Fantastic article on a fantastic guy. Peter is a national treasure!

His social media content, lampooned here in recent years, is still better than 99% of the sports "journalism" crap we have to navigate through.

Every day we get Peter Gammons communicating and involved with baseball is a gift to treasure!

I didn’t like these lines: “During Friday night’s series opener, Maris hit his 36th home run, and Mantle smashed his 37th. A magical Fenway evening.”

Really? Magical when the 61 MFYs are pounding the Sox into submission at home?

Does the truth hurt?

That team sucked ass and deserved to be pounded. They would have been better off spending the season at the Winter Haven Elks Lodge "training" than trying to play baseball.

To each their own, I know, but to read that article, and only pull this out? Yeesh, that's some real glass-half empty shit right there.

Thanks so much for posting the link...lots of emotion swirling around. Brings me back to my weekly attempts at intercepting the Sunday Globe and carefully removing the sports section before my father lumbered downstairs. Gammons is a national treasure.

I loved the Gammons Sunday Notes the entire time he posted and when I moved away was shocked not all newspapers handled sports as the Globe does. You Bostonian sports fanatics are very lucky. Gammon will always be my favorite baseball writer, and I'm grateful AZBlue posted this story so I could learn more about man. I wish there was a whole book, I'd be first in line to buy it.

Thanks AZ!
