Does anybody have a clue why Boston would do this?

He's clearly going to UPenn and is the son of the NY Mets COO.
Why would the Padres draft Manziel?

There are 40 rounds and you know going in you aren't signing all your draft picks. If your scouts think Wilpon has a chance to be something, why NOT draft him on the off chance he wants to play pro ball.

Jordan is a local (Calgary) kid. I've seen him play many times and have umpired his games. I'm on phone right now, but can provide a fuller scouting report later. Hope they sign him.
Ok, aside from the numbers that anyone can look up, here is what I can tell you about Jordan:
He looks like a catcher - has a very strong arm.  In little league he was an overpowering pitcher (every 12 year old who  can throw half decently is overpowering) and a shortstop. As soon as he went to play for the Okotoks baseball academy, he was converted into a catcher. He also has some great pop in his bat.
While playing Midget AAA ball (for 16-18 year olds), the collegiate summer team in the area was short of catchers and he filled in. He had barely turned 17. He not only was solid on defense, but held his own with the bat as well.  He played in the Canada Cup in 2011 and was named catcher of the tournament - effectively confirming he was the best catcher in Canada for his age.
People who know him, have played and/or coached him all say he has a great attitude. He was hoping to get drafted last year and was a bit disappointed that he didn't, but at the time he did say he'd forgo school if he was drafted, so that's a good sign. Apparently yesterday he echoed that again saying "he wants to become a member of the Red Sox org as fast as he can".  So I suspect he'll be easy to sign.

Some numbers:
As a freshman at Northeaster JUCO in Colorado he hit .300 with 4 HRs. As a soph, he hit .418 and led the nation with 15 homeruns and was a 1st team all american.  Last year he went to Northern Kentucky which is a Div 1 team, and added 10 HRs.  He's just turned 21 years old.

Oh... and his last name is spelled Procyshen. We may be talking about him for years so let's make sure we don't have half the board pulling a "B-U-C-K-H-O--L-T-Z" on him.

My writeup on him: http://rubensbaseball.blogspot.ca/2014/06/red-sox-draft-alberta-catcher.html

To take this to an unprecedented level of depth...which Little League did he come from, anyway?

I was fairly sure it was Cal South but I was at the Dawg Pound today, and talked to some of his former teammates who were adamant he came from Fish Creek LL.  Also... some more insider information - apparently he's been a lifelong Red Sox fan! Was spotted around town during xmas break wearing a hat with the Red B on it.

Yeah, meant to add that but I was in Belmont Stakes mode. The private school in Greenwich was a dead giveaway.
Bradley and my son, Max, were linemates for years in Pee Wee and Bantams. They also played together in the Junior Babe Ruth League as well.
