"Look, we want you here and we know you like it here but we're bad this year and going nowhere. We're going to trade you and give a playoff run and get some players in here to move forward with. Come back after the year and let's do this together."

Just makes so much sense.
Except when the Cubs outbid you.

Didn't they make a rule in some sport that you couldn't sign with a team that traded you until after a certain date? Or am I on psychedelic mushrooms again?

Grabner has had 2 hernia surgeries in the last year, and decided that he wants to look like the Incredible Hulk. Not sure if he will ever be speedy again, or pass his next urine test...

I think you're thinking of the NBA. There was a stretch there where guys were getting traded as nothing by salary ballast, cut by the new team and then resigning with their old team. There was a rule put in place to prohibit that.

I'll have to look, but I thought the NHL had a rule against it. Tkachuk did this like 3 or 4 times with St. Louis and I thought they made some sort or rule with it. That was a few CBA's ago though so it could've changed.

That's exactly what I had in mind when I mentioned that.  It's probably impossible to find as it's not the most concise term but glad to know I was on the right track.

Patrick Sharp to Dallas for Trevor Daley and Ryan Garbutt.

Guess Oduya's moving on. Dallas is going to try and win every game 8-7 again, too.

Are you saying this because of cap space or because of the addition of Daley?

Again, an astonishingly good trade for Chicago. God dammit.
How do you figure that? Johns was their best D prospect and Sharp is a Top 6 forward and in return they got...a third line grinder and an offensive d-man who Stars fans seem happier than not to get off the team? Daley's season looks like a complete fluke based on increased power play time (6 PPG in 2015, representing 40% of his career total) and a career high in shooting percentage that seems pretty unlikely to be sustained. Looks like Chicago got caught in the salary cap vice here, and came out a big loser in this one.

Sharp's production dropped off a cliff this year and he may not be a top six guy any more, he'll be 34 in December, and Chicago was desperate to unload him and his bloated contract.  He was somewhat better in the playoffs, but after round one against Nashville he scored only twice, and one of those was a total fluke where Hedman and Bishop plowed into each other.

Given all that, to get two players who can actually contribute on their roster is pretty good.

True but the early rumors were that chi wanted a first, prospect and roster player for Sharp.
If they were really asking for that I'd say they came up significantly short.

There is still more to come with that Chicago team.  They have less than a $1 mil in cap space and Kruger still to sign.  He won't be THAT expensive, but he appears to be an important part of that team.  They now have 6D and 12 fowards signed and zero wiggle room.  They still need to move Bickell at the very least and probably Bickell and Versteeg, unless they do something more drastic.   Those moves would likely only be a band-aid as the only "relief" they get next year is Seabrook coming off the books and I don't believe they want to just let him walk without replacing him with a similarly quality D.

Their situation intrigues me a lot.  I'm curious to see what they decide to do.

Fair take. But it seems to me those two player who can contribute are redundant (even if they may be slightly better) than younger guys. And Daley isn't cheap. We surely don't know Bowman's options or his thinking, but wouldn't eating $2 million of Sharp's salary for the next two years have been a decent option, if available?  It would have cleared $3.9 million incap space. This trade cleared roughly $2 million, and they had to give up a D prospect many thought was ready for the NHL.

Maybe Bowman thinks all the defensemen he's traded away are no better than van Riemsdyk and Runblad -- at least not for a team coached by Quinneville -- and he's now got the defensive depth he needs.

It absolutely is intriguing because it's basically the complete opposite situation as the Bruins. I'd love having Kane and Toews in the Bruins, but having two guys taking up $20M in call space is crazy.

Franson. Right handed shot, younger, physical, would be a great addition. But if I understand everything correctly he's going to be pricey.

Blues rumored to be moving Shattenkirk next year. I would dangle quite a bit to get them to move him this year, if they can make the cap numbers work.

I'm not convinced they add anyone else soon but here's hoping the defense gets some reinforcements.

probably not the smartest move by Ryan O'Reilly

Less than two weeks after signing a seven year contract extension worth $52.5-million, Buffalo Sabres centre Ryan O’Reilly has been charged with impaired driving after a pickup truck collided with a Tim Hortons in Lucan, Ont.
OPP announced Monday that O’Reilly, 24, from Bluewater, Ont., had been charged with driving a motor vehicle while ability impaired (alcohol) and care or control over 80 mgs. He was also charged under the Highway Traffic Act with failing to remain at the scene.
According to Middlesex County OPP, a green Chevrolet pickup truck struck a commercial building on Richmond St. last Thursday morning (July 9) just after 4:00am. An employee of the Lucan Tim Hortons confirmed to AM980 that there had been a motor vehicle incident, but was unaware of the driver’s identity.
After the collision, police say a suspect drove the vehicle southbound on Saintsbury Line, before abandoning it and travelling by foot with another, unnamed, male occupant.

Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has signed unrestricted free agent defenseman Johnny Oduya to a two-year contract. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Couple of pre-arbitration #s are out:

Sens offer Chiasson $1m in arbitration, Chiasson asking for $2.475m
Caps offer Holtby $5.1m, Holtby asking... $8.1m

I'm going to be shocked if either of those are awarded to the players.  Holtby is asking for the 2nd most Goalie money in the league (8.5M Lundqvist), and Chiasson (11-15-26) is asking for Mika Zibanejad (20-26-46) money.
