So, um, kind of a weird start to the season.

They couldn't have played worse against Northwestern, nor better against USC.

I was hoping to call this thread For Chryst's Sake but is it possible Hogan is going to be a well above average NCAA QB for an entire season?

If you knew the answer to that question, I think you could make a lot of money wagering.  Coach Shaw seems to expect that level of performance from Hogan, based on his post-game comments, but I'm not sure it's realistic.

I fell asleep in a jetlagged heap on my couch on Saturday evening, woke up around midnight and watched the USC game on the DVR.  They looked so good, I almost couldn't believe it (especially given what has preceded that game).

I haven't seen any inkling of a report on the injury since Saturday (other than a local TV cameraman filming Hogan limping toward the bus/interview room in the Coliseum tunnel).  The local TV guys were speculating about meniscus damage (and then "high ankle sprain"), but I would rather give my $10 to DRS for that kind of analysis.

It's almost inconceivable that they lost to NU and then stomped into Compton and whipped the Trojans. I have no idea who this team really is, but I'd like to pretend it's the one that beat U$C.

And I am so happy that Williamson is no longer the kicker. Man.

Awesome.

The loss to NU looks less and less horrible each week. I'm still a Stanford fan and therefore skeptical but maybe they're not as bad as I thought.

Insane...

Also, Christian McCaffrey just broke Stanford's single-game rushing record... with 2 mins left in the 3rd quarter. 243 yards so far (along with 122 return yards)

Between getting five conference home games and having ND at home this year, Stanford has a reasonably straightforward schedule the rest of the way.  Their hardest games are Cal and Notre Dame, but they get both at home, as well as Oregon and Washington, the other dangerous North teams.  Their remaining road games are Wash State and Colorado.  Even winning 2/3 of the home games against Cal/Wash/Ore would give them a pretty good chance to be playing at Levi's for the conference title, most likely against Utah.

We're looking pretty good.

Though, I have my doubts about the quality of defense that we have faced thus far - Northwestern seems to be the only legit D we faced and we lost.

Defensive rankings (by total yardage allowed) of opposition, from here, don't think it includes today's games though:
Northwestern - 13
UCF - 85
USC - 41
Oregon State - 43
Arizona - 98
UCLA - 82

Our remaining games:
@Washington - 15
@Washingon St - 62
Colorado - 86
Oregon - 116
Cal - 83
ND - 51

This next game at Washington is huge.  If (big IF) we get through these two away games, I foresee us in a typical Big Game situation where Cal plays way way up and I'll be very nervous all week.  (Or we find a way to screw up against Oregon the week before and make it a moot point.)

I'm confused, because I looked this up a few days ago and thought we were @UW but clearly I'm watching this in Palo Alto.

I apparently lined up the @ signs wrong:

Washington
@WSU
@Colorado
Oregon
Cal
ND

Looking good on offense here early in the 1st...

I'm headed to the game today, so if you see someone nervously biting their fingernails and silently cursing Oregon, that's me!

So that was a drag.
I watched the game, pulling for Stanford, hate Oregon. What happened on the two botched snaps? Announcers said they swapped out the center for some reason on the first one, and they said something confusing on the second one. Where does Oregon continue to get all these track stars anyway?

Pure giveaways. Self inflicted wounds. Oh well. Could win out and go to a good bowl but the playoff fantasy is dead.

This is just what happens when you play a schedule with no cream puffs. 9 conferences games + ND + @Northwestern + a conference championship game is a tough slate to get through.

The playoff hopes are not entirely dead, but it's a real long shot. There are seven teams ahead of them for fourth place, but a lot of the top 10 still play each other and will pick up losses. Stanford beating ND would knock out 1, Ohio St beating Mich St and Iowa would get two more, Bama beating Florida in the SECCG a fourth, and the other three are from the Big 12 who are in the middle of a four-team royal rumble. Could a 2-loss Stanford get in over a 1-loss Big 12 champion?

Chances he makes it to 64? As a "legacy" player, scouts were all over him to begin with.

True sophomore, not draft eligible in 2016, will be available in 2017.

And yes, seems like a near-perfect Pats type of player.

Does Domer want to run our bet back? One of my groomsmen has a bet with an ND gal where if Stanford wins she buys a night of drinks and a hotel room; I am not interested in that kind of bet FWIW.

Ha! Actually, I missed the whole thing. I'm on vacation, the wifi is poor, and I was just sort of following along. Sounds like I missed a barn burner, for which I will gladly pay the $30 to Domer for his Irish covering the 3.5...
