Can confirm from a Giants source that they were just told by Lester's camp that they are out of the running

so it may happen tonight

The cradle of the game.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why Jon doesn't let this go on for another 2 or 3 weeks. What's the impetus? As the SP supply goes down, his value only rises.

He's the first domino though. Scherzer isn't signing until Lester is off the table and Shields is Plan C for anyone in on Scherzer and Lester.

At some point Scherzer is going to want to sign and he might set the market lower than Lester wanted.

Jon Lester pulled the plug on the Giants before they made their final offer according to team source.

If the Sox believe that, they should give Lester whatever it takes and then go get Scherzer too. But I would be blown away if Scherzer's market ends up being lower than Lester's.

It's possible Scherzer could get bored or antsy, but we also have to recognize what he turned down knowing how much longer he'd have to wait to get into negotiations. I think he'd be willing to wait a bit longer--things are just hot because of the winter meetings and everyone's mingling.

Also, I've gotten some requests for information. This is not a new only thread. We're actually cool with discussion, speculation and humor. The problem is that that then spins off into a second and third riffing off the post and those usually get less and less funny and further and further afield. So we hold the line at times like this because of the snowball effect.

We're leaving not just news and tweets but also anything that has real discussion of the events and the prospects as to what might happen. But most of the posts right now are side conversation and goofing which is fine, but there's a place for it. Basically, we have three threads with different functions: news, analysis and speculation, and banter. So there should be a thread for everyone.

Yours,

The Management

If Lester really called the Giants himself, I think that's a classy thing to do. If one of his reps called, it's business. No downside, there, but even though it is a business the dating analogy doesn't seem like it's too far off. The humans representing teams put a lot into this ( it seems) and it is a nice gesture to at least call them to let them know. (Rather than just ignoring their phone calls and letting them see him in another uniform on opening day.)

Gonna' be a tough call to either the Cubs or Red Sox, though. Probably a short one.

With all these different sources and tweets; is there one media member that is most likely closer to "the source" that we should be looking at as truly relevant?

You have to wonder if the Cubs went with a 7th year and/or more dollars and Boston is unwilling to match, and he is having a hard time leaving that kind of money on the table.  My gut, which is about as accurate as twitter, is thinking this is what his hold up is

I read something earlier saying the Sox had offered 7 years but for less money.  Not sure if it was speculation or not.

For the record, that "Cherington told us Sox players been talking to/probably still talking to Lester to sign. One player told me "he gave everything he had" #wbz" tweet was recycled from earlier.

In saying no, Lester called SF GM Brian Sabean, Manager Bruce Bochy and catcher Buster Posey to thank them for their respect in the process.

Posted this in the wrong thread, so forgive me for reposting.  This was the Cubs writer that was so sure they had him earlier...

Put another way, how happy would he have been pitching in meaningless games with a bunch of youngsters?  Would that have put him in a better mindset vis-a-vis the Sox rather than trading him to a contender?  It's impossible to know, but assuming the trade is what's driven him away (if he's been driven away) seems like a pretty bold assumption.

I'm with you here.  Last time he pitched for a non-competitive team he spiraled into an umpire glaring five runs an outing looking washed up guy that seemed very unlikely to land inflation adjusted Barry Zito dollars.  I think going to Oakland was fine and isn't the big deciding factor here.  Hitting the free agent market he would have had the same conversations and the same temptations from Chicago where he has people he knows and trusts and an exciting challenge.  Now he is in line to get Mike Hampton money.

If we really wanted him at any sort of bargain level, we would have had to take the risk in the spring that the good sample was large enough to outweigh the preceding bad sample, and take a risk at over 4/70 (sure 5/110 sounds great right about now, but that was with a whole dominant healthy season less and a higher risk).  Otherwise we had to take our chances with the open market and live with the results.

Now unfortunately that seems to have come to a Johan Santana contract with the Cubs, but like Ellsbury last year I'm willing to leave the back end of that and wish him well.  And while the first couple years might make us wish we had him, the last few years of his Sabathia contract just don't seem to fit a team trying to allocate limited resources and get a fourth and fifth ring of the young century.

People within industry believe Lester price will fall within $155-$160M range.

6 years $26-27 MM/year is doable for the Sox and it just depends on whether they think the first 4 years of Lester will be close to that AAV.  6/130 was the reported initial offer.  This adds an extra $4-5 MM per year which is not a ludicrous overpay unless they thought 6/130 was already well above their calculated value.  I think it will be hard to walk away for the Sox brass if this is where they really are.

deep inside Guido territory
ESPN Baseball Tonight
--Down to 2 for Lester.
--Schilling: His decision is already made up.  This is when that conversation happens with your wife.  Ultimately, the family has to be happy.
--Boone: They've retooled their team and Lester is the next domino to fall.  But Cubs need them to be their ace.
--Bowden: Cubs have set themselves up with all the momentum to land Lester.  Thinks he's going to the Cubs and may be waiting for a physical to be done.
--Boone: I'm leaning towards Cubs and I think the decision has already been made.

ESPN's consensus is that Lester will go to the Cubs.
