Im not morally opposed for rooting for him. Id root for him if he was on the Patriots. Doesnt make him less of a scumbag.

Basically every moderately good QB is going to be the highest paid player in history each time one of their contracts gets extended, unless they do a team-friendly thing. Cousins will probably beat this next offseason and in 5 years this won't seem at all crazy.

That is exactly right. The cap is going up. More meaningful comparisons are against the cap and cap projections.

Lions would have been crazy to part ways with Stafford or play franchise tender roulette with him.

Why would they cut him? Has he been trending down over the last few years, issues with chemistry, both?

Missed 14 games in the last two years, was due more than 11 million dollars, on-field performance has declined for numerous reasons (injury, age, scheme, etc.), significant "cap savings" by putting most of the 10 million in dead money into the 2017 year (7M) and freeing up more money for FA next season, and the emergence of Jamar Taylor and Brian Boddy-Calhoun, plus the good showing by Jason McCourty this preseason. A Browns blog notes they've been shopping Haden in the trade market for more than a year.

The tried to trade him. No success. The problem is the contract.

By the time they are really good, he won't be. They are moving on.

Yeah, I'd love to get greedy and take a shot but someone else will be able to offer a starting job.

PFT reporting he signed sight unseen -- was scheduled to visit Pitts, but everyone started reaching out and Steelers sealed the deal.

Sure if does, if Haden is healthy. And although we don't know the amount guaranteed, it's generally accepted that the secondary has been for some time the Steelers greatest weakness. If they are going to overpay, that's probably the spot.

I'm not pleased by the acquisition. We lose Jules, they add Haden ... things change.

He's a warm body that can presumably put on a uniform. Dude hasn't been good for years.

For comparison, PFF rates his in the poor category while rating Gilmore and Butler in the average and high quality (just below elite) categories respectively.
Grain of salt and all that...

Can confirm that Vontaze Burfict’s suspension has been reduced to three games on appeal. #Bengals

Can't wait to see this rule (that he didn't even break) endorsed to the fullest this year!
Well it won't be. When it is invoked against a Giant, Steeler or Raven, ping me.

They are trying to drive him from the League, for legal/PR reasons that have only become more pressing.

But he has given them plenty of ammunition. And if I recall correctly, he also contributed mightily to a playoff loss.

He needs to grow up and control his emotions. He turns 27 next month. There is plenty of career left for him if he takes this seriously.

It means two shits if they don't change scheme against us. They could have four prime Revis clones and if they continue to play zone, Brady will pick them apart.

That seems like an overpay to me, but what do I know. Probably depends on how much is guaranteed.
Looks like just the $7M for this season is guaranteed. He is probably cut at the end of the season regardless of how he plays by mutual agreement - hitting FA after a solid season could net him a big payday, and the Steelers would want to lower his cap number unless he's the old Joe Haden.

They are trying to drive him from the League, for legal/PR reasons that have only become more pressing.
Yup. And if, when he returns, Burfict delivers another ugly-looking, borderline-legal hit, they'll double the suspension and maybe even lean on Mike Brown to release him. Burfict would have been a big star in the JACKED UP! Era but for a league attempting to appear like they're "doing something" about the concussion problem, a guy like Burfict who (rightfully) has a reputation as a head-hunter is a liability.

This rule is about looking concerned, and like the league has "taken action." When it does get applied, expect the TV partners to praise it to the rafters. Player safety is a priority - see?

As for this being applied to Burfict despite it being debatable had it been any other player - tough. Burfict is a cheap shot artist and always has been. Shiiiiiiiiiit, Burfict almost wrecked Gio Bernard's (his own teammate!) knee again (had ACL surgery in the offseason) with a low tackle in a non-contact practice earlier this month. That the Bengals continue to employ this bonehead after he helped lose them a playoff game is why they're the Bungals.

True enough, but maybe they will.

I get that his last two years have been lost seasons, largely because of injury. If he can't stay healthy, the acquisition won't matter.

But he's only 28, a year older that Butler, a year and a half older than Gilmore. It's an understandable move by Pitts, with potentially big upside.

No, I wholeheartedly agree it's a good pickup, i just think against the Pats it doesn't mean all that much unless they switch to a different scheme. I'm not sure if he makes them able to do that or not, at whatever state he's in, but end of day I don't think it means much for the Patriots. Other opponents, maybe, so playoff seeding might be affected.

To be fair, they wouldn't have been in a position to lose that game (or win it) if Burfict hadn't drilled Roethlisberger and crushed his shoulder. Cincinnati was losing 15-0, then Burfict knocked Ben out of the game and the Bengals scored 16 unanswered. He also forced a fumble earlier in the contest. He is a classic "giveth and taketh away" player; his physical edge makes him really good, but he plays right on the edge and too often he goes too far.

They continue to employ him because he's under contract as one of the top 1-3 off-ball linebackers in the league when he's out there. No team is just going to give up on that without any compensation, nor should they.
This is a bit much for me. I know PFF loved him last year, but B/R (NFL1000) ranked him 10th among 4-3 OLB (so not even all off-ball LB), he didn't make MMQB's top 10. I haven't done a deep dive or a thorough comparison on him or anything, but the national consensus seems to have him as a good-to-very-good LB but not an elite-level 'backer.

I'm actually not totally worried about this move - moves the needle some, but not enough, imo - but: it's been a pretty big story this off-season that Pittsburgh IS changing to a more man-based scheme because of the Patriots ability to dominate them when they're playing that same old zone scheme.

I sincerely appreciate the work the NFL1000 guys do (a lot more than PFF actually), but it's very hard to take something that ranks Burfict only three spots ahead of his backup Vinny Rey. I also think he's hurt in these lists by a lack of durability, which is why I included the caveat of when on the field. Between a concussion in 2014, knee surgery that cost him most of the second half of 2014 plus the first half of 2015 and the suspension last year, he's missed 22 games the last three years.

True enough, plus as discussed in the The Nation's Tears: Vol. II thread, Stafford has a chance to threaten the all-time marks for 4th-quarter comebacks and game-winning drives in a career.

TJ Ward will be cut if Denver can't trade him

Good, fuck that guy, also has to weaken that defense which was already trending worse
