Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and one of the N.F.L.’s most powerful figures, has escalated his feud with Commissioner Roger Goodell, threatening to sue the league and some fellow team owners over negotiations to extend Goodell’s contract, according to three people with direct knowledge of the situation.

Jones told the six owners on the league’s compensation committee last week that he had hired David Boies, the high-profile lawyer under fire in the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment case, according to the people, who declined to be speak publicly about internal league matters.

What exactly is Jones' endgame here? The article talks about Zeke and the anthem stuff, but really nothing else. Is he trying to get Goodell fired? Or to change his way on two things (one really small, the other potentially big)?

Now that's how you go nuclear on a Commish who suspends your most valuable asset.

Edit: but he may want to stay away from David Boies for a while. He may be working for Goodell at the same time.

So when he suspends the star of another team, he backs the commissioner and says he's doing a fine job, but when he suspends one of your star players, you go postal and want him fired.

So when it's one of his'n, that's all fine and dandy, but when it's one of your'n, that's a different story.

Hypocrisy indeed.

If I am reading it correctly (which is not easy) I think Jones wants to be a full, voting member of the compensation committee.

Yeah, all this does is make me wish Kraft had similarly gone nuclear over Deflategate (it's not quite apples to apples as Jones has the leverage of Goodell's contract negotations that Kraft didn't a few years ago).

Well, if nothing else we'll get to see the Deflategate "what if" play out.

You do realize Jones was echoing Kraft's words back at him.

I’ll happily watch this play out from afar; as long as the Patriots are not directly involved and Jones is leading the charge this seems like a win/win for most NFL fans.

So, so delish. Wonder which owner leaked this - Kraft? Mara?

Does anyone think this will end well for Jerry? It'll be fun to watch, at least.

It would've felt good if Kraft sued the NFL over Deflategate, but he would have lost badly and alienated himself in the process. I'm not saying fans should care about Kraft's reputation or court record, mind you, but does throwing a tantrum accomplish anything but temporarily gratify the owner's ego and bloodlust?

I'm glad this experiment in spurious, selfish (although I suppose everything these owners do with their toys is selfish) litigation is not being conducted by the Pats. I prefer this seat.

Right -- that seems to be what got Jerry's underoos in a bunch. It looks as though he forced himself on to the compensation committee as a non-voting member. According to the Times, last week, they got sick of him and booted him. One can imagine many reasons why. Perhaps they thought he was pursuing a vendetta-driven agenda based on the suspension of his star running back instead of making compensation decisions based on his fiduciary obligations to the rest of the owners and the committee. Perhaps they thought he was being a pain in the ass.

Either way, my guess is that a guy like Jerry doesn't take too well to being told that he's not permitted in a room he wants to be in. It sounds as though he wrote some kind of demand letter to the committee or the league probably based on some sort of by-law or something and one of the other owners leaked it. Interesting that Kraft is on the compensation committee that booted Jerry.

The endgame is to force Goodell to walk away from an extension with the owners’ acquiescence. That would be payback and establish Jurrah as the top dog, head of he Commission.

This is different from Deflategate. DFG was a disciplinary matter, squarely within Goodell’s purview, to which the owners agreed to abide by the Commissioner’s actions. This pertains to whether RG is extended and who has a say, on which RG has no voice. Purely an intra-owner dispute.

I hear what you're saying, but why would other owners care about this? Said differently, how does Jones' tactics serve his goal of pushing Goodell out?

In a vacuum, if the other owners could make Jurrah go away by offering up RG, they would probably do it. RG has taken lots of hits and may have reached his expiration date. Cross examination by our perhaps most resourceful lawyer is something to be avoided.

But there is no way they can reward this tactic by JJ, or his overweening ambition. Think he’s trouble now? Think about what he’d be like if they rolled over on this.

If things get contentious and sticky enough, it's easy to imagine owners who are not ardent fans of the Commish moving on to a "Let's get a new face in here" position even if they really don't support Jones.

Goodell is a stain...good riddance if Jerry is successful even if his own motives are nefarious.

I hope more owners step up and support Jerry. Goodell is awful and should be purged. Was shocked at how fast and easy his renewal was going to be. Feels weird to support Jerrah but I’m on his side in this one. Goodell has tarnished The Shield way more than any kneeler ever could.

Goodell obviously sucks and I do hope he's not renewed, but do we really have any faith that whoever the owners replace him with will be any better? There was a rumor posted in the other thread that Jerry likes Bill Polian for the job...obviously that's not happening but if that's even along the lines of what they're thinking I have very little faith the next commissioner will be any better. I mean, the owners have largely been supportive of Goodell up until now, and even this dispute is mostly an intra-owner tussle over who is included in the "inner circle."
