Pffft you're probably right. The nativity here sometimes is off the charts. I've known this forever yet still get baited in.

Could it just be that the commissioner's job in the past was to act as an agent for the owners and focus on hitting up politicians for favorable decisions and new ballparks?

This isn't his forte. And he made a giant blunder in trying to cover his ass (and the league's collective ass) by constructing a weak excuse for not acting more harshly on Rice. He never anticipated that second video appearing on television, and it's entirely possible he didn't see it because he knew what was on it anyway.

But as for today, I don't think it moved the chains. What is happening is that the NFL seems willing to take a leadership role in changing the culture. Last year, someone could make the statement "I don't care what he did, as long as he's the best player for the position." Today, not so much.

We have an entire culture built on the concept that athletes don't have to be good citizens, or even mildly decent students. It will take time to evolve, and I welcome what Goodell said today. And I agree with him that action, not words, will convince the sponsors that this change is real.

Even if this is just about money, and that's entirely possible, I still view today's rather clumsy presser as a positive.

You posted this much more eloquently than I was capable of from my car. I apologize for my earlier rant it's just frustrating to me that people actually expect something other than what I felt was obvious.

I strongly believe the commissioners job today still is all about being an agent to the owners whose primary job is to generate revenue and operating profit at an obscene level. I mean he's all but stated this in announcing league revenue goals moving forward.

Do I feel Goodell consults daily with 32 owners on a daily basis? Of course not.....I absolutely feel he consults daily with Mara and Rooney to get a pulse of the 32 as a whole. Don't even get me started on Mueller being an "independent" investigator who is firmly entrenced in that circle of trust.

It's all well and good for the NFL to announce that it wants to take a leadership role in changing the culture. But do we have any reason to believe that an organization that didn't think to talk to an actual woman about this incident is well situated, much less qualified to take on that role?

There's a subtle but enormous amount of hubris on the part of some of these guys conveyed when they think they can just hire an expert and become some kind of force of good on the issue when they have already demonstrated an epic lack of understanding of it.

I imagine the number of times Lisa Friel stifles the urge to facepalm over the next four months will be in the thousands.

It cannot be denied that the NFL is leading and Florida State is following--"new information" has surfaced causing Jameis Winston's benching to be extended to the whole game. I suppose one could hope that FSU is engaging in parody here for instructional purposes.

Winston is young and dumb and then dumber. It's all over Twitter that he stood on a table prior to shoutinf his "FTP" to the laughter of classmates......yet when in front of school administrators he claimed to have simply said it loudly without meaning for all to hear. Ok he's REALLY dumb!

Bedard on Felger & Mazz today teased that he has a forthcoming MMQB piece calling for "no credibility" Goodell to be replaced with a more independent NFL commissioner.
