After 14 seasons and stints with the Senators, Rangers, Blues, and Bruins, Wade Redden has officially retired.

RMPS' hockey boners will fly at half staff for the rest of the week in mourning.

I'm not sure what the problem is in Winnipeg but I'm pretty sure it's not the coach. They were a weak Eastern Conference team who's made no impact personnel moves but they moved to a tougher conference.

A goalie would be nice for one.

That is awesome. Especially because it's Steve Ott.

Yea, was I ever wrong about Pavelec, I was sure he was going to be an elite goalie. Not epically wrong, like when I called Theo an idiot because he already had 2 DH/corner bats and what the hell do we need this Ortiz guy for, but wrong nonetheless.

They could use a 1C also, somebody good enough that maybe Kane would stop being such a puck hog.

That's fantastic. Hockey players are the best.

Anyone know if Ott played along and left the faceoff and had someone else come in and take the draw? I'd have to reluctantly give him a pretty decent amount of credit for that.

He played along, but didn't leave the circle.

Honestly, getting thrown out of the face-off might have been Ott's idea in the first place, given the way he was talking to the kid before the puck drop. There's another video showing Ott and the kid chatting, then Ott tapping the kid's legs with his stick.

Such an awesome moment.

They really are, generally speaking. Especially when it comes to kids.

As for Ott, I've heard several teammates and former teammates rave about what a great guy he is. I mean above and beyond just saying something decent when asked so you're not just blatantly throwing the guy under the bus. Kind of surprising since he always seemed like a rat to me.

Edmonton is eating half of what's left on Dubnyk's $3.5m salary this year, and Hendricks is in the first year of a 4 year, $1.85m AAV deal.

Getting Scrivens for a 3rd is solid though.

Hendicks is an awesome character player that every guy in the league seems to love. He's a do anything for you to win kind of player, but he lacks high end skill. But, despite that, he's a shockingly good shootout player. I'm not surprised the EDM has added glue guys (who absolutely serve a useful role) like Gordon and Hendricks to pair with the more skilled kids.

He lacks low end skill too.  One of the worst corsi teams just added a terrible corsi player.  Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

They suck, they're really young and could use veteran leadership.

Exactly. I don't think it's any coincidence that they've added high character guys to help lead the kids. Other than Bryz, who is a unique situation, and the Perron trade (a great deal for Edmonton IMHO), the three of the biggest adds for Edmonton this year have been Gordon, Ference, and now Hendricks. All are high character/leadership/glue guys. The Oilers suck, there's a good chance they're going to finish last in the Western Conference and possibly NHL, and they probably want some mentors.

Dubnyk is a UFA at the end of the season, he was clearly not in their plans to keep him, and more expensive than Hendricks. You can even look at the trade like a salary dump but instead of having to carry three goalies they get a usable fourth liner who will stick up for their talent by fighting and help in the locker room.

Edit: Just saw that Edmonton is eating salary on this deal. Do not like.

Yea, the Bryz deal is still a head-scratcher to me. I could care less about the off-ice stuff and butting heads with the media, but the guy's body language on the ice is awful. He gives up a goal and gives himself whiplash looking for a teammate he can blame and stare down. Not really what you want around a young group.

Also picking Yakupov over Seth Jones is looking like a colossal screw-up. Especially considering Jones filled a glaring need for them.

We'll rewrite history then, so Yakupov (2012) and Jones (2013) are in the same draft year.

You're thinking of Ryan Murray, not Jones.

I was hoping I could edit that before somebody caught it. Big oops.

Kevin Klein.

Edit: Looks like a win/win to me. The Preds have too many right D's, the Rangers had too many left D. Now both teams are even and MDZ/Klein can fit in better in top 4 roles.

Klein is signed for this year and 4 more at $2.9m AAV
Del Zotto is making $2.55m AAV and is an RFA at the end of this season

Seems like a no-lose challenge trade, when Klein's right he brings a lot to the table. Sizable gamble for NYR on the duration of Klein's deal, but with MDZ's skill-set he's likely to get more than $2.9m AAV regardless of his performance.

Is something up with Del Zotto? Seems odd to give up on a 23 year old defenseman that has already had two seasons of over 35 points.  Admittedly, I know next to nothing about Klein as he plays in the mystical land known as SMASHVILLE.

His price is going to go up (although not as much because he's a RFA and not a UFA), and the NYR wanted to get a better-long term investment (for probably less $) for a roughly equivalent player.

Vigneault basically hated MDZ. MDZ was a healthy scratch for a while early in the season, the two never really seemed to get along.

San Jose extends Jumbo Joe and Patrick Marleau. 3 years each, Joe gets $6.75 million, Marleau $6.66 million.

I will make the Sturm Face at inappropriate times today in his honor.

On another note, this week's Three Stars were announced: Stars G Kari Lehtonen, Red Wings LW Gustav Nyquist, and Hurricanes D Andrej Sekera. Somewhere in Taranna, Don Cherry weeps.

Sturm's assist to Kessel and goal in Game 6 against Montreal in 2008 deserve way more credit than they get for helping re-build this franchise and garner excitement back in this team.
