I figured I would post about another game I found recently. It's called Homer Hindsight - https://www.homerhindsight.com/ You are shown a clip of a swing, but the clip cuts off as the ball is taking flight. You then guess if it was a home run or not (green button for homer / red button for non-homer). The goal is to see how many you can guess correctly in a row (my personal high is 10 correct guesses in a row). As we all use the same grids when playing the Grid games, there is a collective fun in sharing our answers. But with Homer Hindsight, the videos are randomized, so everybody will be seeing different clips. I just figured I'd share this fun time-waster with you guys.

It turns out I am a very skeptical person. Literally every failure so far has been a false negative.

I also think I would be better at this if I was more conversant in the different ballparks.

I got one that was a leap-over-the-fence robbery which didn't seem super fair - even though I guessed it correctly! - but yeah, pretty fun.

Managed 11 in a row. That apparently makes me the Mookie Betts of guessing home runs.

It seemed like the first 10 or so i was given were all balls off the top of the fence bouncing over, or just hitting the top of the wall and falling short. Very hard to guess. Then I got a batch of like 12 that were really easy to tell and Mookie Betts'ed it.

0, then 4, then 1.

On the 4, no doubt a lot of people would have guessed wrong if they didn't know how deep it is to the right field side of center field in Fenway. 400 foot blast that didn't come very close to going out.

Got the first one I tried, then got fooled by Xander Bogaerts. It was one of those almost one handed golf shots that seemed higher than they were long and were usually a wall ball or just into the first row of the Monster seats so I figured no way it's out at Petco. Nope. Five rows deep.

Interesting game I feel like I'm going to waste an entire afternoon on.

Fun fact: After I posted this, I immediately started overcompensating and racked up a string of false positives.

Every time I get on any sort of a run, the site bonks. Like I click on a guess and then it just hangs. Or the video only shows a split second and I have to guess.

Got to 14.. and number 15 was caught at the top of the wall. Definitely got a lot better over the course of a day... shots to center are basically almost always short unless the pitch is over 95. The short porches are harder to guess. Shots to left field in fenway I almost always guessed homer. Really glad they don't also have an option for foul ball. Fun little game.

Yeah, it's why I stopped after my back to back epic, ground breaking, pace setting performances.

Too many lag outs.

First one I saw was Stanton hitting what looked like a line drive single the opposite field. But then I saw it was a home game. Home Run, obviously.

Just got one that hung up on a closeup of the pitcher (Merryweather for the Cubs). Just a loop of him standing on the mound staring in. Guessed that it was a HR. Video played and cut out before the batter could swing. Got it right. Wonder where it went out.

edit to add... The next one was a one-second loop of an Angels batter completing his swing and then crowd/dugout reaction. No pitch at all. Gonna guess HR. Got it right but the best part is that the Angels were in the field. The batter that was shown isn't the one who hit the home run, he was the outfielder who just missed catching it. Weird.

This would be way more fun without the glitching.

Just got burned three times in a row with HR balls robbed by the fielder. Off the bat they were homers. I call shenanigans

Slightly on topic, but there was a hilarious HR call by Sean McDonough back around 2000 (+/- 2 years) when Derek Lowe was transitioning to starter. Lowe threw a very slurvy something, and with the ball halfway to home McDonough goes, "Oh, no!" Sure enough, the batter cranks it over the monster. Would kill to see that clip.

Solved...can't find footage but know the details with some research:

Orsillo started in 2001. Lowe's only starts with the Red Sox prior to 2001 all came in 1998; he wouldn't start again until 2001. So that narrows down the year. His first 9 in 1997 all were with Seattle, so not those. From there, in his 1998 games, of the 5 home runs he gave up, only two came at home: The first was on May 23 vs. NYY, which was a Knoblauch slam to right center, so that's out.

That only leaves one date: June 23, 1998, against the Phillies. This matches the description, as the one homer was to left field, as the 40th of Scott Rolen's career. Then-future Red Sox Mark Portugal won that game. Tito's second-ever win at Fenway too.

Great research as usual. I just want to note that while Orsillo started with NESN in 2001, McDonough was still doing games through 2004. He usually did the OTA broadcasts on WSBK or WBZ while Orsillo was exclusively on the NESN-only broadcasts. Quick glance at game logs doesn't show any likely candidates in late 2001 or early 2002 (either not at Fenway, no HR allowed, or not on a Friday night which was usually McDonough's spot), so it well could still be that 1998 game.

One of which was a Joey Votto single to RF. Followed by a Devers blast to second deck in NY.
