Really should have sent him to Providence.

$567k against the cap this year and $867k next, versus what would have amounted to $1.275m against the cap this year if he's in Providence (per Section 50.5(d)(i)(B)(6), league minimum + $375k is cap savings for demoted contracts).

Also, can't buy out Beleskey next summer, with Seidenberg already being bought out and Hayes on the books for '18-'19 the Bruins are at their max of 2 bought out contracts. Really worth it for a $708k cap savings this year, and $867k cap commitment next? Shortsighted at best IMO

I agree with PSK. Hayes is deadweight, but it seems really stupid to have a $867k cap hit next year when they could be done with him this year for only slightly more.

Why not buy out Beleskey? He's signed for longer at the larger cap hit, is more underperforming his contract, and would offer more immediate relief (although with a longer penalty).

6 years of Beleskey on the cap at these hits is not real palatable - I'd rather pay a 2nd to get Arizona to take him next summer or something:

What would the cap numbers be if Beleskey was bought out, compared to these for Hayes?

I admit, my instinct was to think "JACOBS IS CHEAP!!1!1" but I managed to catch myself.

Edit: PSK is wicked fast dude

I don't think buying out Belesky would have been palatable, as you note above. Even with paying him this year, and buying him out the next.

I don't disagree with sending him to Providence, but that doesn't seem to be the Bruins MO. I'm just happy he's off the team, and someone worth a damn can take his spot.

Banishing a vet to the minors is probably not a great look for other FAs considering Boston. Hayes wasn't a malcontent and as far as we know he was doing what was asked by the coaches. Being overpaid for your commensurate talent level isn't his fault. This is exactly why they have the buyout lever.

Not only does banishing him to Providence hurt him this year but it also hurts him next year when he is a FA. If I'm a mid-tier FA that would be something to consider.

I think I'd rather have drug his corpse around for a year and then been free of him.
They had way too many forwards to play any of the kids this year. They still do, really. I'm counting 11 F including RFAs, and that does not include JFK/Heinen/Bjork/Debrusk/Senyshyn. I'm ok with the buyout

They were in a weird spot with regards to roster makeup, so having to choose between keeping him and buying him out was choosing the lesser of two evils. Both options sucked and we can probably come up with a million reasons why either was the right choice.
