Sinister Funkhouse #17
Mookie Betts was originally scheduled. Coyle replaced him.

Christian Vasquez was an injury replacement on the world team... obviously he will not be there.

Absolutely crushed it. Looks to have gone further than the one that broke the windshield during BP.
I wish milb players could be in the Home Run derby,

MYRTLE BEACH!!!!
Gallo was at the local minor league affiliate to start the season. I kept saying I got to get up there before he's gone and I was too late. Had a busy spring but if I had known what he was, I would have dropped in to see bp.

Gallo's projections on Fangraphs are funny. Oliver has him with 35 HR and 91 RBI ... but also with a .193 BA / .270 OBP, because they have him striking out 45.5% of the time.

I'm looking to see if they rebroadcast it. I wanted to see Julio Urias pitch. 17 year old in AAA for the Dodgers. He's already thrown his inning.

Did anyone see it?

His stats this year show some marked improvement in the K, BB, and OBP rates, which is what they are looking for. Phenomenal numbers in A+ ball. His AA OBP is .371 with a homer every 10 at bats.

I thought Owens showed Major League stuff.  For such a lanky guy, his windup is free, easy, and fluid.  He really seems to have control of his body up there. I thought he showed good arm action and deception too. He had good control of the fastball, hitting the corners a couple of times.  The curve is a little loopy, but nothing great.  But his change up is awesome.  Throws it high 70s to low 80s.  Flashed it at his put-away pitch against Vargas.

With the speed of the fastball and so-so nature of the curve, he will live and die by location and advanced scouting on setting up batters per their tendencies. I was a little down on him based on the scouting reports, but tonight saw a for sure MLB pitcher - likely a #3-4 guy with #2 upside if he can add 2-3MPH on his fastball and continue to refine his location.

Didn't see it, but Twitter was impressed. Apparently blew someone away with a 97mph heater. As a 17YO.

Yeah, I agree Scuba, Owens will have to hit his spots and that seems to be the big if in his game.  I'm real happy with his improved control over the last month - hopefully he can sustain and build on it

His look and mannerisms on the mound remind me a lot of Bill Lee

I've read about the kid, and its fascinating to me because the majority of the kids I've coached as they've progressed through high school are this high school grad class. So this kid is 5 months younger than my son, 5 months younger than the best player I've ever coached, Grant Holmes (who is in the Dodgers system in Rookie ball), and yet somehow the kid is 5'11" throwing 97 in AAA. I need to see it because the stuff is obviously plus plus, but to be getting outs in AAA as a 17 year old is just maturity beyond his years.

I'm sure it will be replayed over the next few days, but I've checked and it isn't being replayed overnight. I'm sure we'll all see him soon enough.

With all the hype Bryce Harper got as a 16/17 year old kid who graduated early and went to Juco to get to the draft faster, this kid is getting very little media attention.
