Source: Jason Varitek has signed a new 2-year contract to remain with the Red Sox. More hands on with players, less of a front office role.

I'd like to see him get his feet wet actually managing players, even before he assumes a bench coach role.

Exactly. Maybe some coaching staff in the Minors for a year or so before even thinking about a managers position anywhere.

Thats nice and all but if you are Varitek why would you do this? Ausmus didn't have to do this. Matheny didn't have to do this. Neither did Craig Council. Walt Weiss basicallly followed the same path as Varitek to become manager in Colorado. Alex Cora is coming straight from ESPN to interview for the job in Arizona. The days of guys "earning their stripes" while riding the bus in the minors seem to be gone.

Unlike the others cited, Tek spent most of his MLB time playing. He didn't
have hours on the bench watching.

Th th thats a joke son.

I don't use the 'Boston is different' card very often, but I'm going to here. The Red Sox managing job is no place for someone with zero managerial experience, no matter how promising they may be.

Are folks here really willing to risk a few years of the primes of the young core of this team hoping that Jason Varitek is a championship-caliber manager? If DD is going a to dismiss John Farrell, he damn well better be bringing in the next Tito.

First paragraph, the fans may be "nicer" or more forgiving in St. Louis, but I don't think their ownership is. They went straight to Mike Matheny with him managing zero games except little league! Second paragraph, we finished last two straight years under Farrell. We didn't like it but I don't think thousands of dead bodies were found under the Tobin Bridge.

Watching Tito manage flawlessly makes me want a different manager more, and if it's one of the 2004 "25", all the better.

I was going to say paving the way to the bench coach spot when Lovullo inevitably ends up in Arizona.
With Varitek already in the fold for a coaching/advisory role, I think this is a good opportunity to hire someone outside to have more young coaching/future manager talent around.

I really hope DD jumps on offering Alex Cora the bench coach position once Lovullo is inevitably hired in Arizona. I wanted him to be bench coach in the offseason they fired Valentine, before Farrell was hired. Hazen and I clearly are on the same page if Cora is on the short list for the D-Backs job. I can only hope that other front office execs in Boston share the same affinity for Cora and scoop him up in the coming weeks. He will be a manager very soon and a great one.
