "violent conduct" he's only missing one.

Interestingly it seems very difficult to find the official Premier League suspension rules anywhere online. I searched for 10 minutes and couldn't find anything.

Should only be one match since it wasn't for violent conduct. Also his first red afaik. I'm stuck in Paris until June so I was happy to not have to hear English commentary on the card. Kompany was fouled first and Jelavic went down easily but there's no reason for Kompany to pull him there he's probably faster than Jelavic and could have chased him down

I do not understand why the defenders are so prone to mistakes this season. They are consistently putting on clown college efforts

I know it's not exactly an official source, but Football Manager 14 has the following Disciplinary Rules for the Premier League:

One match ban after five yellow cards received before the 1st of the January
Two match ban after ten yellow cards received before 14 of April
Three match ban after fifteen yellow cards
One match ban for first red card
Two match ban for second red card
Three match ban for third red card
etc.

That was really, really enjoyable.

Now we must go to Arsenal and put them to the sword.  The math favors City if we can beat one of Arsenal/Liverpool.  My biggest worry, right now, is that in this sport and league, when you think you've got it figured out, it always seems to buck the trend.  Taking care of United was important.  3 points from Arsenal/Pool would likely be sufficient, albeit with little room for error with matches at Goodison and Home to Soton remaining.

Got to hop over for the Fulham match, which was enjoyable.  Fucking cold and rainy, though.

I think you're dead on about the Arsenal/Liverpool math.  Looking at it from the Liverpool side, I'm looking at the Anfield match as a must-win if Liverpool are going to overcome the games in hand, and they still need City to drop a couple of points to get control of their destiny.  Arsenal away would seem to be the most likely match, despite the hand-wringing in the Arsenal thread.

City's Achilles heel, they are. In the league, they've taken 5 out of the last 18 points against them.

Fuck it. For me, the plain and pure inevitableness of Liverpool winning the whole God damn thing has been growing for weeks and was merely confirmed with the victory on Sunday. I was expecting a City slip-up at some point; I just figured it would be at Everton.

Anyway, I never got a chance to come in here last week and talk about something that will leave me as gutted as City possibly blowing the league: Micah Richards' departure. The dude made his debut for City one week after I started following the club. He was responsible for my first warm and fuzzy City memory (see below; I also can't forget the subsequent F-bomb on live television) and for a little while, was the unofficial leader of this crop of young English players City had stashed away (Michael Johnson, Ishmael Miller, Nedum Onuoha, Daniel Sturridge), a group of promising talent that I believed (probably rather foolishly) could lift the club from its rather blase, not-good-enough-for-the-top-half-of-the-table-but-not-bad-enough-to-be-relegated status. For a little while, Micah Richards represented hope, the promise of something slightly better. I can remember how thrilled I was when he made his debut for England and was openly discussed as the successor to Gary Neville.

Of course, City got that slightly better future (and then some). Richards didn't quite live up to his early promise, but was a solid contributor (particularly during the title-winning season from two years ago) before injuries and the ever-reliable consistency of Zabs made him obsolete. He will be missed.

Story of the fucking season. Lost Aguero for a third of the year, Kompany early while we hemorrhaged points, Nasri, Yaya and silva at different times. City have spent enough to have depth and thus are still in it, but this entire season has felt like I'm monitoring medical reports as much as the table
