Could you provide a source of this information, please? Reports I've read recently don't speculate about what happened at the scene of the crime, other than Taylor coming at the perps with a machete in hand, which is based on the girlfriend's story. Your post paints a very different picture, and I would need to see further proof before accepting your conclusion. If the house was presumed empty, the locked bedroom door would be just that, a locked door, which in the perps' eyes, might be hiding loot. No need to assume people were inside.

Edit: Grammar & clarity
I still think that if a bedroom door is locked that you would presume that someone was inside. Generally people don't lock their bedroom doors when they're not in the bedroom. Most bedroom doors also don't have a key lock so they can only be unlocked from inside.

CNN.com

Police said Garcia and Taylor were awakened by noise in the living room, and that Taylor got up and locked the bedroom door, but the door was kicked in and two shots were fired, one striking him in the leg.

I remain skeptical. Clearly, there is lot of conflicting information in the media about what and how it went down.

I have locks on the bedroom doors in my home, and while I don't lock them often, I can certainly envision a scenario where I would. The CNN report you cite indicates that during the earlier break-in, the safe in Taylor's bedroom was searched. If that were me, I think I'd be locking the door as an added safety measure, especially if I knew someone had recently broken in to my house. I don't mean to imply that that's what really happened, of course. I'm just using this scenario to cast doubt on your presumption that a locked bedroom door means someone's inside.
