California. Duh.
I wouldn't have complained much honestly if he had been given a straight red, but the idea that "there is no possible way" it could be yellow is nonsense.
In the modern game, a foot over the ball straight into an opponent's leg is almost always red. I'm used to hard tackles in the derby, so I didn't get too crazy when it happened, but it really should have been red. Especially considering he'd gotten away with a challenge worthy of a yellow earlier.

I can try to convince myself that Schneiderlin's injury was a deal breaker, but Everton hasn't won at Anfield since Tom Davies was born so I'm not too surprised. Lock up 7th, spend the Lukaku money wisely, and regroup for next season.

It was but let's be honest, they didn't show up today, which is beyond disappointing.

Crazy first 10 minutes in the Palace-Chelsea game. Costa scores early, then Palace get 2 from Zaha and Benteke within a couple minutes to take the lead.

Fuckin hell, ten minutes of injury time before the ref blows the whistle and Palace scrape the win versus the champions elect.

Seven points is still a big lead. But Spurs are at Swansea next while Chelsea host Man City. A Spurs win/Chelsea loss on Wednesday and things would start to get very interesting.

I can't really pretend I care much about the League Cup, but Monaco and PSG are playing a hell of a game.

This City XI is beautifully ridiculous. Looks like a back 3, but only Pep would have the balls to play two out-and-out wingers as wingbacks with only one defensive midfielder. Never change, Pep.

Arsenal have not done very well the past few years against high-pressing teams. But if they can beat the press and get the ball to Ozil and Sanchez in space, they will get good chances. I think Xhaka is the key player in this game. His ability to play accurate long passes will be crucial, assuming he doesn't pick up a dumb red card in the first half hour.

The only thing I know is it's not ending 0-0.

Hmm actually it's a back 4 with Navas at RB? Equally absurd.

Ospina is not a good goalie. His aggression on Sane, who was being pushed wide, took out Bellerin. So he takes himself out of goal, misses the attacker, and also impedes his defender. Nice work.

Poor, poor Arsenal.

City already 1-0 up, while Navas has made two tackles, both have been fouls, and now he's booked.

Alexis needs to attack Navas as much as he can.

What a fun game for a neutral. As a United supporter this is a welcome change to yesterday's snoozer

Now Navas almost gives away a penalty, only saved by the offsides flag.
For the two hundredth time - you don't need the 's' in 'offsides' - it's 'offside' there are only two sides, onside and offside, there are no offsides as in somewhere there are a gaggle of offsides having a party.

I understand this is an US thing, cos I've seen it on some US streams I've watched, and it's no different to back in the day when some patriotic real US of Americans said, lets spell some words differently to show them limeys we're not like them...I understand that - that's cool.

But offsides makes no sense and if even one of youse stopped saying it, and a fuckin power of youse say it, just think how much smarter the USA would get as a nation. The world quotient of stupid is on the rise...it's everywhere. If we don't know when to apply a plural...what the fuck do we know?

If two players are in an offside position, can I say "offsides"?

Toure for Sterling has slowed the game down. City have less pace and fewer numbers on the edges but an extra body in midfield. That's given them more control in the center.

Please don't. I know it is one of the things that make 'America' great, that you do things your own way...but I think the way to go would be to say, both men were 'offside' - but i do respect the need, the urge, the unflinching desire for US of Americans to be different, even if wrong.

For my part i am trying really hard not to say America when i mean USA out of respect to Canadians, Mexicans, Bolivians, and all Americans of both North and South Continents. It ain't easy. And it is with this knowledge that my ire is dimmed. And of course Celtic winning the league 0-5 at Gorgie v the jam tarts.

This is how I feel about the "ground rule double". Bravo.

So Bundesliga action just started:
Hoffenheim(3rd) vs Bayern(1st) is the top match.
Köln(6th) vs Frankfurt(7th) is the fight for Euro League.
Bremen(12) vs Schalke(9th) are fighting to secure a place in midfield out of the drop zone.
Dortmund(4th) vs Hamburg(12th) is on paper the easiest call with BVBs home strength, so HSV should stay in trouble.

Hoffenheim vs. Bayern is interesting, Bayern has a killer week ahead: @Hoffenheim, Dortmund(H), Real(H). Neuer missing is the biggest problem. They could win each match and still have problems if they beat Real say 2-1. And they could draw each match also...Tough week and Ancelotti is already in rotation mode: Ulreich(Neuer injured) - Rafinha, Javi Martinez, Hummels, Alaba - Alonso, Renato Sanches(!!) - Robben, Vidal, Coman - Lewandowski.
Sanches with his first Bundesliga start since 1st of october!

Even if Red Bulls wins their next match, Bayern is still 10 points up with 7 matches to play. Punting a few matches (some of which they'll still probably win, such is their depth) is absolutely the right play so long as they're still in the UCL.

Agreed - bigger result is that Hoffenheim stay ahead of BVB for the 3rd guaranteed CL spot. 4th goes to the playoff round.

In any event, it'll be weird to not see Leverkusen and Schalke in European competition
