How about a case of the Hellenic flu for Drew, requiring a couple of weeks in Pawtucket to get some more ABs?

If Bogaerts is still sick, they'll need a short-term backup. They're probably sending RDLR down, and they'll bring up Webster or Ranaudo for the next spot start in place of Buchholz.

Another possible option is that they are DFA'ing Herrera, but I would hate for Cecchini to sit on the bench.

Why would they do that? Herrera has experience all over the field. Cecchini is limited.

Or, his going up to Boston could be completely unrelated to bein promoted. Maybe Cecchini has an injury they want checked out by the medical staff and he's in town for that.

There's any number of possibilities here

I know it's premature, but I'd rather see Mookie than Garin.

Dude continues to be on fire, even after the call up to Pawtucket:

– Feats of Mookie: Being exceptional. Through eight innings, the PawSox had two hits against Twins prospect Trevor May. Both were from Mookie Betts, who had a double and triple before adding a ninth-inning walk against the right-hander and ultimately scoring his team’s only run. With the 2-for-3 performance, Betts (who played second base on Monday) has a .292/.404/.479 line and has reached base in all 13 games he’s played in Triple-A.

It's more than premature -- it's insane. He'd have to be added to the 40-man roster.

You can't add a player in his place
I mentioned this in the other thread, but I don't see how they can avoid optioning De La Rosa for a roster spot for a starter to make Workman's next start and then optioning whoever makes that start to activate Doubront to make De La Rosa's next start. And that leaves them with an extra spot for whatever if they go ahead and option De La Rosa now.

I know, I know. But he's been ripped from me here in Portland and I want to keep watching the kid play. He's awesome.

I mean, DFA Sizemore already. That'll open a spot.

I'm not following. You suggest:

Workman suspended, 24 eligible of 25 man roster

De La Rosa optioned for Workman replacement starter. (24 eligible for 25 man roster)

Doubrant activated, Workman replacement starter sent back (24 eligible for 25 man roster)

Workman suspension ends (25 players eligible)

Where's the "extra" spot?

Maybe they're comfortable enough with Holt in the OF that they think they can DFA Sizemore. He's kind of redundant with Nava back anyways.

Doubront would start on Friday, which is Workman's next slot. Felix worked on Sunday (as did Brandon) so he'll be going on 4 days rest.

I got a notice that posts were hitting this new thread and my first reaction was WTF!  I'm hoping this is not a promotion, and more likely some business that had to be done in Boston.  Mark, he is already on the 40 man roster.

But why DFA Sizemore right now to have Cecchini ride the bench?  Assuming everyone is healthy you won't be playing him over X or Drew.  Sizemore might even be a better pinch runner than Cecchini at this point.  Plus while Sizemore has little value, he is a warm body in the OF and a hedge against injury.

Brian MacPherson ‏@brianmacp 2m

Farrell: "We've got some things to adjust to. We're still waiting on Brandon Workman's pending suspension... We've got a few moving parts."

Brian MacPherson ‏@brianmacp 1m
Farrell: "It's not surprising that some reports are out there because we've got so many things up in the air right now."

Brian MacPherson ‏@brianmacp 1m
(At no point did Farrell say, "No, that's not true," however.)

It's De La Rosa's spot until they need the replacement starter to make Workman's next start.

I was referring to Mookie Betts, not Cecchini.

And if Garin is being added to the roster, it's out of necessity and not a merit-based "promotion". I really hate when that word gets routinely used by reporters in referring to these sorts of transactions.

My bad on the 40 man spot, I need to read what you're replying to more carefully.  I agree on the second sentence completely.  Label it what it is and stop insulting our intelligence.

So to me it looks like Cecchini is here as depth with Rubby being sent down, until Thursday when Cecchini is then sent down for Doubront, who will make the start in place of Workman, while he serves his suspension.

Friday (I goofed upthread). Lester tonight, Lackey tomorrow, Peavy Thursday. Then they'll have to figure out what to do for Saturday (Webster or Ranaudo) since Clay's making another AAA start on Thursday night.

Even though Webster is on schedule to start Saturday, it looks like it would make more sense to borrow Ranaudo Friday and wait until Saturday to activate Doubront since there's no borrowing that roster spot again once he's activated. Unless there's a DL or DFA move coming that we don't know about yet, anyway.

Victorino is reportedly slated to return to the team sometime on the West Coast. The DFA could be Sizemore at some point in the next couple of days.

True, but in the meantime he was an insurance policy until Victorino is back.  Now the OF consists of Bradley, Holt, Gomes and Nava.

All of whom I would rather see playing the outfield over Sizemore.

You have to wonder whether Sizemore will even show up to get his ring next April.  I bet he'll just have them mail it to him.

So how does the OF shake out when Victorino is back? You can't sit Holt, so does it essentially come down to Bradleys defense vrs Nava's offense?

Nava/Holt/Vic or Holt/Bradley/Vic vrs RHP (with Gomes taking Nava's place in LF vrs LHP)
