Mr Messier,
Would you rather get hit by a Scott Stevens sized duck, or 100 duck sized Scott Stevens?

Because of poor ice conditions in the #Caps crease, the teams will switch sides half way through the first period.

…..

The circus was apparently in town and the ice was entirely remade there. The crease the Caps were to defend twice was supposedly extra poor ice. They decided to switch ends on the first whistle after the half mark of each period McPhee, Yzerman, Oates, and Cooper were all down on the ice discussing the situation seconds before the puck drop, a rare sight for sure.

Washington got a much needed win. Fehr had a couple of goals, including the game winner with under a minute to go. Grubauer also made an absolutely dynamite left-to-right sprawling save on Palat's potential third period equalizer.

Edit with the Grubauer save:

Went to the Hurricanes - Leafs game last night.  The Hurricanes had a fantastic practice playing an exhibition game against the Toronto ECHL team.  I heard that Phil kessel was on the ice but I'm pretty sure it was just a rumor.  The Leafs look totally and utterly lost out there.  The Hurricanes meanwhile have won 5 in a row.  All in all a good night.

Washington and Toronto basically just brawling tonight.

...there were two fights, and they didn't even occur concurrently. That's a brawl?

Neuvirth got the nod in net for the Caps and played really well despite not starting in well over a month. A late Joel Ward goal gave the Caps another much needed victory.

The Islanders have now won seven straight games on the road. They can tie the franchise record of 8 in a row, that was set by the 1980-81 dynasty team, in Florida tomorrow night.

Wow, that is a legit textbook slewfoot. It really is all about the name on the front of the sweater in Vancouver, typical Canuck douche move.

Anaheim creamed Vancouver 9-1 and they're now 20-0-2 at Honda Center. Vancouver went Vancouver in the third period when way behind and Anaheim had a 5 on 3 for 7 minutes at one point.

It was a 7 minute PP two days prior to last night's game (Monday). Both were 7 minute powerplays were thanks to Tom Sestito picking up a fighting major and an instigator without a partner. Sestito has picked up an incredible 49 PIMs in his past two games in under 9 minutes of ice time.

Anaheim was 6-11 on the powerplay and bumped their season PP numbers from 16.4% to 18.8% in one evening. Not bad 49 games into their season...

Seth Jones and Nashville come to town tonight. Nice reminder of last season and how the Flyers managed to even suck at sucking. Morin may pan out, but it would have been nice to have sucked a bit more and been able to draft Jones.

That's incredible. I may have to go watch that.

Tom Sestito's actually been pretty good for them in the games I've seen. Obviously he is what he is, but he's a big guy with decent wheels who can go when needed. I think I'd rather the Flyers kept him rather than Rinaldo.

Speaking of Sestito (no PIMs tonight, relegated to just 5 minutes of ice time) and the Canucks, they are seriously struggling to score right now. Their last four games: 1-0 loss to Phoenix tonight, 9-1 loss to Anaheim, 1-0 loss to the Kings, 2-1 win over St. Louis.

Since they put up a 6 spot on Boston on December 14, the Canucks have scored more than 3 goals just once in their last 14 games.

Wow. Just wow RT @DennisTFP Canucks Gillis: 'after winning game at Boston, we never got our emotions collectively together [for rest of yr]"
Dan Ryan ‏ @bruinshockeynow
Gillis said that after the #Bruins game, it seemed like the Canucks couldn't get up for the game. It took too much out of them emotionally.

So this is like 3 years in a row they're tanking after a regular season game against the Bruins? Awesome. 2011 is still so in their heads.

I don't know if I'd call that a "textbook" slewfoot...they're not usually delivered with a big kicking motion but rather a short quick push or hook.

But either way that sweater sure brings out the best in everyone.

Blackhawks over Ducks tonight, just Anaheim's 2nd loss in their past 20 games. At around the 48 to 50 game mark, Anaheim, Chicago, and Pittsburgh are looking like the teams to beat.

If the season ended today, the playoff matchups across the NHL would be awesome. Current match ups:

East: Penguins-Capitals, Bruins-Leafs, Flyers-Rangers, Canadiens-Lightning
West: Ducks-Wild, Blackhawks-Canucks, Blues-Avalanche, Sharks-Kings

Horseshit call in Det… Complete horseshit… Puck bounced off netting (above the glass) and hit the back of JQ and into the net and they called it a good goal and its not reviewable….

I want to make sure I'm reading the boxscore right, but did everyone involved in that brawl get thrown out? 10 of the 40 players gone like that? What started this?

Calgary put out a goon squad on the opening faceoff so Tortorella did the same

Hartley submits his starting lineup first as visitor. Had a "heavy" quintet listed. Torts more than happy to match.

Torts totally hamming it up for cameras by taunting and throwing F-bombs at Hartley. Hartley ignoring him.

I'm unsure why Hartley did this, but it was nice to see Sestito and Bieksa get the shit beaten out of them.

Burroughs wearing a full mask yapping on the bench.

Go Flames!

Oh, I have no doubt that Hartley and Tortorella would actually do that, but for the refs to put a full quarter of the players in the locker room 2 seconds in seems unusual.

No choice, secondary fights are all automatic game misconducts. Westgarth and whoever he fought clearly started before the rest.

So, what touched this off? I know the Tortarella/De Boer thing last year had a prior game's history to work with, Dallas/Boston II had Dallas/Boston I, even the famous Sens/Flyers brawl had Martin Havlat playing Dr. Hook McCracken.

That was Kellan Lain's NHL debut.  All 2 seconds of it before he got thrown out.  He even had his parents flown in.

I didn't know Torts would make the Nucks more loathesome. Tough sure, but he's got the last change then whines at Hartley.

McGrattan and co wouldn't tee off on the Sedins/ball hockey tough guy.

I feel like Tortorella is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't here. If McGrattan goes full John-Scott-on-Kessel to a Sedin, people call him an idiot for making his talent vulnerable. If he puts out tough guys, he's an idiot for inciting a brawl. (I've never been a Torts fan either.)

That said, he's an idiot for the intermission shenanigans. It will be interesting to see how the NHL handles that.

Yeah that's true. It's more the mid-brawl foot-stomping and intermission tough guy act that rub me the wrong way. Tortorella leaning over the bench with a caged-up Alex Burrows yelling over his shoulder at another team doesn't exactly reek of courage.

edit: Not to mention Kesler coming over to chew out noted tough Jiri Hudler

Either put your tough guys out, accept the invitation, and get on with the game, or put your skill guys out and, if they get jumped, you have a reason to moan about it.

I get being mad about being forced into a line brawl to start the game, but I don't think it warrants going outside the visiting locker room  and starting a ruckus. Are we expecting a suspension? A hefty fine?

I'm guessing a suspension. Wouldn't be surprised with multiple games, either.
