I wonder if they really preferred him to Quinn or they just didn't want to risk losing both/risk losing two weeks so they went ahead and pulled the trigger on choice 1a.

if they did, it's a smart move.  In this case, I'd rather get the defensive assistant of a head coach with a background on offense than the defensive assistant of a head coach with a background on defense.  The Cards defense was clearly Bowles, but who knows how much input Carroll has in the schemes Quinn is running in Seattle.  
 
Plus with all these openings, the teams that strike soonest are better off, because they can now start assembling the rest of the coaching staffs.

These moves by Woody seem to be his best yet as in they aren't totally reactionary or going for sizzle. I wonder how long it will last

When Bowles is eventually fired, does that mean the NY dailies will put "BOWLES MOVEMENT" on their back page?

Thankfully you weren't running the Patriots the day that defensive mind was replaced by some assistant of a head coach with a background on defense.
