I see that Velazquez was sent down to make room, but what is this move for? Is Hanley more banged up than I thought, so Moreland needs a better platoon partner?

Yup, this is the other shoe. You wouldn't think they'd bring up Travis to play twice a week.

Unless he comes up today, plays tomorrow vs the lefty pitcher, and is sent down for Brian Johnson

...unless DD wants to showcase him for a trade, because he feels that the farm is overstocked right now.
You joke, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him traded for Todd Frazier in the next couple of weeks. It would break my heart, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

I don't know. The Red Sox have no obvious 2018 first baseman. So far, the prospects he has traded away have been "blocked" in one way or another.

Well he is on fire. Can he play third base? (not serious)
He will not impress you with his glove work at 1B, so he'd fit right in with the butchering at 3B we've seen from the 2017 Sox.

Isn't Mitch Moreland an obvious candidate?

I mean, he's not that good but he's cheap and he's available, isn't he?

Red Sox plan to play Sam Travis at first base against left-handed pitchers. Hanley Ramirez isn't close to being physically ready to play first base, according to manager John Farrell.

Is he? He's crushing LHP, but that's it.
He's 12 for his last 28 (although it was mostly an 11/19 stretch over 4 games)--1 for 9 last 2.

In May however he's slashing .333/.389/.561 with 6/6 K/W...a big improvement from April's 18/7.

What is it with Hanley, his shoulder? So his shoulder hurts to throw occassionally during a game but he can use it to hit 460 ft bombs? Is Hanley milking this shoulder thing?

Yes that appears to be the case. Same shoulder soreness that affected him since the off-season.

So his shoulder hurts to throw occassionally during a game ...
There's no indication that the soreness is only related to throwing. Stretching, diving, reaching all could be affected.

... but he can use it to hit 460 ft bombs? Is Hanley milking this shoulder thing?
Farrell has said that what affects Hanley on defense doesn't carry over to offense.

Is Hanley milking this shoulder thing?
There is no evidence to support this leap to a conclusion

Also, Hanley was a poor first baseman in 2016, and there's no reason to think that he's gotten any better upon turning 33.

Our Present and Future DH is Hanley Ramirez, who should probably never play defense ever again in his major-league career.

Of course, that still makes Hanley the team's best 3B.

With Travis at 1b and Marrrero at 3b that would be a starting nine all of whom came thru Sox org, with only one (Hanley) who has been with any other org. Slot Devers in at 3b and it might become common place. I wonder how rare that is?

Which shoulder is the one that bothers Hanley?
I think it's both shoulders. His right one & the left one he hurt slamming into the wall (which if you remember has been surgically repaired before) And while I think Hanram can dog it at times, this has clearly been an issue for him.

Yeah, the left one historically has been problematic, but it seems like the right one is causing more problems in 2017.

Any shoulder issue that causes pain when the elbow goes above the shoulder (as it does throwing and diving) could keep Hanley off first but not affect his swing at all. So, Travis as Moreland's part-time platoonmate (nad RH pinch hitter) makes sense, at least short term.

Travis as Moreland's platoon mate reeks of panic and short-sightedness. It further cements my view that a lot of moves since Dombrowski took over have been spurred by Henry's desire to win the World Series one more time and then sell the team. Everything they've done has been to maximize the probability of winning in 2016-2018, with no concern for what might come after.

It's a strategy I generally have littl problem with. Worry about tomorrow, tomorrow. With the Sox resources, regardless of who owns them, they can always do a 2013 style bridge to competitiveness while restocking the farm in the future.

And with what Henry has done for the team and the city, who can begrudge him a final moment of glory even if it does set the new ownership back for a bit.

He's already produced more WAR than Pablo Sandoval!

(Though that was true before he ever appeared in a major league game.)

The kid can mash. That's never been an issue. He won't be a 30 HR threat, but he'll spray line drives all over the place and take enough walks. The big issue with him has always been the glove and there have been a couple of plays that he hasn't made that certainly weren't errors, but that I feel like Moreland wouldn't have had trouble with.

That said, I'm really excited that he's up and hitting the ground running, just like he did in ST.
