Locking Up the Killer B's

If the Marlins trade Stanton, it's because of his contract, which is an albatross. And because of that, they are not going to get full value, unless they are eating a significant part of it somehow (which undermines the reason to do it in the first place). But as noted above, the new owners will want to maintain some credibility with the fans and probably not just go into full rebuild mode right off the bat, given the franchise's history. If that's the case, a package built around established, affordable "stars" like JBJ and X could be attractive to them. They might have to add other pieces, depending on whether Miami is putting any money in the deal, but it shouldn't have to be anything as big as Devers, Beni or even Groome - if it were, DD should just say no.

I think people need to recalibrate with regard to Groome. If he's a top 100 prospect this winter it won't be in the top 50.

My point in my last post is that a package of Groome, Chavis and Mata doesn't really have much value right now.

The only "affordable star" the Marlins' new ownership would be interested in talking Stanton on, is probably Chris Sale.

And even then the team would likely have to throw in Devers and then probably one more guy like X or JBJ.

No. Stanton is the guy that the new ownership group will be building their team around for years to come. He's not getting traded, and it's well past time to make peace with that fact.

Furthermore, Stanton's contract on its own looks no more crippling than Manny's was to the Red Sox. Once new ownership came in, that money was big but wasn't so awful as to preclude building playoff teams in five-of-seven years, and winning two World Series.

Groome was #20 on Keith Law's midseason list (just to pick one). He might drop some, based on injury and how little he pitched, but should rise again if he's healthy come spring. But if his perceived value has dropped some, this is especially not the time to trade him, since his ceiling is still so high.

Also in what world is JBJ a star? A 3 WAR player is def valuable but again, they already have yelich in CF, who is much more of a star than JBJ. After next seasons FA bonanza, I doubt that contract will be seen as much of an albatross. The Marlins are not gonna trade the likely reigning MVP for a package centered around our defense first CF and our light hitting SS.

We should all be ready for Mookie to be looking for a deal that looks like that one when he hits FA.

You are 100% correct. If we are going to be realistic about acquiring Stanton, it will start with Devers and the guys listed. I don't see it happening and don't really see a need for him. Unless we want to move him to 1b

#87 in BA's list. 43 in BP's. 39 on Fangraphs.

Law seems to be an outlier at the time and Groome did nothing to raise his stock in the interim.

Edit: In response to Dewey.

At this point, we're all just speculating with regard to Stanton and whether the Marlins might trade him. It's still a big IF - if I were the new owners, I would not. But others, including some writers with better industry connections than any of us, have suggested that they might want to get out from under his contract - a contract which might be more reasonable for the Red Sox than the Marlins (we don't know that much about the financing and resources of their new owners, and their willingness to spend, but we do know their revenues do not currently approach those of the Sox).

Now maybe all this speculation is a waste of time - or at least premature, until Nov/Dec.

The Red Sox don't have the trade capital or the financial ability to trade for Giancarlo Stanton. Not unless they want to bust whatever payroll plans they may have for the next 2-3 years.

IF the Marlins make him available, there are a whole lot of teams that will be in line to acquire him. The price will be astronomical. It's silly to even speculate about it. It's a pipedream within a pipedream.

But I suppose it wouldn't be SoSH if there wasn't a white whale/Holy Grail trade target that had to be brought up in every single thread even remotely about future roster construction.

What kind of deal do you think it would take to lock up mookie when he hits FA? I think we can look at Stantons deal and Canos deal as a starting point, no? He is going to be very expensive

A couple of things here. First off Xander had an ops north of 800 up until the point he got hit on the hand. He now sucks, but doesn't that seem likely to be because he got injured? I don't get the get rid of Xander crowd. It seems very likely he will be back to his old self next year. That old self might not be the superstar he was projected to be, but for the money he is being paid the Sox are getting a good deal. Secondly, why would the Sox trade prospects and take on a massive contract when they could sign JD Martinez for less years and far less money? JBJ would still need to be traded in that scenario, but it makes a lot more sense then trading for Stanton.

I think Stanton winning the MVP and possibly hitting 60+ hrs dramatically changes the optics of the trade for the marlins. There are teams who would offer better prospect packages than anything we could offer.

Isn't that an argument for him not being traded at all? His current optic value would have exceeded his actual value, and what the b Marlins would need in return would outstrip what teams would be willing to give up.

This entire discussion is an argument that Stanton will not be traded.

The new ownership group, for PR reasons, should not trade him for anything less than a massive haul. His contract is so onerous that he's only somewhat better than a breakeven proposition as things stand, so a team giving a massive haul is probably making itself worse over the term of the contract.

So basically, there isn't a price another team should offer that the Marlins should accept.

September numbers for the Killer B's:

Betts: .283/.358/.583/.942, 4 hr, 12 rbi
Bogaerts: .267/.365/.333/.699, 0 hr, 4 rbi
Bradley: .208/.255/.354/.609, 2 hr, 5 rbi
Benintendi: .271/.317/.424/.741, 1 hr, 12 rbi

A lot of... meh and bleh. Except Betts is getting hot, which is good.
