I don't get a chance to listen to them that often, but I don't mind their frat boy style. They could be better, but also much worse. I am afraid Zolak is going to eat Beatle alive.

Talked about this in the D+C thread, not really surprising... Given that show's only real strength is football, and with the football season ending, now would be the appropriate time to make a move. Makes sense that Bertrand would be given a more prominent role and will be able to hold his own in talking baseball and hockey with Zo (I can't comment on his basketball knowledge as I tune out on basketball talk). That should allow the pair to find some synergy before football starts up again.

It's about time the Patriots re-tooled that pre-game show.  Gresh and Tanguay are (were) unbelievably bad.   Should be an interesting final two weeks on the air.

I don't see Zo eating Beatle alive. I think Bertrand will be pretty strong in that role. Beatle is the most underrated radio guy in Boston.

Beetle is definitely underrated.  He's the only reason I occasionally tune into F&M, and his weekend show with Gasper is excellent.

I can't really stand Rich Keefe, however.  There's no way he's going to avoid being dragged into the Felger and Mazz shitstorm.

Definitely an upgrade, although I wonder if this is more about not wanting to loose Bertrand than it is about wanting to dump Gresh. That being said, Gresh seems to think he's a combination of John Hannah and Shecky Greene, so I certainly won't miss hearing him on the radio.

Im actually a big Keefe fan. I think he could actually be an improvement over Beetle w/ Felger and Mazz

Awesome all around. Smart move on their part, although it removes the only sane person on F&M. Interested to see how it affects the 2-6 show.

As someone who spends much of the day drive from clients to clients, I'm thrilled to see more Beetle. I've mostly given up on F&M and thought Beetle is the best thing that show had.

I'm not sure on the Beetle and Zo dynamic but we will see.

I've said here many times that Bertrand & Gasper was my favorite show on the station, sad to see that go.

Looks like Tanguay's done at the station as well.

Edit: I can't believe this but I've enjoyed GRESH!!! and Zo for the most part during football season, but other than those 18 weeks its not good.

The Rich Keefe Project, The Fantasy Football Show and Keefe as part of other shows has been solid IMO. When him and Adam Jones were on for T&R the last time, I felt they were both trying too hard and failed the auditions they may have felt they were on, but Keefe in his normal gigs I really like. If we can get some Keefer madness on F&M, even better.

Beetle was done on F&M one way or another. You can tell he kind of checked out when he didn't get the Adam Jones slot and generally stopped challenging those two. He was still good on F&M, but it seems he just gave up on bringing his best effort to the show, challenging them for saying stupid shit. If i was on the radio 4 hours a day, 5 days a week with them I'd give up too.

If Tanguay is gone, at least he goes out reading a Gronking to Remember. It's always best to go out on top, or with a football between your buttcheeks.

Agreed that Gresh and Tanguay for the post-game is awful. Of course I listen to it, because wtf else am I going to listen to on the drive home, but jeezus, they are bad. If I recall, after the Baltimore game, they were focusing on something completely idiotic, like, next year's draft. Idiots.

The Patriots Post-Game show on 98.5 is one of the worst things on the radio.

Gresh: GARY I TOLD YOU AHAOHAOIHGOAIFOIA
TANGUAY: I DIDN"T SAY THAT SHOSUFOISUFOISUF
CALLER: I"M IN THE PAHHHHHHHHHHKING LOT THE PATRIOTS RULE
CALLER 2: I"M IN THE PAHHHHHHHHKING LOT WHY DID THE PATRIOTS NOT WIN BY 40
CALLER 3: Hello? I'm 97 years old and can't work a phone
CALLER 4: SO WHY DID THE PATRIOTS DO X
GRESH: Actually the Patriots didn't do X, that's completely wrong, were you watching the game?
GARY: COming up next the post-game interviews! (these actually happened 20 minutes before gary said this and all the responses are on Twitter already)

On the way home from the game I actually listen to Butch Sterns more. Butch Sterns is one of the worst people in the media in the US, but it's better than the Kaspersky Patriots Post-Game Show.

I could see beetle hosting patriots pre and post game with Mike Flynn in the Gresh role.

Good for him, Beetle really is excellent.

And I will not miss Gresh's voice midday whatsoever. I always got the sense that he really overrated his own intelligence - every time he would make a 'point' there'd be a long, awkward pause, as if he were setting up something grand, and then what would actually spew out of his mouth was either something that's completely obvious or totally nonsensical.

Yup.

Tanguay out is the big news here. He's horrible and makes the pre and post game shows on the flagship station completely unlistenable.

but why would Flynn leave his CSNNE pre and post game gig for radio?  CSNNE better lock him up full time
Flynn is not always on pre and post game. He is usually in when either Troy Brown or Ty Law isn't there.

Flynn stutters and stammers too much and often doesn't draw the line on an opinion. I don't see him being a full time co-host. I'm torn on this move. I really look forward to this show during the football season. As everyone mentioned, the rest of the year, not so much. For all of Gresh's faults, he does do a good job of reigning in Zolak when needed.  I also love Beetle with F&M, but he absolutely deserves to carry his own show. It will be interesting to see how it works out and to see if EEI grabs Gresh for their mid-day show, which has to be one of the worst shows ever put together on either station. Not that it would be a huge grab, but I think it is an upgrade.

He also had his first child during this period (and just had twins a week or so ago), so there's probably another reason for him not being as engaged.

I barely ever hear Gresh and Zo anyway so this doesn't really matter much. The big news is Gary Tanguay off my radio during pre and post. Hallelujah!!

It looks like I am one of the few who liked Gresh.  He's entertaining and is a knowledgeable football guy.  Him and Zo had good chemistry and also had solid ratings over a big period of time.  Sorry to see him go, but Beetle and Zo could be good as well.

Stopping by to agree with the support of Keefe. He seems to have a solid handle on a lot of different issues, I think he can play the "Boston fan/sports geek/third chair" role quite well.

Also agree that it's time to give Beetle more to do. Gresh and Zo have football chemistry, but if the choice is between losing Gresh and losing Beetle, this is the right call.

I have never listened to the afternoon show. Is Zolak really any good? I think his radio color work on the games is bar-drunk, unlistenably awful.

Really pumped for Beetle. Good for him.

Can't get 98.5 over the airwaves here on the Cape so I've rarely listened to Gresh & Zo. Ditto for the Pats pre/post-game shows.

But I've never minded Gresh that much during his CSNNE work, and he's pretty good on football play breakdowns, so I won't join the pile-on over his departure. Hopefully he lands on his feet somewhere.

Don't know much about Keefe, but if Marshall Hook wasn't also tied up doing assignment editing for WHDH-TV, I'd love to see him in Beetle's chair full-time. He typically DESTROYS both F&M with superior logic, broader knowledge and well-reasoned takes -- when he's allowed to do so.

F+M think of Hook as some sort of dweeb to be mocked.  There's no way he'd be a good constant 3rd man.  I love Keefe, but he's super dry and sarcastic funny -- i don't know if there's a real broad appeal for that.  He makes me laugh a ton, though, tons of snide sarcastic comments on things other people have said.

Beetle hosts the pre and post game shows on Patriots.com with Paul Perillo & Andy Hart. It's much better than EEI or TSH.

I'm a big fan of Hook and would have loved to see him get Beetle's seat, he isn't afraid to push back when F&M get into their idiocy.
Beetle was good but had recently stopped pushing back as much as he used to. I have no idea how he will mesh with Zo who I'm not at all a fan of.

I never like it when people lose jobs and hopefully he will find something but outside of football Gresh just didn't bring much.
I do make an exception of not liking it when people lose a job for Tanguay however. He is awful and I hope he just goes away.

Not really on topic, but has anyone else noticed that if a SoSH poster, particularly in BBtL, posts an interesting stat or starts a unique discussion it occasionally seems to end up on 98.5 programming (I swear I've seen this happen with Felger and Mazz several times) that same day or the next day?

I've had a hunch for a while that Jimmy and/or Beetle reads this board frequently and sometimes cherry picks discussions for the show.

I mean, I'm not complaining and I could be dead wrong, but I've noticed this funny "coincidence" a few times. I think most recently there was a post that was made here about how the Pats have lost several of their playoff rematches and then just hours later it was a lengthy topic on F&M. Could be a coincidence, but it's happened a few times. I think, if true, it's actually pretty nice that they at least peek out into the community to try and get a pulse on what people are talking about. Do you think, say, D+C do that? Not a chance in hell.

Beetle reads the site. I reached out to him on twitter when he didn't get the night time gig and let him know most of SoSH was pulling for him and he responded and let me know he reads from time to time. How often? No idea.

Either way Awesome for Beetle since I've never been a Gresh fan. At the same time Fuck Minihane, Toucher is always saying how he never makes fun of radio guys losing their jobs because that could be him tomorrow and here is that smug asshole reportedly (I refuse to listen) openly teasing it with glee. What a fucking asshole.

Not that I want to be in the position of defending Minihane, because you're right he is an asshole, but I think the fundamental difference in this issue is that Fred is a career radio guy while Minihane is a writer who happens to have a gig on radio.  Minihane doesn't have that "it could be me tomorrow" concern because to him, tomorrow he can go back to writing like he did before he joined D&C.  He's an outsider on the inside, and has no desire to assimilate to being on the inside.  If I were to guess, it's 80% playing a character and 20% his own true asshole shining through.

Has Minihane ever had a real career as a successful writer? I ask because I don't know. I know he wrote for WEEI.com but other than that I can't find any reference to him.

He has no wikipedia page and if you search Kirk Minihane Writer all you see is stuff like "Why Kirk Minihane is an asshole" "Asshole Kirk Minihane says Erin Andrews is a Bitch" and some archives of his WEEI stuff.

where I was last at
I listen to Sports Hub off/on on-line via streaming and Beetle strikes me as the adult in the room. He seem more knowledgeable and rational than F&M, and less prone to hysteria. So he may have to ratchet up the drama, hyperbole and BS for ratings sake.

I thought it was telling that, this morning at the same time Rich was thanking Pagano for reaching out to him when his wife had freakin' cancer, Kirk was thanking Merloni for his support in the wake of calling Erin Andrews a gutless bitch.

Interesting move, but kind of odd. I like Beetle and thought it was weird that he got passed over the first time. He was the perfect foil for Felger and was able to call out the BS in ways Mazz didn't. I thought he earned the shot at the night time gig, even though I wasn't sure he was suited for it. Calls for a quirky host like a DA, Jones or a Mike Adams.

However, like NEPJ, I thought he was a bit "off" the last year and a half. He stopped pushing back on Felger and his input dwindled from its peak a couple of years ago. I think 10-2 > 6:-- on. What's changed in the last two years that Beetle is now "ready?" Maybe an outside offer? Something else?

As far as who fills in the role, I think it's Keefe. Better with facts & stats than Wallach and the chemistry seems to be good when he's filling it. I think would be a step up from the Jones show. Hook is too stiff for F&M and I'm not sure how he'd do in one of the big chairs during the summer or vacation time.
