This should wake up the Italians. Just what the game needed
Not yet. They look sluggish -- maybe mentally. And while possession is a weird stat, Italy just can't get any of the ball at the moment. Seems likely they will have to press and risk getting caught.

California. Duh.
The no stutter step on the run-up rule is being called just as inconsistently as the keeper coming forward of the line used to be.

Italy should take their corners short. They are at a disadvantage in the air in tight spaces all game and they only are risking a counter.

There has to be continuous motion towards the ball.
I hear this all the time but is that really in LOOG? I have always understood that feints and attempts to deceive are permitted, though the ref will give defending team a bit of leeway on entering the box early if there is a feint.

Half of the attacking team was in the box on this one.

Short corners are the devil's work.

Germany just played this too safely. It's a difficult tactical situation because you can't lose the midfield to Italy's 5 and run the risk of them picking one of those through balls and opening you up. If Gundogan or some other more dynamic CM were available they probably could have hoped to make it work but the midfield 3 are/were so much more comfortable behind the ball that you were putting a ton of pressure on Kimmich, who was fantastic in his last match but more ordinary today.

The hard part is saying what alternative Low should have chosen. You saw yesterday with
Belgium how tough it can be to ask young players to step in at this stage of an International tournament, so maybe introducing Weigl who has a bit more passing range wouldn't have worked out. Schurrle and/or Draxler surely would have provided a little more creativity. Everything said about Weigl also applies to Sane.

I think with the stutter step and I was just digging around on the web right now. You can hesitate at run up. But once at the ball you can't stop your motion. On my iPhone or would dig deeper.

Apparently the strategy here should be to fall down and roll around. Every time Germany does it they get a yellow on Italy.

I thought both teams were in the box by a step. They usually don't call that since the result is usually harsher for the defending team.

Right, that's my understanding too. Once you plant or go past the ball you can't hesitate on the swing through the ball or go backwards. But a stutter is legal otherwise even if it's a full stop. That's my understanding at least.

He took his stutter on the run up.

Which one did you think wasn't a yellow? Pelle was all over Boateng's calf on that one that was certainly a yellow and Boateng's reaction was more than understandable

The two before that one.
The one where he gave a yellow for a high boot that didn't connect after not giving a foul for one that did. And two before where he gave a yellow on a clean tackle.
Also the yellow for dissent on a bad foul call was fun.

Yeah, I always thought you could slow down almost to a stop but could not stop completely even on run up. Jeez maybe they changed things from my days.

I'd do a front face plant if I tried a stutter. So, in my case, it's ill advised even if legal. :0)

I wish more refs would call that grabbing the ball on the way down yellow. Somehow that became a thing in the last few years and it annoys the hell out of me

I think I've seen more players grabbing the ball after falling over in this tournament than any other. You really should get booked since it's a deliberate hand ball.
