There's about 5 minutes to go in the next-to-last matches for Atletico, Barca, and Real.

Atletico 1-1 Malaga
Elche 0-0 Barca
Celta Vigo 2-0 Real

If Atletico can win or Barca lose, it's all over, Atletico are champs.  If Barca at least match Atletico's result, it goes to next week's matchup for the title.  Real are doomed, as it stands.

I've probably watched less La Liga this year than the last 5 years, but this finish is incredible. Looking forward to next week's Barca-Atléti showdown.

Adrian with a curling shot, SPECTACULAR save by the Malaga keeper in extra time.

Malaga hold on for the point that guarantees their spot in the league next season.  Atletico will have to go to Camp Nou and get a result to win the title.

Unbelievable that, with it all to play for, the title contenders can only muster 2 draws and a loss.

Real is out, Barca need a win against Atletico next week, Atletico need a win or draw.

On top of two draws and a loss last weekend, and a Real draw in midweek.  It's a choke-off.

Someone compared the 4-3 Barca-Real game at the Bernabeu to watching Liverpool play Liverpool.   This is like watching a title race between Liverpool, Liverpool and Liverpool.

Sorry dude.

Offtopic, but one of my earliest football memories is of ManUre losing at Anfield to hand the title to Leeds.  Scouse kids asked for autographs from United players (including a young Ryan Giggs) then ripped the autographs up in front of them and the Kop taunted the visiting Mancunians by singing "Have you ever seen United win the league?"

Since May 3rd, the 3 top teams played 7 league games, none of them against an opponent in the current top 7.

Combined, they earned 5 of 21 points.

This chokegasm might be a bright sign for the future of the league.  In reality, Real and Barca will probably go and blow eleventy billion on the shiniest toys, Atletico will sell, and then we get normal service resumed.

I've watched Adrian's shot no less than a dozen times. What a brilliant save. But if that shot had gone in...no, I won't do that to myself.

Atletico failed to take care of business against Levante and Malaga. At the same time, Barcelona and Real Madrid also failed to take care of business. So, in a sense, it's hard to be frustrated when all three times have faltered down the stretch.

Atletico has two games remaining, and both are finals. Win (or tie) against Barcelona, and we take La Liga. Win against Real Madrid, and we take the Champions League. It does not get better than this, though it is likely that I'll have a heart attack by the end of this month.

4283, how did you become an Atleti fan?

After I graduated college in 2006, I moved to Spain to teach English for a year. Upon arrival, I sought to select a team to root for. I bought Marca's "Guia Marca de la Liga", a great guide to each time's chances that year, as well as some information about each time's history, fans, and stadium.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan, I wanted a team with a rich history and a passionate fanbase. Importantly, I did not want to arrive in Spain and immediately latch onto either Real Madrid or Barcelona. To me, it would have been like someone from Spain living in the United States and choosing to support the Yankees -- an uninspired and a bit of a boring choice. At the same time, I wanted a team that would compete, a team that was not stuck in the middle or the bottom of the table each year (that eliminated teams like Getafe and Rayo Vallecano).

On top of those factors, my wife is from Asturias, which influenced the decision (my heart is with Real Oviedo, her family's team, but until they make it back to first, I'm with Atletico). Because of her family's political stance, I decided to stay away from teams from Catalunya, Galicia, and Pais Vasco (that took off Espanyol, Celta, Deportivo, Real Sociedad, and Athletic).

With all this information, I picked Atletico over Valencia. Everyone laughed at me. They mocked the choice, perhaps rightfully so. Up until last year, when Atletico beat Real Madrid, the team was a bit of a running joke in Spain -- they always faltered, never could beat their cross-town rivals, and broke their fans hearts each year. I was immediately hooked. I loved the passion.

I like Liverpool and I laughed.
