Wave of mutilation: The latest injuries

Oblique strains are fairly common and nearly every pitcher will have one at some point in their careers. Unclear that there is any magic ball that says "this pitcher will not suffer an oblique injury this season", nor are such injuries necessarily correlated with others. Sometimes, there's literally nothing that can be done.

I was always hoping that Whitlock would settle into the setup/closer role because he was so good in '21 and part of '22. He's got great stuff, I just don't know that he's durable enough to go more than 4 innings at a time.
They never allowed him to pitch on back to back days in 2021. He can't be a closer with those restrictions.

I think this is a piece that is hard to understand, at least for me. Is it more strain to throw 80-100 pitches every 5 days, or 1 max effort inning 3-4 times/week?
Not sure where anyone would find the data, but it sure seems like there's a disproportionate number of starting pitchers getting Tommy John surgery vs. relievers.

I think many people would argue that in today's game it doesn't matter because every single pitch (from about 18 years old on) is thrown at 100% max effort

Wasn't there some sort of plan in regards to his usage? If he threw an inning, he'd have one day off. If he threw two, he'd have two days off etc.

I don't care about the closer label, but he was an overpowering multi-inning reliever for a while.

No doubt it feels that way. I just wonder if that's because the starters tend to be way more high profile. When Shane McClanahan gets it, everyone takes notice. Not so much with Garrett Acton, or even Liam Hendriks.

A pitcher with usage restrictions is only useful if the game situation happens to line up with their availability. It also causes more stress on the other members of the staff who have to cover for him when he's not available. Someone who has to pitch on a schedule is called a starter.

That's really not true, sometimes they are called a closer (the schedule being the game situation and not days off).

All pitchers are load managed.

So many injuries, so many injury updates.

O'Neill is hoping to be back playing by Tuesday, but is still feeling lightheaded:

O’Neill, sporting a black left eye, stitches above his eyebrow and another cut above his right eye, spoke Thursday for the first time since the collision.
“First couple of days after the collision were a little tough, but I’m feeling better now,” he said. “I know I’m progressing in the right direction. Doctors agree with it.”
“I’ve had a lot of dizziness, so I’m fighting through that a little bit. A lot of fogginess,” he added. “First couple of days, slow to think. It took me a little bit to recover from that. I’m feeling better now. I feel like I’m on the right path, sort of through the last stages of lightheadedness. And I’m just a little more fatigued than I’m used to. But I’m thinking better now. And I feel like I’m on the right track.”
O’Neill is traveling with the team to Pittsburgh to stay on top of his progression and is hopeful to return by Tuesday when he’s eligible but will have to see how he continues to respond to treatment. He hoped to be able to stand in on some bullpen sessions in the coming days to make sure the brain fog is gone and that he can track pitches with clarity.
Grissom shooting for May 2 debut, if no setbacks.
Alex Cora said Vaughn Grissom, who missed all of spring training, will remain with Worcester and play second base the next two days. Grissom is likely to need most of the 20 days he’s allotted on his rehab clock, which began April 12, meaning he should be able to return by May 2, if he has no setbacks.
Devers not sure when he will play:
Devers sat out on Thursday for the seventh time in 20 games. While he said his shoulder is feeling better, he’s now dealing with knee pain. Devers said he first felt it on a play at third base on Tuesday.
“I couldn’t put total weight on my leg and that always affects my swing,” he said.
While Devers hasn’t been placed on the IL, he’s not sure when he’ll be ready to play or if it’s something he’ll have to manage going forward.
Refsnyder is back, but he is not 100% yet, going to play through the injury:

Refsnyder said the toe is not healed fully, with a break typically taking about six weeks to mend, but that he can manage the pain. He appeared in four rehab games, including two games in right field, one at first base and one as designated hitter, going 4-for-12. If the Red Sox weren’t so banged up and in desperate need of players, Refsndyer likely would have seen more time in Worcester.
Pivetta:
Pivetta has been feeling good and may have avoided a more serious elbow injury. He began throwing at 120 feet on Thursday and was scheduled to do so again on Friday, with a bullpen set for Saturday. Following the bullpen, the Red Sox will determine if a simulated game or a rehab start is necessary before he returns, but if all goes well he could be back by the end of next week.
Romy still sore but swinging a bat.
Infielder Romy Gonzalez has been sidelined with a wrist sprain. An MRI came back clean, but he continues to manage pain while swinging a bat. Reliever Isaiah Campbell, dealing with a shoulder impingement, began strengthening work this week.

Cora is VERY concerned based on his reaction... argh
Whole projected starting infield from spring training is now out with injuries: Casas; Grissom, Story and Devers. We are not even done with April yet. I know every team has injuries but this is ridiculous

1B, 2B, SS, backup SS, 3B, RF, Giolito, Pivetta, and Whitlock. And I'm not sure how many relievers. That's a bingo!

Nick Pivetta (elbow) will throw a live batting practice Saturday. Garrett Whitlock (oblique strain) is still playing catch. The team will meet Friday to figure out what the next steps might be … Romy González (left wrist sprain) is not progressing as well as the Sox had hoped, and is still experiencing soreness … Vaughn Grissom (groin strain) is progressing well. The Red Sox won’t reinstate him for their upcoming series with the Cubs, but he is getting close. Similar to Whitlock, the organization will meet to discuss the upcoming plan for the second baseman.
Pivetta throwing a live BP tomorrow-- I wonder if that means if it goes well he will have a rehab start a few days after that?
Sounds like Whitlock is behind Pivetta in terms of coming back.

I honestly can’t even recall which joint is the issue at this point. Now that I think of it, Devers already had head, shoulder, knees and… must be due for toe?
Between this and the thread being renamed for the Pixies, I am switching over into just laughing at it all instead of continuing to cry.

Not that it helps per se but the D-Backs are yet another team that has lost so many key pieces so early that they are struggling to function.

If we change it to a Cure reference, will you go back to crying?

It's Friday, so I'd be in love with that.

Pivetta should be ahead of Whitlock. A sore elbow usually only takes a few weeks while anything on the side ends up being a month and a half or more. Cora has done a good job keeping the bullpen from getting overworked even with all the pitching staff injuries and lack of days off. They should be able to muddle through until Bello and Whitlock can get back.

Cora said yesterday in the pre-game that he expected Grissom to play in the series vs. the Giants.

He could come up and struggle and be an improvement over Valdez right now.
I’m guessing Valdez will get sent to AAA over Blizzard. There’s certain types of hitters who will struggle but need to get their reps in against ML starters to adjust and ones that need more AAA seasoning. Rafaela is the former and Valdez the latter. Blizzard I have no hope for long term
