It's the Little Things: Pick Your Favorite Unsung Effort From SB 51

In a game like this, there are a million plays that will be long forgotten by 99.99999% of the population but I'd like to remember as many as possible. So, what is your favorite unsung play, effort, etc. from this game?

For me, I think it was Elandon Roberts who somehow chased down Freeman on that potentially back breaking swing pass. He got almost 40 yards but it looked to me like he had potential for more or even a TD without that tackle, as the blocking was set up nicely.

Interesting, because we noticed Hightower blasting him after that play -- we assumed he had blown the coverage on him which allowed the big play to begin with. Haven't seen it on TV yet, so not sure if that is actually what happened or not.

He did blow the play - got caught up in the middle and nobody covered Freeman. But the effort to track Freeman down was Watson-esque.

Bennett catching a tipped ball that an Atlanta guy was about to intercept, forget when exactly. Bennett sucked in run blocking in the 1st half but had some good catches and would have won the SB at the end if not for DPI.

Rowe had pretty good coverage tonight. I remember a 3rd down stop vs a guy, and he had great position on Jones, just an unreal catch by Jones.

Flowers got all the sack credit but I think Brown was also good up the middle.

Special teams on kickoffs were great. I'm not sure if Ghost's FG kicking has been fucked by pinning the kickoffs at the 5-10, but most of the time it's been worth the tradeoff (hope he fixes his shit in the offseason still)

Chris Long drawing a holding penalty that killed the Atlanta drive prior to the drive that led to the game tying TD and two point conversion; easy to say it, but his balls to the wall effort on that play caused the lineman to mug him to prevent him from getting to Ryan.

Brandon King on one and I think both of those final kick offs that pinned the Falcons around their 10 yard line was an insane wrecking crew.

patrick chung made an amazing catch over his shoulder on the trick punt return that could have gone horribly wrong

Amendola on the 4th down catch. Outside comeback route that looked easy, but that's game over if he flubs it.

The DBs. Yeah, Julio had a couple massive plays. But if you told me that he would be targeted 4 times all day, and would finish 4/87, I would have taken that in a heartbeat

When I first saw that throwaway in the 4th quarter 3:36 to go, I was waiting for the flag to drop for an intentional grounding foul occurred in end zone safety.

James White picking up the corner blitz allowing Brady to Hogan to convert 3rd and 10 from the shadow of the end zone on the tying TD drive. Cannon is late to recognize he has nobody to block and can't get over in time, White recognizes it in time by a split second and slows the corner up to buy Brady just enough time. Really would have been a worthy MVP.

I loved that the Pats didn't celebrate like idiots after the 28-3 TD or the 28-12 TD or the 28-18 two pointer. They always know the game situation.

It might not be little enough, but the fact that the Patriots converted not one but two two-point conversions is pretty amazing. The NFL-wide conversion rate is 50% and the Pats aren't really a short-field team.

I may have the wrong play, but Shaq Mason destroying the d-line to clear the way for White's TD run to bring them to within 2 in the last minute of regulation was impressive.

The 4th down catch by Amendola down 28-3. You didn't think it mattered at the time but it ended up being a huge play.

Also, not just one play but the sequence after the failed onside kick. ATL had 2nd and 1 from the Patriots 32 and then got called for holding and then Ryan was sacked on 3rd down from the 42. Huge sequence there to not let ATL even attempt a FG. Everyone remembers the failed possession after they got to the Patriots 22 later in the 4th but this one will go unnoticed by many in the recaps.

The playcall on the first two-point conversion. Just seemed really confident. I think that was the moment that the confidence surged from 0 to "well, maybe..."

Harmon making the tackle on the long pass where Butler fell down.

Yup and its the 2 point conversion that has been on film from the Patriots for the 12 years or so. Atlanta didn't even realize it was coming. Such dummies.

The refs for actually calling a holding in the waning minutes of the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl (and a DPI in OT). It was the right call both times but a lot of refs swallow their whistles there, especially on holding calls...

Quinn / Shanahan for not simply running the ball three times and kicking a FG after the Jones catch.

Not game action but I love how BB deflects questions about his own greatness and puts all the glory on his players.

I'll go with the Bennett catch on the tipped pass as well. I think that may have been picked if he doesn't grab it.

A bit off-topic but it is a 'little thing' that I was confused about. Near the end of the 3Q Atlanta let the play clock tick down to 0 before punting and were assessed a delay of game penalty with about 5 sec left on the game clock. The penalty was marked off and they lined up to punt again but the refs restarted the game clock and it ticked down to 0 - end of quarter. How is this correct? If that's the actual rule then what's prevent a team from taking multiple back-to-back-to-back penalties to wind down 40 sec of play clock for every 5 yds penalised? You could kill most of a quarter.

Or did I misinterpret what went on? (it was after 2am after all)

I believe there's something that can turn this into a 15 yard penalty if it's done over and over.

Second intentional delay of game penalty adds 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Here's my dumb rules questions--both teams get possession in OT (outside of TD obviously), but what happens if a team (and yes, I know that realistically this can't happen) drives down field, takes 14:59 of the OT and kicks a FG as clock hits 0:00?

It keeps going into a second quarter of overtime.

edit: it would be interesting to see that in the regular season. There have been playoff games that have gone into the second quarter of overtime, but a regular season game would usually end in a tie at that point.

The game is over if that fails. A totally underrated moment way before it felt like the team could come back. I think this is the "little thing" play that should win the award. Without it, there is nothing else.

Ok, but it still seems weird. I'd been under the impression that if your opponent has no time outs you can let close to 2 minutes run off the game clock by letting the play clock run down to almost 0 before taking a knee 3 times. But if you take a penalty for DoG and get a whole new 40 sec then you could extend this further? What if you take the penalty (40 sec), let it run down a further 39 sec, hike, kneel and then take another penalty (so they aren't back-to-back), etc.? You could kill over 4 minutes of game clock

Clock stops for good on a delay of game when there is 5 minutes or less left in the 4th quarter.

I don't disagree, but there are literally 30 such plays.

Looking at the rule book (rule 16) it seems it would be different in regular and post season:

Regular season
"There shall be a maximum of one 15-minute period, even if the second team has not had an opportunity to possess the ball or if its initial possession has not ended."

Post season
"If the score is tied at the end of a 15-minute overtime period, or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended, another overtime period will begin, and play will continue, regardless of how many 15-minute periods are necessary.

Not really. If they fail, the Falcons have the ball on the 50 with a few minutes left in the third quarter, up 25. The game is over.

There are obviously a lot of important plays after that. But without that conversion, the game is over.

This won't likely be forgotten, but the effort from Amendola on the tying two point conversion was unreal. He has had some sneaky clutch plays in his Patriots career.

Sneaky? If we compare his production in the regular season to what he has done in the playoffs for this team, you can very much argue he's the most clutch receiver in Patriots history.

A couple of items that stick out, of far too many to list. Personally, I'm not going to talk about Amendola's catch on 4th down, because that wasn't exactly a little/unsung thing, at least in my eyes; that was pretty damn huge.

First off, 3rd and 8 from the Atlanta 35, Pats are down 28-3 at this point, a touch under 5 minutes to go in the third. Brady like a madman rushes for 15 yards for the conversion, eventually leading to White's touchdown reception. This was no sure thing, and if it's not successful, that's likely 4th and long, which was certainly no sure thing with how the offense looked at that point deep in Atlanta territory, from the pick six to Blount's fumble.

Secondly, Gostkowski's last two kickoffs were goddamn money to ensure a long field, and in turn better field position, even if the first kickoff resulted in a 2:26, 45-yard drive, this is about Ghost's efforts specifically (to say nothing of Flowers sack on 2nd and 11 on the Pats 23). With the Pats down 8, after the Amendola TD catch and Weisian direct snap to the RB conversion, Gost's kickoff goes 62 yards to the 3, making it so Justin Hardy can't just knee on it for a touchback. Jonathan Jones brings him down and they start the drive at their 10. Then, after I was personally afraid too much time was left on the clock after tying the score, with 57 ticks left in regulation, following a Freeney offsides penalty, Ghost's kickoff goes exactly the requisite 60 yards, basically right at the plane of the goal. In other words, if Weems knees/free catches this, there's a possible chance they start at like the half yard line, thus opening up safety possibilities. Weems is thus forced to return the kickoff, only goes out to the 11 before Bolden gets the stop, as opposed to Ghost possibly booming it through the endzone and giving the Falcons a free 14 yards.

You beat me to it. Was thinking this morning just how clutch Ghost's kickoff was when we cut it to 28-20. It was absolutely perfect, kicked right to the goal line so that the Falcons had to return it but had no shot of getting much past the 10.

As bad as missing the extra point was, he nailed two crucial field goals and pinned the Falcons back when it was critical to do so.

Bennett saving the interception on the tipped pass in the second quarter, and getting the first down, which ultimately led to a FG.
