You're not missing anything. No one outside of Kyrie thinks that he'd get anything less than the absolute max if he was upfront about commitment, but he has held the view in the past that he needs to appear noncommittal in order to get the full amount at the negotiation table, that somehow if he told everyone he was staying the Celtics might open by asking him to take a discount or something. I'll edit with the quote if I find it.

You're not the target audience. This stuff is awesome.

Do you think it will be awesome when people are still talking about the same thing in May and June?

...yes? In May, there will additional information added to the equation in the form of the draft lottery. Some people eat that stuff up. Some people could care less. I’m in the former group.

100% this. The year-long handwringing about where guys will be playing the next season gets so tiresome. I feel like the NBA markets free agency/trades more than the play on the court sometimes.

Haha to his “it’s all very 5th grade” comment. Yeah, no shit, dude. Welcome to being in a workplace. Luckily for you, you won the genetic lottery and get paid millions of dollars to play a game.

I have always loved watching Kyrie, much like I loved watching Iverson and D Rose in their primes. Not sure Kyrie will ever be a guy you build a championship team around. And, yes, I know I am roughly the millionth person to say this.

I'm not particularly worried, yes there is a chance he leaves, but there always was. Saying that I plan to sign isn't a guarantee. I think the Celtics are best positioned to sign him unless the playoffs are a disaster, and getting AD probably improves that.

As a millennial that spends too much time on social media and loves the NBA; I would argue that I am exactly the target audience. I just find the whole constant scuttlebutt about player movement and off the court drama tiring and distracting.

We missed the bus. They missed the bus. When's the next bus.

Really would be terrible for the guy who lead us to... 4th place in the East to leave.

Yes, it would suck if he left.

Kyrie isn't the reason for the teams' underperformance through the first 51 games.

I'm sure we could list a half dozen other reasons for the 4th place start to the year

The great thing about the Celtics is if he does leave, they will still be a contender. I still think it’s all FUD driven by agendas with a mix of frustration at the season

This kinda shit would drive me crazy too:

    "
This tweet is the BS Ky was calling out.

“I spent the last 8 years trying to do what everybody else wanted me to do in terms of making my decisions & trying to validate through the media, through other personnel, managers, anybody in this business & I don’t owe anyone shit.”"

OK. But, during his career, what shit has he dealt with above and beyond the usual NBA rumor mill crap? I have not followed closely enough to know what differentiates the drama he deals with from the drama any NBA star deals with.

this thread really took a turn like the Gordon Hayward is signing here thread. Elation when Chris Haynes reported it, anger when Hayward didn't instantly confirm the news, then relief when Hayward posted his Players Tribune letter. Hoping for the same ending here.

My theory on what happened here(just guesswork on my part)

Kyrie has been angling for veteran help, and I think he's been agitating to move Jaylen and Rozier for it.

Ainge has been telling Kyrie that he needs those guys to make a run at AD when he comes available, hopefully this summer.

Lebron/Klutch blew up that timetable by putting this request out early, making it possible AD is gone before Boston can act.

Klutch folks also leaking Kyrie might leave, putting pressure on New Orleans to act now since Boston might not be willing to unload for AD this summer if Kyrie is gone.

Kyrie now getting bombarded with questions/rumors due to the guys who may have wrecked his plan to build a super team.

May be wishful thinking on my part, but I think a big part of Kyrie being frustrated recently is the young guys not taking to their new roles this season, and he wants them to either get on the bus or get bounced off of it.

This is true and I wonder if he's really the natural leader of this (or any) team. I think the best leaders tend to emerge organically, as opposed to being appointed (or self-anointed). I think the other players look on him as this sort of weird guy who has an other-worldly basketball talent. But I'm not sure they'd line up behind him to charge into battle. He seems like a guy who's susceptible to spouting off ill-considered comments, and even when he's trying to strike a pose of humility ("I never knew how hard Lebron had it"), it doesn't come off quite right.

It's no wonder that this team isn't jelling under Kyrie's leadership. He was given the opportunity and now he states that he might want to leave. Might be honest, but not a real inspirational quote to motivate your troops. At least we got three more quarters worth of basketball from KI than from IT. Wish they kept Rondo and traded Ainge.

Kyrie was clearly calling out Klutch for putting his name in their posturing. I really don't think any "reporting" got his comments even close to what he said yesterday. They just acted in the same way, like that Bleacher Report tweet, what he was saying was "F'd up."

Reading the takes from the neutrals on this is pretty informative. Danny and the Celtics are coldblooded killers who should not be trusted. Kyrie is a flaky weirdo who can't be trusted. Great combo.

Every NBA GM would have shipped out a broken Thomas for Kyrie. The Pels should really think about trading a prime asset for anything less than a guaranteed future superstar, like Tatum. Don't trade a dollar for two quarters and a couple of dimes.

I like how Pierce and Jalen Rose called out Davis Sr and Klutch/Lakers for their BS.

OK. I will now re-enter my "no following NBA rumors" cave and resume watching Kyrie play basketball. And I am very glad that RondoFan#1 is not running the Celtics.

    Janos makes way more sense.

    It's probably RR himself.

The Klutch team went at him hard in Cleveland to make Lebron look like the noble leader.

Yeah, I've softened on Kyrie since yesterday. What Klutch is doing/has done to him is shitty, and I can understand his being pissed off. Did he make the absolute best statement given his frustration? No, but he's Kyrie Irving: he's never going to say the right thing the first time, and even when he does, the media will twist it out of context, because they want to keep that sweet, sweet LeBron access.

Yeah seems pretty simple to me. He said he would re-sign here, wants to focus on basketball, and here are a bunch of people putting stuff out there for their own agenda in February. Like people asking David Price about his opt out all the time.
