The Pats will be lucky to control this. Bennett’s base salary is 900k, which means his hit for someone to sign this year is just 450k. He will probably get claimed. WEEI and others are saying the team that claims Bennett will owe him $4 million in dead money next season, but I think that’s wrong. All his guaranteed money was a signing bonus and the Packers should be taking it.
From what I’ve read, if a team claims him, to get out of the contract next year they take the 4 million hit in dead cap money.

Not specifically to Hillel, but given the (apparent) specifics related to cut for failing to disclose a condition, would the contract be voided, rendering him a free agent not subject to being claimed?

Is that specific to his contract? A way to protect against being traded or something? Or is it because he was cut for failing to disclose an injury? Generally, it would fall on the trading team.

Per Mike Reiss in his ESPN column

“5. Any team claiming Bennett would be inheriting his contract, which extends through 2019 and calls for a $2 million bonus to be paid early in the 2018 league year. That is manageable both in the short- and long-term. They could also decide not to pay the bonus and not have any obligations on their salary cap for 2018 and 2019. The bottom line: Bennett's contract shouldn't be a road block to a team claiming him. If anything, it would be viewed as a bargain.”

He could discourage other teams from claiming him if he really wanted to come back. Not sure that would stop a simple blocking maneuver but a team that did so would probably suffer in the player perception department going forward.

What’s the time frame for this? 24 hours?

Would really like Otto’s view on this.

This is true even if he were to retire?

The Packers waiving of Martellus Bennett may have an impact on the Patriots 2018 compensatory picks. Adamjt13, the original comp pick guru and Nick Korte, the current comp pick guru, have both opined that players released before the completion of Week 10 have not counted in the compensatory pick calculations. If this holds true for Bennett in 2018 and he's not being claimed on waivers, it would mean that the Patriots would not get a fifth-round compensatory pick for losing Bennett during the offseason. The Packers would still get four comp picks but they would improve their haul from a third-round pick, two fifth-round selections and a sixth, to a third and three fifth-rounders.

Emphasis mine.

With the caveat that toast might be better than Allen (although I don't know if his 'grades' exceed his pass catching), isn't Bennett toast. It appeared that he was playing through multiple injuries last year, and by the end, he seemed to have trouble getting up after every play. Maybe it was some combination of painkillers and chasing a ring and a payday that got him through it, but I don't think too many players over 30 can put together 2 straight seasons of that.

That's, like, the bullseye case for an NFLPA grievance, right?

Oh, if you're hurt and get surgery we have to pay you the rest of the season? Uhh... you can't quit the season, you're fired!
They have to pay him the full season at this point, and he is in the last year of his contract. Waiver claim very unlikely if he is hurt.

My favorite part of this incident is the obvious injury-report shenanigans.
Davis suffered a groin injury in preseason and returned to action October first, and he’s been receiving treatment on it, but the Colts have steadfastly refused to list him on the injury report.
I mean, I don't even have to make the jokes at this point, everyone knows them. Brady's shoulder is probably aching over them.

If true, would make them repeat offenders (and even for the same rule).

You wouldn't say that if you saw the injury. Even Redzone switched away tout-de-suite. I wouldn't say it was gruesome, but it's not anything you want to see out there.

Apparently Panthers TE Greg Olsen will be working as part of the TV broadcast for this weekend's Rams-Vikings game. Olsen is currently on IR, but the Panthers have a bye this week. It appears as if Olsen will be back for their next game.

This seems really weird. I guess Fox asked him to do this like five months ago. Seems like an odd thing for a current player to do.

The Vikings GM isn't happy with this, since they are in competition with the Panthers for a top seed in the NFC, and they play each other December 10 - he is worried Olsen will gain an advantage by being in production meetings. Not sure how much he would gain, but I can certainly see the point. (As an aside, they could also face the Rams in the playoffs, so there is an impact to both teams playing).

I hate doing this, because this is admittedly an overplayed card, but imagine if a Patriot player went to announce a Pittsburgh or KC game during a bye week? There'd be national outrage.

I forget specifically what game he did, but Matt Hasselback did a game a few seasons ago during his bye week when he was with Indy. A few weeks after that he started a game and everyone got really confused because they thought he retired and could have swore he was doing commentary on CBS.

BB would never let it happen is more like it.
Edelman: hey coach, can I go announce a game during our bye week?
BB: (death stare)
Reminds me of what he told Tebow about taking a (reportedly million-dollar) endorsement deal and related photo shoot during training camp. Tebow took his advice, declined the opportunity, and was cut a few weeks later anyway. He says all the right things publicly, but probably regrets listening to BB there.

The #Falcons waived talented but oft-disciplined CB Jalen Collins. An interesting name on the wire tomorrow.
He's on strike #2 for substance abuse policy. One more and he's done. Not sure if BB takes that risk on.

...but if he does, Collins is no longer on his rookie contract deal and can be signed for any amount, correct?

P.S. According to @patscap:

@patscap
My new Patriots salary cap space number after accounting for Marsh qualifying for termination pay is $3,542,920.

deep inside Guido territory
Eli Manning: “Coach McAdoo told me I could continue to start while Geno and Davis are given an opportunity to play. My feeling is that if you are going to play the other guys, play them. Starting just to keep the streak going and knowing you won't finish the game and have a chance to win it is pointless to me, and it tarnishes the streak. Like I always have, I will be ready to play if and when I am needed. I will help Geno and Davis prepare to play as well as they possibly can."‬
