Is anyone else bothered by the idea of watching full-screen video with rounded corners and a big notch taken out of one side? Is there perhaps a slightly smaller fullscreen mode that lets you see a perfect rectangle?

I'm actually planning to go without a case for the first time. I've used very minimal cases just to add some grip and to protect against scratches. I'm paying for AppleCare+, so, in the unlikely event that I crack the front or back glass I can get it replaced for a minimal cost, but I'm hoping that the back glass should be less slippery and less prone to scratching.

Interesting, thanks. Yeah, I'll have to see how the grip/feel on the glass is when it gets delivered. And I also got AppleCare+ but I was a bit unsure whether the cheap $29 replacement charge applies to any crack in glass or just a crack in the screen only (i.e., not the back glass), since the coverage is labeled as "Screen Only Damage" and if you read the actual policy it says:

Seems vague enough that that could cover either the entire glass surface or just the screen itself if they were feeling stingy.

I'm not a fan of the glass overall. I broke my iPhone 6 a couple times without a case. I'm going to go back to this case:

I have it on my iPhone 6 and love it. Carries 3 cards (now 4 since i've been jamming cards in it) and no wallet to carry. Yeah, its a tad bulky (although still less than an otter box) but beats carrying a wallet.

Got my iPhone 8 today and all good. setup was simple, restore was simple and ready to roll. Took about 10 minutes.

First thoughts are is it's fast as hell, TouchID is so much faster than my 6 and the device gets hot. The back of the phone after doing all the updates was quite warm.

I am annoyed at app developers who never went to 64 bit though. I have 3 apps I use on a regular basis i need to find a replacement for.

My 8 plus was delivered today, unfortunately I’m in MA at a conference this weekend so won’t get my hands on it till Monday. My 6 plus is almost toast so happy for the upgrade.

Picked up a silver iPhone 8 at the Boylston Apple store. Had slight buyer's remorse when I saw the finish on the black 8, but the silver is pretty snazzy as well.

Unfortunately, it looks like Apple won't include damage to the back glass under the $29 AppleCare+ screen replacement. It will be $99. Still low enough that I'm willing to risk going without a case.

Yeah, the other way to approach it would just be go without a case unless/until it cracks and then, if the crack is not terrible, you could then get a case to cover up the crack without having to pay the $99 to replace the glass.

The above-average warmth is normal, don't worry about it. It could be warm for a few days as it indexes everything.

I bought the Apple Care Plus for my 7 last year and thought I paid $109 for it. Am I imagining that or did they increase it $40?

    I see it's $129 for the 8.

I can’t believe how much faster this is than my 6. I never thought of the 6 as slow but even common tasks like web browsing are so
    Much better.

This is really helpful, thank you! I was 99 percent of the way from upgrading my 6+ to a 8+ and this clinches it.

I also upgraded from the 6, and the 8 is much much faster. Especially opening closing apps and rendering web pages. The responsiveness of the device just feels so much better compared to my sluggish 6

It’s going to take awhile to get used to the new home button (we’ll new to me). Feels like the entire bottom of the phone moves, which of course it doesn’t.

The new home button freaked me out at first for the same reason. It’s not as bad when the phone is in a case, but it still is taking getting used to.

Upgraded from a 5S to 8+, and obviously the difference in performance is huge. Even more notable is the quality of the display, which is gorgeous.

In terms of speed, the fingerprint checker is probably the most noticeable upgrade. On the 5S I had to hold it down for a considerable amount of time, but with 8+, it reads it almost instantly.

The larger size of the phone is going to take some getting used to, but I’m sure I’ll adapt.

    I have two questions.

I am going to upgrade from my 6plus to the 8plus.
My 6plus was originally purchased from T-Mobile and now in use with ATT. It is now unlocked and is GSM

I am planning to spend half the year in U.S. then half the year in Mexico for the near future so I would like to get a GSM Iphone 8plus.

If I buy an unlocked Iphone 8plus from Apple will it be GSM or CDMA?

I am on ATT now but would like to keep the option open to go back to Verizon at some point.

So what Iphone 8plus version do I buy from Apple that will be GSM and CDMA and work on ATT or TMobile or Verizon?

A1905 and A1897 are not cdma compatible (Sprint, Verizon). I believe all of the models should work across all carriers LTE networks (as long as it is unlocked), but someone may correct me

Was gonna get the 7 Plus 128GB, but now I'm wondering if I should get the 8 Plus with 64GB. As of now, I'm dealing with a regular iPhone 6, 64GB that powers off multiple times a day. I still have 18GB available on my current phone. I wonder if the 128GB would be overkill. The difference in price isn't much at all monthly with Verizon. Is there that much of a difference between the 7 plus and the 8 Plus?

Any big issues? I usually hold off until x.0.1 in case something major has to get fixed.

Just the usual reports of widespread battery drain. Like 50% less life. Haven't tried it myself yet though.

Why did you point that out? It's now driving me nuts. I knew something was different with the keyboard but couldn't figure it out.

I can't get over how fast this thing is. It's almost distractingly fast. Like launching a WebEx from my calendar today, linked into the WebEx app and like 1 second later it was auto-calling me. That used to take 7-10 seconds on my 6. Pages just immediately render, TouchID is instant. It's fantastic.

Apparently due to indexing and other update related tasks that happen in the background. Per this article from Forbes, it should sort itself out relatively quickly.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/anthon...t-have-to-do-anything-to-fix-it/#49918c70431e

I updated on Sunday and I'm pleased with it so far. I have a 7 and have been noticing rapid battery drain but not as bad as what's been reported on the 6.

Haha, sorry man, it annoyed me immediately. I’d perfected typing quickly and the comma/period being on first page was just a need. Now it’s gone :(

It’s fast as shit and I’m sure the glitches will work out and I’ll adjust to the new features. I’m kind of wishing I hadn’t updated until a new version tho. I’m still noticing issues with switching between portrait and landscape on iMessage or even locked; the gif add on seems not to work the same and I’ve loved that feature since added; I’m not a big fan of locked message caps being so small. Lot of little stuff really, but part of the reason I updated so quick was I was having battery issues and thought it would help. It hasn’t yet, but I’m sure it’ll be fixed relatively quickly given their history of such things.

The iOS 11 iPad keyboard has its own problems. I had been using the beta for a while and my rate of typos has increased dramatically when using the on-screen keyboard. This new feature where you can reach the shift characters by swiping down on a key is terrible (for me at least).

You should be able to disable this. Settings > General > Accessibility > Keyboard > turn off "show lowercase keys"

iOS 11 question: when you hold a link to open in a new tab, it takes longer now. The link first gets a bubble-like appearance. It’s annoying for the extra seconds. What is the purpose of this bubble deal?

I wish there was a toggle for the new screenshot in iOS11. I used to just take a snapshot and paste it right into a text. Now I need to click a thumbnail, click copy, then paste. Annoying extra step for no reason.

Side note - I got AirBuds yesterday and I really like them. I thought they were just a wireless version of the standard earbuds, but they feel much better in my ears and they're very easy to use.

How's the battery life? Got a pair of LG Bluetooth headphones (the kind that rest on the back of your neck), and after 3+ years, they still give me 8-12 hours of music. Found myself disappointed with more expensive options that promise only 4 or so.

I have a pair of AirPods and the battery life is great (the case has a battery built in and it tops off the AirPods whenever they’re in the case). I don’t use them that much (maybe 1/2 an hour to an hour a day on average), but I’ve gone multiple weeks between charges. I like them but I have trouble keeping them in my ears. The regular wired iPhone EarPods are worthless to me because they simply won’t stay in my ears. The AirPods are better, but can come loose fairly easily.

I don't know yet, but the reports aren't great if you intend to use them all day. I think I read 5 hours of continuous usage per charge, so in-line with what you wrote.

I am sure these things are overpriced compared to other options that are out there. It's Apple after all. I was just surprised that they're seemingly more than just wireless earbuds.

I’d love to get AirPods but I’d lose them in like 3 days. I’m really struggling with no headphone jack since I’m on my phone hours a day in the car. I bought a splitter but forgot it at home today. It’s just so inconvenient. I’d love a second lightning port if were going this route.

I bought a wireless charging pad for my desk at work. It's been working out well. The only thing I keep forgetting is that I can't just plug my headphones into my work computer if I want to listen to audio from that. Six of one, half dozen of another.
