Neither were, Pedey was transferred to the 60 day and Renda was added.
The options thing is really the key, it's likely he'll be going back down in 3 days.

There's a second baseman you've left of your list of options. One who's under team control through 2021. Sure, he's on the DL at the moment but they can't exact move forward with a free agent signing aimed at replacing him without knowing his status.
Fair point, of course.

The way I see it, 2019 is another GFIN year, and the Sox should go into it with a more capable full-time second baseman than they did this season. Nunez isn't that guy. I'd be happy with a 1/$10 or 2/$14 deal for Kinsler, but I'd pass on all the other short-term options (Cabrera, Forsythe, Walker) and the long-term ones (Dozier, LeMahieu) block any potential for a Pedroia return whatsoever.

I'm with those who begrudgingly think Pedroia's done. But if he miraculously comes back and plays at a high-level, it seems easier to me to move Betts back to the outfield than trade off a 2B we've acquired to replace him.

Besides, if it's true that Mookie takes infield practice multiple times a week, then it's something he clearly wants to do. Wouldn't it be a good thing to make him happy?

Walker's 2018 Expected Outcome stats indicate better quality of and amount of contact than Pedroia demonstrated in 2017 or Kinsler has shown since Dombrowski first acquired him. With the ability to also play first and third base and likely to sign for short term and small dollars, Walker would be a significant upgrade over the likes of Nunez.

I'm not asking about in the off-season. I'm asking about... Today. Where you would be replacing the best defensive RF in the game with Pearce or JD.
Not over Kinsler no way. But over Nunez or Holt? It actually isn’t that obvious. Mookie has been worth about .7 wins defensively and Nunez and Holt maybe .1 to .2. Even if you assume only replacement level defense from Pearce as your RF or from JD if Pearce is your DH, it doesn’t take too much of an upgrade at the plate to make the difference. But in the end, yeah, not enough of an upgrade to warrant upsetting the apple cart.
