Now that we've seen him live for a few months, where do we stand on the contract? The one he signed or the rumored asking for Boras.

I don't know why anyone would want him at 5/200. Was that even rumored? 40 million a year? That's like, almost double what he got.

This is like asking if you would give him 156 million for 3 years (2020-2022) if he would drop the opt outs.

I just know the numbers rumored were in the range of 200. I have no idea of the years Boras was thinking it would be. So the poll is a bit one sided. I'll adjust it to see what folks would pay over 5 to get out of the opt outs.

If he opts out they can still make him the best offer if they want to, still probably wouldn't take as much as the difference between his deal and any of those other choices.

My choice isn't an option. It's what it was reported before the ankle injury delayed it and changed the terms: 5/$110 with the first opt-out after year 3.

I voted for option 1, but I bet there's some middle ground.

Now that he's thriving here, healthy, and seems to be having fun, Dombrowski might be able to offer him a restructure that eliminates his first two opt outs, say, while also adding additional guaranteed money from the team and increasing the total value of the deal. I'm not sure where the breakeven point would be, but a) I bet there's a deal both JDM and DD would find advantageous, and b) we fans would learn a lot about how the industry values opt outs.

Not that I want to rehash this whole thing, but I think the contract that he actually signed is really 2/50, with 60 million of injury or massive decline protection. I am happier with that contract than with any of the alternatives that are proposed in the poll.

If $200 million is really what it would have taken then the Sox in my view did great. What I would have preferred to see is that they tacked something substantial on to that $60 million to capture the potential upside instead of taking $60 million in potential downside. So, if he could have been signed for something like 6/150, that's what I would have liked. But maybe that was never going to happen.

So it's sad that the most current thread about JD Martinez is this one about his contract. Since the last time it was touched, JDM has put on three weeks' worth of exceptional hitting, for power and average. Moreover, he has had a remarkably synergistic relationship with our beloved young Mookie and is a bonafide MVP candidate (non-Trout/Mookie division). Everything the Red Sox could've hoped for and more.

I'm curious about what it might take for the Sox to extend JDM, and when might be the right time to strike. He's performing well now, the team is winning -- might this not be the moment to see if he'd be interested if the Sox were willing to guarantee the rest of his contract now? And, for that matter, would they be?

Maybe this off season, they can ask about tearing up one of the opt outs in exchange for some extra guaranteed money, or some sort of extension with an opt-out deferral from year 3 to year 6 or whatever. But I don’t see it happening this season. It would be pretty unprecedented to renegotiate a new contract in the middle of the season after it was signed.

The contract is already guaranteed by the team and Martinez has opt outs. What are you proposing?

the guy is amazing, but i think 2 years from now we will have some serious questions about our roster anyway. Is he worth more than Sale/pitching? Enjoy it while it lasts, he has been one hell of a player

Get rid of the clause getting the Sox off the hook in case of in case of a Lisfranc injury in return for JDM promising not to use the opt-out. Probably throwing in a few more bucks could guarantee the full five years.

Coming into today the 1st place in a fairly tight division Arizona Diamondbacks have gotten a .171/.246/.267 batting line with 5 homers on the season out of their right fielders.

I'd be trolling the owner/GM with a text or 2 if I was Boras.

I would doubt people in baseball would actually do that.

Also JD reminds me of a subdued Manny. The patience, the meticulous attention to his swing. The off field power.
