How important is it to catch Houston?

MLB Network was just saying they'll play the Rangers at their stadium, then flip later on in the year. Also will play Mets at CitiField and be the home team and use DH this weekend.

Thought Houston was going to play all games this week at the Tropicana Field. I know they cannot play at Citifield because of the U.S. Tennis Open.

Why not play the games in a major league park where, you know, fans have a tough time getting tickets for the team that plays there and would jump at the chance to see a ballgame? Especially if the profits were earmarked towards disaster relief or something like that. Not The Crappy Trop.

Yes, I know it couldn't be Fenway specifically, there is a concert or two there this weekend. But there's gotta be other places.

Plus Tampa guarantees no rain outs which is just something else good to not have to worry about going forward.

Astros will be able to return to Houston on Friday, and will be rewarded with a day off - the Mets series will now have a doubleheader on Saturday to compensate.

also they are kinda mailing it in against the Rangers, a much more desperate team... so with our sweep and Cleveland winning 7 in a row, here we go.we are 3.5 behind, and Cleveland is 3 behind. it is very possible Cleveland, gets the 1 and we get Houston in the ALDS, and anything inbetween.

Cleveland gets 7 games against a completely torn down Detroit team, with 4 this weekend including a doubleheader today. and of course the White Sox are in their division too. Astros get a shot in the arm with Verlander as well.

ah, life in the AL East...

Well, if Sox had actually competed against Baltimore this season, there wouldn't be a problem.

How much of a difference does it make now that they've added Verlander? Most of the baseball analysts think the Indians are the best team in The AL right now and I can't argue with that.Their pitching is healthier. I wonder how this addition may change things?

My thinking is right now the three division leaders are pretty neck and neck talent wise but, especially with the departures from Detroit, Cleveland easily has the worst competition.

Yup.

We have an awesome approach to these things. THE game thread post of last weekend -- the complaint "Showalter plays these games [against the RS] like the WS." (Baltimore entered last Sunday 1.5 games out of the second WC spot.)

I'd rather play Houston in the LDS since I think their pitching is weaker than the Indians and Yankees and our offense is the weakest part of our game. Let the Indians and Yankees beat each other up in the LDS. I think we have a better chance against either in a 7 game series. Dont worry much about whomever is the other WC in the play in game, although anything can happen. Not saying they should try for a WC spot but I wont be broken up if we end up as a WC player

Forget Houston or Cleveland. Right now the Sox are 81-61, up 4.5 games (4 in the loss column) over the Yankees with 20 to play (21 for NY).

If Boston goes 13-7 (getting to 94 wins), NY has to go 18-3 to tie.
If Boston goes just 11-9 (getting to 92 wins), NY has to go 16-5 to tie.

No head-to-head matchups left in the season. 11-9 versus their remaining schedule seems pretty realistic for Boston. It's going to be hard for NY to go 16-5, but of course it's possible. A nice 13-7 streak to end the season would be lovely.

Then you just play whomever you play in the playoffs. Gonna be really hard in either case.

As things stand right now, the Sox would finish the season with four against the Astros, then travel to Houston to start the divisional round. Given that most teams finish the regular season in their own division, I wonder how often something like this has happened in the past?

I'd like the Indians to get the #1 seed and face the Yankees.

It seems like the odds would favor the Yankees quite a bit in a one game playoff. They have a better chance of lining up Severino and having a rested pen since they are pretty well locked into a playoff spot, whereas the 2nd team will likely not clinch until the final weekend.

I think the Sox match up most favorably with the Astros by default unless the 2nd wild card team pulls off a big upset. I don't know if the Chris Sale vs. the Indians thing is real, but the Tribe is the last team I'd like to face regardless.

Bos 82-62
NY 78-66

18 games to play. If Boston goes 9-9 (getting to 91 wins), NY needs to go 13-5 to tie. Boston's schedule is favorable:

- 2 vs Oak (.441)
- 3 at TB (.490)
- 3 at Bal (.493) - but throw that out the window against Boston
- 3 at Cin (.431)
- 3 vs Tor (.465)
- 4 vs Hou (.601)

There's a lot of winnable games there.

Prediction at the moment:

1. Cle
2. Hou
3. Bos
4. NY
5. Min

NY will, of course, beat Minnesota in the WC game. That will never not be the case when those two teams play in the playoffs. Then it would be Boston-Houston and NYY-Cleveland. Two pretty entertaining series'.

Hmm NYY-Cleveland in the ALDS while the Sox play an AL West team...where have I seen that before? Oh right

That season worked out ok

Baseball Prospectus projected wins as of this morning:

CLE 99.8
HOU 97.4
BOS 91.5
NYY 88.9
MIN 83.9

LAA 81.4
TEX 80.9
TAM 80.1
KC 80.0
SEA 79.8
BAL 78.6

10-8 for the Sox feels right with the pesky Orioles on the schedule. Hopefully it also means they lock up the AL East in time to rest Sale and other key players on the final weekend.

In 2013, the Pirates ended the season with a 3 game set at Cincinnati, and then played at Cincinnati for the wild card play-in game.

Edit:
In 1991, the Twins ended the season going 1-2 at Toronto prior to beating them 4-3 in the ALCS.
