Seems like Pitt's taking on the whole salary. If I'm Toronto and the plan to build it up from the ground again, I'd probably eat as much money as possible to maximize the return.

Chicago extended Anisimov for 5/$4.55 AAV. Extension kicks in after next season, but what in the world is going on there?
I'll bet pushing it a year helped make it palatable for Chicago, since Bickell and Versteeg will have $0 cap hits, then. EDIT: Bickell's got two years left.
Anisimov "solves" the second line center problem (Richards was a gamble that worked, Bolland never really fit, but it worked out, too.) Seeing how it worked with Richards, maybe even some small flashes (in practice?) with Vermette, gives Chicago confidence it'll work out with Anisimov. It also adds a Russian to the roster, and Artemi Panarin helps make a lot of numbers work if he's successful.
He plays solid "D," and they may have learned, from the loss a year ago to the Kings and this year's Cup, that depth at center is important.
A lot of small things, but maybe enough to add up to $4.5 million.

The Penguins are going to trade Sutter or Kunitz or Spaling - maybe more than one of them.

Phil Kessel scored 30 plus a season with Tyler Bozak as his center - he now gets Crosby or Malkin.  I think he'll be fine.  Plus he's not the face of the franchise in the biggest hockey market in the world now.  He's just another face in the crowd.  And the Pittsburgh media pumps the franchise's tires at every chance.

Yeah there is no doubt Kessel will light it up in Pitt.  This is not a good thing for the anti-Pens crowd.  They are just building a very top heavy team.  I would assume Phil plays with Malkin.  Yikes.

Downie's deal is 1 year, $1.75m - not bad if you're OK with employing a dirtbag.

Just got Rinaldo rage all over again
Downie is a lot better. Who's dirtier, him or Rinaldo?

Downie hasn't done anything dirty in quite a while, although if you factor in the entirety of their careers, he is.  Now he just racks up PIMs b/c he's dumb.

I'd be okay if they don't do anything today. There's no one out there that makes this team better.

Although, Michael Ryder is out there. PSK could always use a binky.

Good to know - maybe this is why the Bruins preferred Rinaldo! (hopefully not)

Depends on your definition of dirty. Rinaldo runs guys but it's more stupid hits than deliberate dirtiness. Downie's stuff, you watch what he does and there's clear intent.

Also, Warsofsky signs with Pitt, Condra about to sign with TBL, and Gorton named GM of the NYR with Sather stepping aside.

That's quite the number of moving parts there. I don't know nearly enough of those names to judge the winner here.

Gotta put the Haggs disclaimer on that one.

Remember when Hodgson for Kassian was a blockbuster trade of future superstars? Oops.

McKenzie confirms Kassian has been traded, but didn't say where he was going.

Strikes me as an odd fit in MTL.

Prust and a 5th?

God fucking dammit Bergevin

Well, I guess god dammit Benning. Why even move him for that package? He's signed for 1 year, $1.75m and an RFA after

I've got an awful feeling that he'll be coming here for like 4 years, $5m AAV or something stupid

I honestly don't see it. I'm not super worried about that one.

I'd be interested if the money wasn't crazy. He's only 27, and you can play him up or down the lineup. Unfortunately, the money will likely be crazy.

Full NTC though. I'm glad they didn't do it, but I wouldn't have ripped it if they had, either.

The mucky muck
Wings were desperate for a right handed shot on the blue line, but that's a ton of coin. Seems like Holland hasn't had a free agent signing work out since Rafalski.

Full NMC as well.  Seems a little steep to me.

Where are you guys hearing this Shattenkirk stuff? Sign me up.

Jeremy Rutherford, Blues beat writer.

Green was 3rd in p/60 amongst all D with 1000 minutes of 5x5 time. I think he's still got some value as a right shot PMD. Does need to be sheltered, but still has plenty to offer. I'd rather pay extra for a shorter term, like the Wings did.

I'm glad they didn't do it. They have Krug, who is a left handed version although not as dynamic of a skater, and if the hype from my friends in the Monarchs ticketing/marketing office is to be believed, Colin Miller is a stud in the mold of Green.

My guess is still Erhoff as a Bruins target. We will see.

If you can get him (Grabner) playing with 46 and Pasta, or with Loui, you might get something going.
