Phillies sign Will Middlebrooks and Heiker Meneses and Pedro Beato to minor league deals
A-Gon joins the Mets
Allen Craig signs a minor league deal with the Padres
Nava heading to Pittsburgh on a minors deal/ST invite. Hope he continues to produce; I'll root for him as long as he's playing.
Ryan Kalish has signed with the Atlantic League's New Britain Bees.
Wow. Still just 29, and batted over .300 in limited action in AAA last year. There wasn't a minor league deal out there somewhere?
Never mind that was 2016 not last year.
Pedro Martinez has been inducted into the Canadian Baseball HoF. Yes, there is one.
Jonny Gomes has been hired by the Diamondbacks as an AZL rookie-level hitting coach.
They also hired Daniel Bard in a newly created player mentor position.
What was the reasoning for Martinez to the Canadian HoF? A former colleague was quite offended that I was familiar with that HoF. ( his grandfather was a member though).
I think its: Play for a baseball team in Canada
As a Canadian that followed the Expos closely growing up, it was Pedro that I fell in love with. A lot of Red Sox fans may claim Pedro is their guy, but he was the reason I became a Red Sox fan after he was traded. Well deserved induction into our HoF.
This is a happy memory of Ryan Kalish:
Interesting story on Jake Peavy...good guy just had some really tough breaks lately. Wants to make a comeback in baseball.
I met Peavy at a party at his place in San Fran while he was with the Giants. He was very friendly and courteous. If anyone deserves a break it is he.
$130 million in career earnings.
You'd be amazed at how fast that can disappear. Peavey is by no means broke by if I got ripped off for millions of dollars and my wife left me, I'd be bumming too.
I see it everyday on a much smaller financial scale. Bad finances ending in divorce.
I hope he ends up in a good place but that story was short on details. The guys got ripped off but also has a duck boat in the shed.
He says he has plenty of money (per Peavy...just bought a block of building in Alabama), just a lot less than he earned and deserves because of a scam artist.
Terry Francona's father, Tito, has passed away.
(Sorry, didn't realize that this was already mentioned in the Indians thread)
Chris Young to the LA Angels
I had a brain fart and for a second was thinking of Ryan Westmoreland and got very happy and excited that he was back into playing shape. Then I realized my mistake and felt dumb. But good for Kalish to still chasing it.
Lots of interesting updates in this MassLive piece:
Dice K is still pitching in Japan.
Buchholz is still unsigned. I'd like the Red Sox to offer him a minor league deal, in case we have a starter get hurt.
Koji is unsigned but wants to pitch. He struggled last season but still had a 105 ERA+ in 43 innings. I love Koji.
Napoli is still unsigned.
Salty is trying to play again and is in the free agent training camp.
Big Lack is still unsigned.
Felix Doubront signed in Korea.
Lars Anderson signed in Australia.
Good god, no thank you to Clay.
I wonder if the 2013 team still good enough in 2018 to win the 2018 WS?
I saw Shea Hillenbrand on an episode of House Hunters
OK, you made me look. I hope his wife's voice isn't as grating in real life. How can you live with that?
Panda at the plate- homers in Arizona spring training game:
Best shape of his life!
The camera adds ten pounds.
If you eat it, sure
Pics or it didn't happ ... oh
That sums it up quite nicely.
Indicative of Japan's lack of angst regarding pace of play?
Indicative of every GM's concern regarding quality of play?
Indicative of our shared fondness for the brilliance of his of 2013 work!
Indicative of the too many parties at Napoli's?
Sadly, "trying" may be the operative word here.
Personality and charm will only take you so far.
How many cameras are on him?
Appears to be about 10.
Is Beltre playing LF?
Eduardo A. Encina
#Phillies 3B Will Middlebrooks injured colliding with another player on fly ball in LF. Looks like he hurt left leg. Looks serious. Paramedic tripped and fell over him while Middlesbrooks was getting an aircast placed around his leg
Video of Middlebrooks’ injury here — nasty ankle caught under charging LF.
It's almost like Middlebrooks didn't see him coming...
Not a good prognosis for Middlebrooks.
I see what you did there. Middlebrooks didn't, but I did.
Middlebrooks fractured his left fibula. Ankle also injured but not known yet how badly.
Mike Napoli is back with the Indians… sorta.
It's a minor league deal, and they made it clear before he signed that barring an Encarnacion/Alonso injury, he won't make the team. This is Tito extending a mutual benefit agreement. Napoli will serve as mentor/coach in March while showcasing what he can still do at the plate for other teams that might be interested.
Worst case scenario for the Indians means I at least get some use out of my "Party at Napoli's" T-shirt again.
Daniel Nava, Pittsburgh Pirate, out 10-12 weeks due to back surgery.
This is how Jon Lester plans to throw to first base from now on (seriously):
This is still so odd to me. Did it start when he went to the Cubs, or did it somehow stay a secret the whole time he was on the Red Sox?
Brandon Moss DFA'd by the A's
I guess Butterfield has been working with him on this all spring, per something I read somewhere.
Fake edit: Here it is
I meant the whole throwing problem itself. I totally don't remember it being a thing when he was in Boston.
It wasn't a problem earlier in his career, but we were aware it had become one at least by his last season here.
