Good chances at both ends to close out OT.

DET- Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Nyquist?
TOR- JVR, Kessel, Lupul?

It wouldn't work for a lot of combinations, but both teams wearing colors here looks great.

Shootout time.

I like the retro brown goalie pads, too.

Another successful Winter Classic. One thing the NHL gets right.
My fear is they over do it. 5 more outdoor games this year is a lot. They're going to have to get creative with teams and venues or else it will go stale.

I still think USA has to go with Miller as number one.

I think he's the odds on favorite to get the nod. If they struggle in the first game or two, Quick would probably be in there by the time they faced Canada.

Many/most had games all over the country yesterday and tomorrow... Kesler is even playing later today.

Not a huge shock that they're going with either a grittier Callahan or faster Wheeler in a bottom 6 role over Ryan, especially on big ice.

Red-eye/morning flights and making the Classic the only game on the schedule would help that. On some level they know this, since they don't stick a kid with a Kessel or Howard sweater on the ice.

And shots of Bobby Ryan and Keith Yandle as spots are filled and their names aren't called.

Okay 3 things

First of all, last night the Islanders fans chanted DEEP DISH SUCKS at the Blackhawks.

Secondly they chanted USA USA USA after Okposo scored (him having been snubbed from Team USA)

Finally, Andy Greene scored to tie NJ 1-1 with the Blackhawks, continuing Team USA snub week

Tim Thomas' Bunker
Hawks make it 3-1 with goals from Kane and Sharp. Kane's goal went off Zidlicky's skate. Sharp's goal was a great pass from Seabrook and converted from an odd angle. He has 24 now.

Smarky crowd, that's awesome.

Sharp with another hat trick. Had to tie myself to the chair and throw my keys in the toilet to keep from taking that drive down the shore to Clarkie's house.

I'm thinking just tell him Brian Burke says he can't even spell intense then sit back and watch the fireworks.

Is Ovechkin scoring 60 tainted at all if he finishes a -30?

I'd take the under on him scoring 60 at this point. I'm guessing low 50s right now. I would also guess he finishes better than -30, but I don't know by how much.

The Caps are struggling lately and luck isn't helping either. They can't buy a win right now. Their seven most recent games in a nutshell:
  • Out shot Minnesota 30-11 and still managed to lose 5-3. Despite a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard and 11-1 shot lead after one, a couple of delay of game penalties and a 5-on-3 sunk them. Ryan Suter notched his first career hat trick. The Wild scored 3 PPGs on 3 total power play shots.
  • Out shot Carolina 41-33, lost 4-3 in OT. Jeff Skinner had a hat trick.
  • Played a tight game with Ottawa, lost 2-1 plus a last minute empty netter.
  • Out shot Buffalo 50-17, lost 2-1 in the shootout. Ryan Miller made a career-high 49 saves.
  • Caps gritted out a 3-2 win over the Rangers.
  • Caps blew a 2-0 first period lead giving up the tying goal with under half a minute remaining in the second period, and then the game-winning goal with just over 5 minutes left in the game. With three minutes left, Ovechkin beat Hiller with a wicked shot that rung the crossbar as a potential game-tying goal. It had to be reviewed and was correctly deemed no goal. The Caps lost to the Ducks 3-2.
  • The Caps blew a 4-2 third period lead and lost 5-4 in OT to the Devils.

Thankfully the Metropolitan Division is terrible and the Caps remain tied in points with Philadelphia, only trailing Pittsburgh (by a whopping 15 points). At this point, I think finishing 2nd in the Metropolitan may almost be preferable to winning the division, at least in the first round. I think I may rather take my chances playing the Flyers/Rangers/Hurricanes/Devils rather than getting a wild card from the Atlantic like Detroit.

Could just as easily be Toronto or Ottawa though. Or even Montreal for that matter, they seem to be falling back to earth lately. From a Flyers standpoint I'd much rather finish 1st and face Montreal/Toronto/Ottawa than finish 2nd and get the Caps/Rangers/Canes/Devils, considering it also means you're getting home ice in the 2nd round if you advance.

Speaking of Montreal...

Last night the Flyers completed a 21 game stretch that saw them play 16 of 21 on the road, with a 3-2 OT win in Jersey. Sweet pass from Nik Grossmann to Brayden Schenn for the OT winner. This after Michael Ryder scored SH with Brodeur pulled to tie it, on a similarly sweet pass by Zidlicky. Ryane Clowe had about a million chances and still has no goals.

Kind of odd scheduling quirk, the Flyers have had 2 6-game roadies, and both times their first home game back is the 2nd of back-to-back games, and both times the opponent is Montreal.

Good night for the Canadian Olympic snubs, Giroux scored the tying goal in the 3rd and in Winnipeg MSL got the game winner and insurance goals.
