I've been listening today for updates on the Pats and FA. Wow, this is cringeworthy radio. It's kind of sad.

Listening to these guys for updates on the Pats is like listening to Tucker Carlson for updates on the Democratic presidential candidates.

I heard about 10 minutes yesterday while driving around in my car and I have to say that Felger was absolutely pathetic. He was ripping on Pats fans for not being more angry that the team didn't resign Patterson. And a few callers said that he wasn't worth the extra money and that he was a good player, but not one that you spend over what you think he's worth. Which I think is a pretty reasonable take.

Felger flips out. "Either you like the player or you don't! You all said how great he was in November and now you don't think that you should sign him? Everything that this team does is always so right and everyone else is dumb. Why wouldn't you sign the guy, he only makes 5% of your salary cap!"

There's a lot of things that you can take the Pats to task on, especially letting free agents leave -- though I think that the Pats have a little bit of leeway on this subject considering that most of the people they kicked the curb haven't done much -- but getting pissed off at the fan base for not resigning Patterson? I don't know. That seems dumb. Yes, there are a number of Patriot fan boys who believe 1000% that everything the team does is the right move. But I don't know, this isn't like when Wes Welker signed with the Broncos. Patterson was a good player who went to the Bears. It'll be fine.

And the other thing that sort of bugged me is the whole "he only makes x% of your salary cap". Right. That's true, but if he makes x% and another player makes x% and another and another and another, there's no flexibility and you have a bunch of mediocre players taking up a big chunk of your cap. The salaries of star players don't kill a team's cap, it's the salary of mediocre ones.

Some callers bust him by saying he's a "beaten man" and it shows in his recent takes, this week especially. He hates any player they bring in but then thinks it's a failure when, after a year of getting good production out of him, he walks for a good pay bump.
He also ignores the difference between releasing a player for cap purposes and not signing your FA because they're going to make a ton more than they have been. "If the pats are so great with the cap, then they failed here."

Yesterday, Felger lamenting them not signing Earl Thomas. "He would have been a fun player here." Then they had this exchange:
Mazz: "The Ravens have such a lineage of great safeties..."Ed Reed, Eric Weddle and now Earl Thomas. He's the perfect sideline to sideline guy for the that defense."
Felger: "Can he even go sideline to sideline anymore?"
Mazz: "I think that's the big question about him."

So, within a minute, Felger goes from lamenting the Patriots not signing him to questioning whether he can be effective and Mazz compares him to Ed Reed then also questions if he can be effective.

In the 20 minutes that I was listening, and that's a SSS I know, he was just flailing around. Then they start back in with the Garrapolo talk and I'm like, since the Pats traded him they've been to back-to-back Super Bowls, winning one of them. Felger was saying that they should have gotten more for him (debatable, Belichick doesn't provide his thinking for trades, so I don't know -- and neither does Felger) but Maz was pissed that they didn't keep him. "They should have signed him, Mike. Anything he wanted. He should still be in New England."

I'm not saying that trading Garrapolo was a slam dunk and it may still bite them in the ass in a season or two, but it's kind of hard to argue with the results right now. Why are you even bringing this up?

I get it. I really do. You can't spend four hours a day, five days a week telling the world how great the Pats are. That's really boring radio. But you can't just keep lying to your listeners either. It's really disingenuous. I don't know. Maybe you can. They are the number one show in the region, so what the fuck do I know.

Well was it 10 minutes or 20 minutes??? You Pats fans are unbelievable and have such a short memory you can't even remember how much time you spent listening to the show over the course of 40 minutes!!!! Give me a break.

Yeah Mike, these Pats Fans just want so say "Yeah Felgah, you suck and just hate playahs no mattah what. In Bill we trust"

You jamokes can't even be consistent over how much time you listened to the show and now we're supposed to believe that you liked Patterson in November and have no issue with him being let go even though you could have signed him for 1M more. Where were you in November???

It's this stuff that drives me nuts, there's no nuance, he even likes Boldin coming back and giving the Patriots more than Patterson did. I know he doesn't think the Patriots wanted to use Patterson the way they did but he was pretty much useless until they made him a utility player and used his size and speed as a RB which opened up a few things at WR when Edelman was 100%.

Earl Thomas signed a 4 year deal for $55 million with $32 million guaranteed. I think almost everyone agrees that outside of QB the Pats strongest unit is their secondary, where they already have one safety making $9 million, who happens to be 31 years old with a lot of mileage on him. With the other needs that the team has (like, say WR) Giving $32 million guaranteed dollars to a second 30 year old safety with a lot of mileage on him (coming off a bad injury) would have been a monumentally stupid thing for them to do. Christ this show is dumb.

I have to think that a producer or whomever is appropriate will encourage him to tone the attacking of listeners down a bit. Their constant berating of Pats fans and Green Teamers has to rub a good portion of the listeners the wrong way. Maybe the strategy is paying of for them. Maybe more people like to "hate listen" to them than those that don't. Seems unsustainable to me.

I really think Felger died a little bit inside when the Pats won this year. It took a lot of the wind out of his sails and he has become a sarcastic sad caricature of himself. What was really telling to me was how angry he was after the Kansas City game. The Monday after that game he was pissed and it was some of the worst radio I can remember after a iconic win. In hindsight, he probably realized his fate at that moment.

The funny thing about Patterson is he is an example that could be used for Felger’s argument that teams shouldn’t spend money or high draft picks on running backs.

Eh, I think it's a lot like Ordway 10 years ago. Nothing is going to change on the afternoon show until EEI hires a valid team that can counter his schtick and have sustained success or the Patriots and Red Sox start sucking consistently and people start tuning out.

I don't recall the Monday after the KC win being negative, if anything I thought they said the team and fans deserved to gloat for the next few days and cut people off when they wanted to complain but I could have that mistaken with another big win.

Felger admitted as much this week. The Patriots winning the SB this year took away all the criticisms he would have had, Brady and Gronk being bigger than the team, BB mishandling Guerrero, missing training camp mattered, etc... I think that's why we're listening to what we are now because winning ruined all of those points.

I love that they say Jimmy should still be on the team then say they mismanaged the cap. Yeah I don't see how they'd be signing Earl Thomas if Jimmy was here.

It does not help things that the four-letter has thrown in the towel after 19 years. Had he heard the bouquets this morning on Golic and Wingo about the Pats’ approach to FA and roster construction, Felger would be in the hospital with a grand mal seizure. In financial markets, this is called capitulation.

Up through the end of the season (and maybe into the playoffs, I can't remember) one of the teasers that they used to play going into commercial and coming out was Felger saying to a caller something like "They just don't have it this year, how is me saying that negative." He was "all-in" on this not being their year, and was dreaming about an off-season of dissecting all of the mistakes they made and cracks in the Pats armor. This all went up in smoke when they won.

I think the Patriots losing the Superbowl would have been the dream scenario for him. "I don't know how they could have won, maybe if Brady showed up for one practice that wasn't required, or if Bill had just let Guerrero do his thing or if Gronk hadn't spent the offseason flirting with the WWF."

He capitulated prior to that, but it was in the postseason. I don't recall the game, but they pulled a win out of their ass and Mazz said everything was going their way and there was no stopping them,

Mazz has consistently and constantly said that he cannot enjoy a Red Sox season until he knows "they're for real". Usually that realization occurs in the World Series and then he's on board. Which means that he spends 95% of a season bitching about the team.

Which is a terrific way to enjoy a season. And makes for a compelling debate partner.

"Sox starting pitching looks pretty good."
    "I don't think that they're for real."

"The Sox have a world-class lineup."
    "I don't think that they're for real."

"The bullpen has some questions, but so far they're doing pretty good."
    "I don't think that they're for real."

    Okay, Tony.

In theory, Ellington is the C. Patterson replacement, but I take your point.

Regarding their free agency takes, they're just completely broken. They have nothing left to coherently argue, because they refuse to contextualize any Patriots FA activity against cap and roster management. They are wannabe starf*ckers who mock Patriot fans who are also starf*ckers, not realizing that the majority of Pats fans are perfectly accepting of the Belichick/Caserio Art of the Deal.

Our local radio guy here, who during the season was like a Kellerman Jr, is pretty much on the same wagon as Felger. "I can't believe you Pats' fans aren't more up in arms about this team and their lack of moves! Last year was a fluke, people. It will not go that way next year" The only difference is I know him personally and he admits he just says stuff to get people to call in. The Super Bowl did indeed break him and he knows there isn't any real criticism he can dish out. So he just fakes it.

Yaahhhhh Felger, I toldya in 2014 they shoulda kept Garoppollo.

What's the saying, Trading horses for show ponies? The narrative for the next few days is going to be, they let Flowers go so they wouldn't have to pay him and the could accumulate more draft picks, they didn't want to pay the extra million for Tate and other and let them slip away, want to rebuild through the draft and what has Bill really done there lately.

    No thanks.
