1. Check the Atletico thread for a very funny Arsenal appeal on those lines from a few months back.

2. No. Everton finishing fourth and knocking off Arsenal and Manchester United - the year after losing long time manager and a player to them - is a GREAT story for the BPL. As someone who really doesn't have a favorite team and watches as many matches with as many clubs as possible, I was loving the Everton thrashing of Arsenal. It was awesome theater.

Lineup for Palace is a bit out there.
Howard, Coleman Stones Distin Baines, Barry Barkley, Deulofeu Mirallas McGeady, Lukaku.

Seems as though RM is testing Barkley in a holding role since Barry will miss the City match. Baines passed a fitness test.

Is it really necessary that the copa del rey and today's BPL games have to kick off within 35 or 40 minutes of each other?  Seems unnecessary.

McCarthy was kept out with a muscle injury but was still subbed on. Poor defending at times and lots of wayward balls. Team was selected wrong as well, three wingers in the attacking midfield places. Either way, maybe Jelavic can help Everton out once last time and help Hull pick some points off of Arsenal? All it takes is one loss from them and Everton are back in pole position, though that may not be too advantageous given today's events.

Well that sucked.

Has Palace really climbed the table to 11th? Good for them.

I've become a Palace fan this year after attending my first PL game back in October, and it's really gotten me into the league. I'm no expert on the sport, but even when losing, they usually looked like they deserved the kind of results they've been picking up lately. And the last four games have been all sorts of fun. It's been a remarkable turnaround under Pulis (who should win Manager of the Year if you ask me). Maybe next season I'll start a thread for them :)

First time both Liverpool and Everton have done the double over Man Utd... ever, according to BBC.

Not only that, United have been outscored a combined 7-0 in the four fixtures.

Even as a Liverpool fan, I can't root against this Everton side to take the Champions League spot.  I might feel differently had I ever lived on Merseyside, but Everton's such a well-managed, likable, community club, and they've been right at Liverpool's side over the Hillsborough Justice Campaign.  It'd be a just reward for Everton after doing things the right way for so long (not that they had a choice considering Kenwright is perpetually strapped for cash, but still--they've done it well).

That game was as gratifying as Arsenal from a pure enjoyment standpoint, clearly in 2nd gear after the first goal. United, unfortunately, were hapless. Coleman was good, Mirallas had his best game of the season (and is now up to 8 goals/9 assists-solid for a streaky player like him), McCarthy good, Baines great, Stones classy. Stones and Jagielka should be the first choice pairing next season. Only player not playing his best lately has been Barkley, who has maybe deteriorated slightly after playing his first full first team season.

The Palace game will look worse by the day, but hopefully Everton can figure out a way to slip out of Southampton with all three points and Roberto can figure out how to work around their lack of Barry in the middle of the park. From here Arsenal clearly have the edge, but it may not be all lost if Newcastle or Norwich can force them to drop points. Anything can happen but I'd put it at Arsenal having a 70% chance and Everton 30%. A good season nonetheless from Everton, this is about as good as fans could've hoped for. A lot of people are tipping this as Everton will never have a better chance (because of investment from other clubs), but Spurs have shown that spending crazy amounts of cash doesn't always equal top four finishes. I think Everton and Liverpool have the chance to be mainstays in the top four if they buy well this summer and upcoming winter. Congrats to Liverpool on their title, bit overdramatic with the Rodgers is the Messiah talk and all this Gerrard Captain Marvelous team huddle crap but I'm sure if it was Baines huddling the team up after a big win to go top at Goodison I'd be hailing him too. Hopefully not.

Rog Bennett, an Everton fan, had a tweet this morning describing this season as the team making it around the world in a rowboat, only to sink 100 yards from shore.

Fourth place is off but there are worse things in the world than being in the drivers seat for direct qualification to the group stage of the Europa League. This season has been frustrating but if that's considered the most frustrating it'll be I'm looking forward to next season. Martinez is the right man for the future, today just wasn't the day.

Sadly I'm in the camp that thinks the Europa is a kiss of death. If you don't have the money to get yourself a deep squad, you sabotage your League chances. Makhachkala on a Thursday night, you like your chances at Stamfod Bridge on Sunday?

The MIB twitter feeds have been required reading on Saturday and Sunday mornings this season since the holidays.

Based on Newcastle's, WBA's and Norwich's forms since the New Year, I'd say there are still tougher games for Arsenal to play.

It's still pretty grim.

Yeah, fairly disappointed by the outcome of this weeks games.  Then again, I can't say I expected Everton to do as well as they have this year based on the changes that took place at Goodison Park.  A new manager, completely different play style, and the incoming of new players are something I thought would translate to a "transition year".  Yet, it turned out to be anything other than that.  In the same breath, I can say being that close to making the Champions League is a bit of punch in the gut.  It seems like Everton are a car that you know is low on fuel, but hope to hit the gas pedal in the hopes that the speed will carry them past the finish line to a win.  Only to run out of momentum and come up short.

The chance for us to make the CL is still there, but as mgblue2 has stated "it is still pretty grim".

A 3-5-2 for Everton today. An interesting tactical decision. Europa League play confirmed with the other results of the day. Just draw today at a minimum please.....

Almost forgot the awful no call in the box right before City's first goal. 2 goal turn around right there.

Good season all in all. Really excited to see who RM will bring in, much like Arsenal we're left wondering what could have been with all the injuries.

I concur. I think RM was lucky to inherit a team with a strong spine (Jagielka-Distin-Howard), many pieces who fit his system, the key loanees and some shrewd buys. And he did about as well you could have hoped, given the injuries.

I liked watching this team all season long - even when they lost, they did so playing entertaining, interesting games. I hope the Europa budget allows them to make some more shrewd buys (Altidore from Sunderland could be had and could be a reasonable Lukaku impersonator) and for continued league success.

Yes, another season has come and gone without a trophy. Yet just about everything else you could've asked for, happened. Glass ceiling to fourth place? Gone. Fear of facing the top teams? Gone. Those two things (and small others) have been replaced by youth and endeavor. It was fitting that the move for the first goal took 17 passes and the second 16 passes, it was a great sign of the change Martinez has brought to the club. Also it was a nice sign to see McCarthy pick up a goal, he definitely deserved it this season based on his work in the midfield. Outside of Pienaar, no one really had a down year per se. Kone was hurt, Lukaku was inconsistent and divides opinion but if you buy him now for 20-25 million pounds he's only going to get better. Mirallas was productive, the defense was the third best in the league despite having to start the terror that is Antolin Alcaraz at times. Stones has been very good, as has Barkley. Coleman was rightfully the player of the season, and Baines performed as well as he could given the offense is being spread around more evenly. However, there are some spots to fill. The left side of midfield needs some freshening up. Might I suggest Dusan Tadic of Twente? Given that Roberto will have 30 million to spend, maybe grabbing him for under 10 mil (Twente are in financial trouble and need to sell) could still allow for buying Lukaku. If Chelsea don't want to sell or Rom doesn't want to move, there are a few options. Bony may be costly, I've never really liked Remy, and Michy Batshuayi is an unknown quantity. Either way, look for around 6 new players in the first team to combat Europa (including academy players).

He's lacking as a surefire finisher and would probably be at a premium due to being English but he is much like Lukaku. I'd have him at the right price.
